Suicides not due to bungling of exam results: Education board

: The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) Sunday said it has carried out an analysis of the scripts of students who had allegedly committed suicide and found that none of the cases was linked to error in publication of the exam results. Though 22 students had allegedly committed suicide and that three attempted to take the extreme step, the board in a statement termed the media reports that the suicides were due to error in the publication of results as allegations and there was not truth in them. The board said it got all the scripts of candidates who committed suicides and got it re-verified by the subject experts by forming a committee and checked for any errors either in evaluating the answer scripts, posting of marks or for totalling mistakes. In all the cases, the board found that there were no major errors which would change the marks of students from fail to pass, the release said. Kerala SSLC results to be declared on May 6

The Kerala government would declare the results of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) or Class 10 board examination tomorrow. In a release, the education department said, Education Minister C Raveendranath would hold a press conference here at 2 PM to announce details of the results. Students can also check their results on websites including, www.dhsekerala.gov.in, www.kerala.gov.in, and www.keralaresults.nic.in. The board exams were held from March 13 to 28 in which over 4.35 lakh students appeared across 2,923 centres in the state and nine centres each in Lakshadweep and Gulf countries. A total of 2,12,615 girls appeared for the exams. The government had set up 54 centralised camps for the valuation of the answer sheets which began on April 5 and ended on May 2.

Train delay, change in exam centres bars students from taking

A delayed Hampi express train and change of examination centres reportedly without any prior information prevented a large number of students from appearing for the NEET examination here Sunday. Students ran from pillar to post in a vain bid to appear for the exam. As the chaos marred the examination in Bengaluru, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy joined students and their parents to demand that a special examination for those who could not appear for NEET be held. In a tweet he said, hundreds of students from North Karnataka districts missed the test here due to a 7-hour delay of the Hampi Express train. Hundreds of students miss NEET exam in Karnataka due to train delay

Hundreds of students from Karnataka missed the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) on Sunday as their train reached Bengaluru an hour after the scheduled reporting time for the exam, officials said. Over 13 lakh students had registered for the exam for admission to MBBS and BDS courses which was conducted by the HRD Ministry's National Testing Agency (NTA) for the first time. The exam was conducted successfully in rest part of the country, officials said. Two school students crushed to death by speeding truck

Two school students were crushed to death by a speeding truck in Bihar's East Champaran district on Sunday, police said. The deceased have been identified as Piyush Kumar (13) and Usha Kumari (15), Piprakothi police station SHO Abhishek Ranjan said, adding that Piyush and Usha were students of class 8 and 9. Piyush Kumar was the nephew of Usha Kumari, he said. The incident occurred on NH 28 in Majher village when the two were on their way to a coaching institute, the SHO said, adding that both students died on the spot. Police have seized the truck and arrested its driver, SHO said. Angry villagers damaged several vehicles and furniture of police station, he said, adding that the villagers also partially damaged some shops and blocked the stretch of the NH 28 for an hour in protest against the incident. Cop's timely gesture helps student take NEET

Timely help from a police constable helped a student appear for NEET Sunday after the latter arrived at the examination hall without his photograph. The constable P Saravanakumar, on security duty at the National Model School, a NEET exam centre, noticed a student looking helpless and wandering about aimlessly. On inquiry, the student told the constable he had forgotten to bring his photograph without which one cannot take the test. Understanding the situation, Saravankumar took Rs 40 from his pocket and handed it over to the anxious student to enable him take the photograph which he eventually took and attended the exam. The gesture of the policeman won the appreciation of one and all at the exam venue.

We'll meet Prez, Home Minister over exam results issue: BJP

University of Houston renames engineering building after Indian-American couple

A building at the University of Houston has been renamed after an Indian-American couple in recognition of their contribution to aid research projects, faculty and students at the varsity. The university, a public research college founded in 1927, renamed its Engineering Research Building after Durga D Agrawal and Sushila, long-time Houstonians, on April 26, university officials said. Indian-American chancellor and president of the university Renu Khator, Consul General of India Anupam Ray, members of the Indian community, students and faculty were present at the building dedication ceremony. The USD 51-million building, which opened in 2017, had earlier named a floor after the couple. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified in a statement that the news which is being circulated on several media platforms with regard to the declaration of class X results is incorrect.A statement from Rama Sharma, PRO, CBSE, read: "There is unconfirmed fake news being circulated on some social media platforms about CBSE class X results being announced today. It is to inform all Principals, students, parents and public that CBSE class X results will not be declared today. Results in re-verification supervised by govt institutions:BIE

The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) in Telangana, which has come unde flak for alleged goof up in declaration of results, Saturday sought to reassure failed students and parents of reverification of answersheets, saying the results are supervised by state run bodies. The Board said re-verification of (failed) answer sheets of students has been taken up since April 25 as per government instructions and the marks thus obtained would be sent to BIE. A newly appointed agency selected by the state-run Telanagna State Technological Services would process the results as per the marks received by the Board, a BIE release said. This agency and the one chosen earlier would both process the results separately prior to announcement, it said. Newly-married couple found dead in Visva-Bharati campus

A newly-married couple was found dead at Visva-Bharati university campus in Birbhum district, police said on Saturday. The bodies were found near Cheena Bhavana, located within the campus, on Friday late night, the police said. The Department of Chinese Language & Culture of Visva-Bharati university is known as Cheena Bhavana. The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Somnath Mahato and 19-year-old Abantika, a police officer said. The couple had got married recently and both of them were students of Srinanda High School at Bolpur, the police officer said. Drug racket busted in TN's Coimbatore, over 150 college students held

A major drug racket was busted at a resort near Pollachi in the district and over 150 college students were arrested in the early hours of Saturday, police said. Based on a complaint that a large number of students, who were camping in the resort since Friday night, were involved in drug abuse, a raid was conducted, they said. A total of 159 students were allegedly under the influence of ganja, cocaine, intravenous drugs, sedatives and also liquor when they were arrested, police said. Majority of the students were from neighbouring Kerala and studying in private colleges in and around Coimbatore, they said. Six employees of the resort were also arrested while the owner was at large, police said, adding that a large number of narcotic substances and vehicles were seized from the resort. Meanwhile, District Collector K Rajamani has issued an order to seal the resort, official sources said.
