Floor of chawl caves in

Four persons were rescued after the floor of a tenement in a chawl caved in, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said. The incident took place on the ground floor of Western India Chawl, Abhudaya Nagar, near Kalachowki around 7.40 PM. None of the four persons was injured. Police and local people rescued them using ropes, the official said.

Belgium's Medicover evinces interest in setting up charitable hospitals in Hry

A delegation of Medicover, a leading health organisation of Belgium, has evinced interest in establishing super specialty charitable hospitals at four places in Haryana, an official release said here today. A delegation led by Director, Medicover, Felipe Velasquez called on the Haryana Health Minister, Anil Vij, the release said. Felipe informed Vij that they have selected Haryana for establishing charitable hospitals in view of the unprecedented improvements made in the health sector during last few years. The organisation has about 3,000 super specialty hospitals in India and across entire Europe, the Haryana government release further said. Felipe said that under first phase, the organisation intends to establish such hospitals at Rohtak and Guugaon after which such hospitals would be established at Karnal and Ambala under second phase. Seven get fresh lease of life from brain-dead woman

As many as seven people got a new lease of life after the family of a 53-year-old brain dead woman donated her organs. Two heart valves, both corneas, kidneys and the liver were harvested from the woman for transplant with the liver being brought here by an air ambulance, a release from BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals said today. Nirmala Bhat was injured in a road accident on June 22 and was referred to Kasturba Medical College Hospital in Manipal. She was declared brain dead on June 25. Following this, her family -- husband, son and daughter -- decided to donate her organs. On June 26, a green corridor was arranged for the speedy transfer of the liver from Manipal to Mangaluru airport. Similarly, police had made arrangements for a green corridor from the airport here to the Global hospitals, the release said. The transport was completedin 45 minuteswithin the arrival of the organ. Sea water intrudes into Chennai neighbourhood, houses damaged

A number of houses were seriously damaged and a couple of them flattened here at a fishing neighbourhood abutting the shore following intrusion of sea water over the past one week, residents said today. Ruling AIADMK local MLA and former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, R Nataraj, who inspected the affected area, said only "23 houses were damaged." Government is ready to provide them alternative accomodation, they said. "Immediate relief (to meet basic needs like food) has been provided and fisheries department is looking into the matter," the MLA said. Residents have urged the government for safe, alternative dwelling units. "Sea water intrusion has damaged my house badly and now I have moved on to a rented accomodation nearby," said T Vetri, a fisherman-resident of Srinivasapuram at Foreshore Estate. WR launches special precautionary safety drive for monsoon

Western Railway has launched a special precautionary safety drive across its entire network to ensure safe travel for its passengers during extreme weather conditions in monsoon season. "The special safety drive, launched earlier this week, will continue till the end of September during which WR's all divisions will be put on the alert mode to prevent accidents due to cyclonic storm, heavy rainfall, landslides etc," a senior WR official added. Special precautions will be taken in areas that are prone to landslides, hill slips, boulder fallings etc. and proper patrolling will be carried out in the vulnerable and identified sections. Toll in Assam flood rises to 31

The overall flood situation in Assam improved marginally today, even as three more persons lost their lives, taking the death toll in flood-related incidents to 31. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 68,000 people were affected by the flood in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, as against the 71,058 people yesterday. Karimganj is the worst-affected district with nearly 44,000 people hit by the current wave of flood, followed by Hailakandi with around 10,000 affected people, the ASDMA report stated. It said currently 144 villages are still inundated, while the number yesterday was 165. The Jia Bharali river is flowing above the danger mark at N T Road Crossing in Sonitpur district. Flood waters have damaged roads, embankments and other infrastructure in Biswanath and Karimganj districts. Rly keymen, incharge of detecting track defects, want shorter 'beat length'

Railways keymen, who walk 8 km everyday inspecting every crack and every nut and bolt to detect defects on tracks and ensure their repair in time for trains to pass, have pleaded with the railway board to reduce their 'beat length' to 3 km, which, they say, will improve safety. The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR)have written to the board stating that the 2.2 lakh keymen on the payroll of the national transporter, who are considered railways' last line of defence against safety issues actually walk double their beat length - to and fro - carrying equipment and other necessities which weigh around 14 kg. Rescue operation underway for missing Jharkhand Jaguar personnel
