US court rules watchdog chief must stay, calls Trump's removal bid unlawful

The head of a federal watchdog agency must remain in his job, a judge in Washington has ruled, saying President Donald Trump's bid to remove the special counsel was unlawful. US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Saturday sided with Hampton Dellinger, who leads the Office of Special Counsel, in a legal battle over the president's authority to oust the head of the independent agency that's likely headed back to the US Supreme Court. Dellinger sued Trump last month after he was fired even though the law says special counsels can be removed by the president only for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office. Jackson, who was nominated to the bench by Democratic president Barack Obama, quickly reinstated Dellinger in the job while he pursued his case. The ruling comes as Dellinger is challenging the removal of probationary workers who were fired as part of the Trump administration's massive overhaul of the government. A federal board on Tuesday halted the terminations o

Trump's thrashing of Zelenskyy highlights Western allies' limited influence

All it took was 90 seconds for weeks of tortured diplomacy to unwind in spectacular fashion. President Donald Trump's Oval Office thrashing of Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday laid bare the limits of a full-court press by America's allies aimed at reshaping Trump's determination to end Russia's invasion even if the terms are not to Ukraine's liking. It also stressed the profound ways Trump feels emboldened to redirect US foreign policy priorities toward his America First agenda in ways that extend well beyond those of his tumultuous first term. The sudden blowup was the most heated public exchange of words between world leaders in the Oval Office in memory, as the usual staid work of diplomacy descended into finger-pointing, shouting and eye-rolling. The encounter left the future of the US-Ukraine relationship, and Kyiv's ability to defend itself in the brutal conflict with Russia, in mortal jeopardy. You either make a deal or we are out, Trump told Zelenskyy, underscoring

Federal workers start to get new email demanding their accomplishments

Federal employees are starting to receive another email requiring them to explain their recent accomplishments, a renewed attempt by President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to demand answers from the government workforce. The plan was disclosed by a person with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. Originally expected to go out Saturday, the new request began landing in the inboxes of some employees late Friday. The first email, which was distributed a week ago, asked employees what did you do last week? and prompted them to list five tasks that they completed. Musk, who empowered by Trump is aiming to downsize agencies and eliminate thousands of federal jobs, said anyone who didn't respond would be fired. Many agencies, meanwhile, told their workforces not to respond or issued conflicting guidance. The second email was expected to be delivered in a different way, according to the person with

Trump administration approves nearly $3 billion arms sale to Israel

The Trump administration has approved a major nearly USD 3 billion arms sale to Israel, bypassing a normal congressional review to provide the country with more of the 2,000-pound bombs that it has used in the war against Hamas in Gaza. In a series of notifications sent to Congress late Friday, the State Department said it had signed off on the sale of more than 35,500 MK 84 and BLU-117 bombs and 4,000 Predator warheads worth USD 2.04 billion. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has determined and provided detailed justification that an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale to the Government of Israel of the above defence articles and defense services in the national security interests of the United States, thereby waiving the Congressional review requirements, the department said. Deliveries are set to begin next year, it said. Using the same justification, the department also said Rubio had approved another munitions sale to Israel worth USD 675.7 million to be delivered .

Trump likely to sign order designating English as official language of US

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, according to the White House. The order will allow government agencies and organizations that receive federal funding to choose whether to continue to offer documents and services in language other than English, according to a fact sheet about the impending order. Trump had been expected to sign the order Friday. But by Friday night, the White House had not announced the order had been signed and did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. The executive order will rescind a mandate from former President Bill Clinton that required the government and organisations that received federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers. Designating English as the national language promotes unity, establishes efficiency in government operations, and creates a pathway for civic engagement, according to the White House. More than 30

US Judge finds mass firings of federal probationary workers to be unlawful

A federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday found that the mass firings of probationary employees were likely unlawful, granting temporary relief to a coalition of labor unions and organizations that has sued to stop the Trump administration's massive dismantling of the federal workforce. US District Judge William Alsup ordered the Office of Personnel Management to inform certain federal agencies that it had no authority to order the firings of probationary employees, including at the Department of Defense. OPM does not have any authority whatsoever, under any statute in the history of the universe, to hire or fire any employees but its own, Alsup said. The complaint filed by five labour unions and five nonprofit organizations is among multiple lawsuits pushing back on the administration's efforts to shrink a workforce that Trump has called bloated and sloppy. Thousands of probationary employees have already been fired, and his administration is now aiming at career officials with

USAID workers begin to leave amid Trump's final push to dismantle agency

US Agency for International Development workers many in tears carted away belongings through cheering crowds in a final visit to their now-closed headquarters Thursday as the Trump administration's rapid dismantling of the congressionally authorized agency moved into its final stages. Notices sent out in mass mailings this week are terminating over 90% of USAID's contracts for humanitarian and development work around the world, and the Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a judge's order requiring the administration to release billions of dollars in foreign aid. The administration notified most USAID staffers in recent days that they were on leave or being fired, then gave thousands of those who worked in the Washington headquarters 15-minute time slots to clear out their desks under the escort of federal officers. Some staffers wept as they carried out grocery bags and suitcases with what was left from their life's work. Heartbreaking, 25-year-old Juliane Alfen said, carrying a

Mexico sends drug lord Quintero, 28 other prisoners to US with officials

Mexico has sent drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was behind the killing of a US DEA agent in 1985, to the United States with 28 prisoners requested by the US government, a Mexican government official and other sources confirmed Thursday. It comes as top Mexican officials are in Washington trying to head off the Trump administration's threat of imposing 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports next week. The official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, confirmed Caro Quintero's removal. Another person familiar with Mexico's actions also confirmed the removal on the condition of anonymity because they were unable to discuss sensitive diplomatic negotiations. Mexico's Attorney General's Office said in a statement that the 29 prisoners sent to the US Thursday faced charges related to drug trafficking among other crimes. Also among the list were two leaders of the Los Zetas cartel, Mexicans Miguel Trevio Morales and his brother Omar Trevio Morales

Pentagon orders purge of social sites to dump diversity mentions by March 5

Building lethality in the military may be the buzzword for the new Trump administration, but busywork and paperwork have become the reality at the Pentagon, as service members and civilian workers are facing a broad mandate to purge all of the department's social media sites and untangle confusing personnel reduction moves. On Wednesday, the department's top public affairs official signed and sent out a new memo requiring all the military services to spend countless hours poring over years of website postings, photos, news articles and videos to remove any mentions that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. If they can't do that by March 5, they have been ordered to temporarily remove from public display" all content published during the Biden administration's four years in office, according to a copy of the memo obtained by The Associated Press. The new directive comes as the military services also are scrambling to identify probationary workers the administration has targeted f
