Monsoon enters Punjab, Haryana

The southwest monsoon further advanced into Punjab and Haryana today, bringing widespread rains in the two states and causing mercury to drop by a few notches. "The southwest monsoon has further advanced into entire Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, remaining parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on June 28," Director of the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, Surinder Paul said. He said widespread rainfall activity was observed over northwest India with heavy rainfall at isolated places. Paul said moderate to heavy rains also lashed most places in Haryana and Punjab, including Chandigarh, today. "More rainfall is likely over many parts of Punjab and Haryana during the next two-three days. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places during next two days," he said. Notably, last year, the monsoon's arrival in Punjab and Haryana had been delayed by over a week and it was only around July 12 that it had fully covered all parts of the two states. Five persons were killed when a 12-seater aircraft crashed in a crowded Mumbai suburb today, the second air mishap in Maharashtra in as many days. Theose killed include two pilots and two aircraft maintenance engineers on board and a pedestrian in the Ghatkopar area where the plane crashed, police said. The pilot and flight test engineer of a Sukhoi Su-30M aircraft of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited had ejected safely after it crashed near Nashik yesterday. The plane, which crashed in the Jagruti Nagar locality shortly after 1 pm today, once belonged to the Uttar Pradesh government and was sold to UY Aviation, an official said. The King Air C90 12-seater aircraft had taken off from the Juhu airstrip on a test flight, he said. IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Mumbai region

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Mumbai region today and tomorrow. "Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated placed in the districts of greater Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad today and tomorrow," IMD, Mumbai said in a warning issued today. An IMD official said the warning will remain applicable from 8.30 am today to 8.30 am tomorrow. "The heavy rainfall warning will be applicable for the same duration tomorrow as well," the official added. Heavy rains had lashed the city and Thane district over the last weekend and continued on Monday. The downpour had led to water-logging at several places and slowing the movement of suburban trains.

5 dead after chartered plane crashes in Mumbai

At least five people, including four on board, have died after a chartered plane crashed in a crowded neighbourhood in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area. The plane was about to land at the airport when it crashed near Jagruti building in Ghatkopar, where construction work was going on.According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), two pilots, two aircraft maintenance engineers and one other person lost their lives in the crash.Fire tenders and ambulances have been deployed at the spot after the incident was reported at around 1.35 pm.Reacting to reports of the plane belonging to Uttar Pradesh Governmnet, the state's Principal Secretary Information, Avnish Awasthi said, "The chartered plane which has crashed does not belong to Uttar Pradesh government. The state government had sold it to Mumbai's UY Aviation. The deal was done after the plane had met with an accident in Allahabad,".More details are awaited.

Soldiers deployed to help fight wildfire in England

A hundred soldiers and a military helicopter today joined firefighters battling a rare wildfire in northern England that could burn for weeks amid sustained hot weather, officials said. The troops doubled the number of responders tackling the blaze on Saddleworth Moor east of Manchester, which broke out Sunday and led to the temporary evacuation of dozens of homes. The fire, now covering seven square miles (18 sq kms) and being fuelled by peat, could spread if winds change direction, firefighters warned. "We can see this being prolonged for days, if not weeks," said Tony Hunter, an assistant fire chief, noting controlling the blaze was "dependent on a downpour of rain". He added: "If there is a change in wind to the opposite direction, it is a completely different picture then in terms of the fuel available to this fire." Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau to conduct probe into plane crash: DGCA

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will conduct a detailed probe into a chartered plane crash in Mumbai today, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) today said. "The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will conduct a detailed probe into the crash. A DGCA team is already on its way to the spot," Director General of Civil Aviation B S Bhullar told PTI. Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu also asked officials to rush to the spot to assist in the relief operations, an official in the ministry said. He said the minister also asked the investigation authorities to ascertain the cause of the crash. The small aircraft crashed in Sarvodya Nagar of Ghatkopar area in Mumbai at around 1.30 pm, police said. 5 magnitude earthquake jolts Nepal

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale today jolted Dhading district of Nepal, officials said. The tremors were also felt at Kathmandu, they added. However, there was no immediate report of any damage. According to the National Seismological Centre (NSC), the epicentre of the quake was at Dhading district, 80 km west of Kathmandu. The seismic event was recorded at 9:52 AM. The tremor was the aftershock of the April 25 Great Quake, NSC chief Lok Bijaya Adhikari said. Earlier on Tuesday, a mild tremor measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale was recorded in the same district.

Fire at oil refinery in southwest Iran kills 1, injures 18

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency says a fire in an oil refinery in the city of Abadan in southwestern Khuzestan province has killed one person and injured 18. The report says that the Abadan petrochemical complex caught fire yesterday and that 10 of the injured were transferred to hospital. The report didn't elaborate on what caused the fire. Fires and similar incidents occur occasionally in Iran's aging oil-related facilities that were hit hard by years of Western sanctions. A fire at an oil rig in southern Iran in October killed four workers. It happened just days after another fire at an oil refinery killed seven workers. In 2016, several fires at Iranian petrochemical plants and facilities raised suspicions about hacking potentially having played a role in starting them.

Market fire kills 15 in Kenya capital

A fire at Nairobi's Gikomba market killed 15 people today, a government official said, less than a year after a blaze to destroyed much of the Kenyan capital's largest open-air market. "We have lost 15 people from this tragedy this morning," said regional coordinator Kangethe Thuku. "We're yet to establish the cause of this fire," he said, which is believed to have started in a timber yard. The pre-dawn blaze left over 70 people injured and destroyed many of the market's wood and tarp stalls where second-hand clothes, shoes and vegetables are sold on the eastern side of the city. Three members of a family were killed and five others injured when their car fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by a heavy vehicle in Kotwali police station area here, police said. Six killed, 12 injured as SUV collides with bus

Six persons were killed and 12 others injured when a SUV collided with a bus in East Midnapore district, a senior police officer said today. The SUV collided with the bus on NH 116B near Marisha yesterday killing six persons including the driver, Superintendent of Police, V Solomon Nesakumar said. The 12 injured are admitted to hospital, the SP said. The SUV was on its way to Digha in East Midnapore district from Kandi in Murshidabad district, police said. Five of the deceased are Trinamool Congress workers of Murshidabad district, they added.
