Tape reveals Trump pressured officials not to certify 2020 vote: Report

Donald Trump pressured two election officials not to certify 2020 vote totals in a key Michigan county, according to a recording of a post-election phone call disclosed in a new report by The Detroit News. The former president 's 2024 campaign neither confirmed nor denied the recording's legitimacy, insisting in a statement that all of Trump's actions after his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden were taken to uphold his oath of office and ensure fair elections. Trump has consistently repeated falsehoods about the 2020 election as he runs again for the White House. No evidence has emerged in a litany of federal, state and outside investigations of voter fraud that could have changed the outcome of the election. The November 17, 2020 telephone call included then-President Trump, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Wayne County elections authorities Monica Palmer and William Hartmann, both of them Republicans, The Detroit News reported. Trump told the two canvassers .

New Mexico's major parties prepare for June presidential primary ballot

New Mexico's major political parties are scheduled to certify presidential contenders to appear on the state's June 4 primary ballot, amid uncertainty about whether Donald Trump can be barred from contention by any state under anti-insurrection provisions of the U.S. Constitution. Party-certified presidential candidates will be vetted in February by the New Mexico secretary of state's office to ensure they meet administrative requirements to run for the office. New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, said she won't exclude candidates that meet administrative requirements unless a court with jurisdiction intervenes. The Colorado Supreme Court on Tuesday barred Trump from the state's ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits anyone from holding office who swore an oath to support the Constitution and then engaged in insurrection against it. It's the first time in history the provision has been used to prohibit someone from running for the

Biden denounces Trump as 'doubling down' on support for insurrection

President Joe Biden said it's self-evident that Donald Trump is an insurrectionist for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss but stopped short of commenting on a Colorado legal case that would bar him from the state's ballot. The Democratic president made the comments about his likely Republican opponent in next year's election shortly after landing in Milwaukee for an event focused on the economy. Whether the 14th Amendment applies or not, we'll let the court make that decision," Biden told reporters on the tarmac after stepping off Air Force One. "But he certainly supported an insurrection. There's no question about it. None. Zero. And he seems to be doubling down on it. Biden also criticised Trump for his recent comments that migrants were poisoning the blood of the country. "I don't believe, as the former president said again yesterday, that immigrants are polluting our blood," Biden said in a speech at the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce. The economy and our nation are

WEC rejects complaint against Trump's fake electors for second time

Wisconsin's bipartisan elections commission, for a second time, has unanimously rejected a complaint against fake presidential electors who attempted to cast the state's ballots for Donald Trump in 2020. The Wisconsin Elections Commission first rejected the complaint in March 2022. But a judge in May ordered the commission to rehear the complaint, this time without one of its members who served as one of the fake electors for the former president. The commission released its unanimous 5-0 decision to reject the complaint Wednesday without explaining why. The elections commission's discussion of the complaint, as well as its vote on Tuesday, was conducted in closed meetings. The complaint asked the elections commission to investigate the fake electors' actions and declare that they broke the law. Last year, when it rejected the complaint the first time, the commission attached a letter from the Wisconsin Department of Justice that said that Republicans who attempted to cast the stat

Nikki Haley, Ramaswamy oppose court decision barring Trump from presidency

Indian-American presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy on Wednesday opposed the Colorado Supreme Court decision to disqualify Donald Trump from the presidency next year in the state because of his role in the attack on the US Capitol in 2021. The disqualification of the 77-year-old former president on Tuesday was based on the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which says officials who take an oath to support the US Constitution are banned from future office if they "engaged in insurrection." Trump is currently the front-runner in the Republican Party's nomination process for the race for the White House in 2024. Responding to Trump's disqualification, two-term former South Carolina Governor and a rival to Trump in the Republican primaries, Haley, said that "the last thing we want" is judges deciding who can and cannot be on the presidential ballot. "I will tell you that I don't think Donald Trump needs to be president. I think I need to be president. I think that's goo

Trump defends comments about immigrants poisoning nation's blood in Iowa

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his comments about migrants crossing the southern border poisoning the blood of America, and he reinforced the message while denying any similarities to fascist writings others had noted. I never read Mein Kampf,' Trump said at a campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa, referencing Adolf Hitler's fascist manifesto. Immigrants in the US illegally, Trump said, are destroying the blood of our country, they're destroying the fabric of our country". In the speech to more than 1,000 supporters from a podium flanked by Christmas trees in red MAGA hats, Trump responded to mounting criticism about his rhetoric over the weekend, when he doubled down on anti-immigrant blood purity remarks in front of several thousand supporters in New Hampshire. They're poisoning the blood of our country, Trump said in New Hampshire about the record numbers of immigrants coming to the US without immediate legal status. At Tuesday's rally, he reprised his comments fr

Judge criticises Trump's witness, refuses request to toss fraud lawsuit

Former President Donald Trump has lost his latest bid to end the business fraud lawsuit he faces in New York as he campaigns to reclaim the White House. Judge Arthur Engoron issued a written ruling on Monday denying the Republican's latest request for a verdict in his favour in a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. And in doing so, the judge dismissed the credibility of one of Trump's expert witnesses at the trial, a professor who testified that he saw no fraud in the former president's financial statements. The trial is centred on allegations Trump and other company officials exaggerated his wealth and inflated the value of his assets to secure loans and close business deals. In the three-page ruling, Engoron wrote that the most glaring flaw of Trump's argument was to assume that the testimony provided by Eli Bartov, an accounting professor at New York University, and other expert witnesses would be accepted by the court as true and accurate. Bartov is a .

Trump's lawyers ask appeals court to review gag order curbing his speech

Lawyers for Donald Trump asked the full federal appeals court in Washington to review a gag order restricting the former president's speech in the case charging him with plotting to overturn the 2020 election. The request on Monday follows a decision by a three-judge panel of the appeals court that upheld but narrowed a gag order that barred Trump from verbally attacking witnesses over their participation in the case and imposed other restrictions on what he may say. In requesting that the entire court take up the matter, Trump's lawyers argued the panel's decision earlier this month contradicted Supreme Court precedent and rulings from other appeals courts. They said a fresh consideration was needed both to secure uniformity of this Court's decisions and because of the question's exceptional importance. This petition presents a question of exceptional importance: Whether a district court may gag the core political speech of the leading candidate for President of the United States

Talks on border security grind on as Trump invokes Nazi-era blood rhetoric

Negotiators rushed to reach a US border security deal on Sunday that would unlock President Joe Biden's request for billions of dollars worth of military aid for Ukraine and other national security needs before senators leave town for the holiday recess. The Biden administration, which is becoming more deeply involved in the talks, is facing pressure from all sides over any deal. The administration and Senate negotiators had hoped to reach a framework by the weekend, but that's deeply uncertain. The talks come as Donald Trump, the Republican presidential frontrunner in 2024, delivered alarming anti-immigrant remarks about blood purity over the weekend, echoing Nazi slogans of World War II to cheers at a political rally. They're poisoning the blood of our country, Trump said about the record numbers of immigrants coming to the US without immediate legal status. Speaking in the early-voting state of New Hampshire, Trump, drew on words similar to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kempf as the forme
