Pass TET to qualify as teacher, says Madras High Court

The Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to issue showcause notice, returnable in two weeks, to all unqualified teachers who have not cleared the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). The court sought to know how it could conclude that a teacher was qualifed to continue in the post when the teacher was unable to pass the TET within eight years. Justice S M Subramaniam, disposing of four petitions by teachers Kasthurba Gandhi Baliga Vidyalaya Residential School, Perungalathur, who failed the test, said Tuesday that 60,000 fully qualified teachers who have cleared it or national eligibility tests were waiting and aspiring to be teachers. Therefore, there was no reason for the government to retain such unqualified teachers in the post, the judge said. In respect of implementing the qualifications, there could not be any leniency or misplaced sympathy by the Tamil Nadu government as this would be detrimental to the national educational policy, as well as in the .

Goa minister proposes agriculture subject in school syllabus

Goa Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai Wednesday proposed that agriculture be made part of school curriculum in the coastal state. Addressing a gathering at Fatorda in South Goa, the minister said the students who prefer farming as a profession in future, would become model citizens if they are taught agriculture in schools. "Like History and Civics, agriculture should also become a part of school curriculum as a work experience. The students who take up agriculture should get more marks. A child would become a model Goan citizen after practicing agriculture (sic)," the minister said, adding that he would discuss his proposal with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. Goa Opinion Poll to be part of school history syllabus

The historic Opinion Poll or referendum of 1967 during which people of Goa voted against merger with Maharashtra will feature in a history textbook from the new academic year, a senior official said Wednesday. The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has decided to include a chapter on the Goa Opinion Poll in standard IX history book from this year. GBSHSE chairman Ramakrishna Samant said former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had directed that the Opinion Poll should be part of school curriculum. The Goa Forward Party led by deputy chief minister Vijai Sardesai had also demanded that the Opinion Poll be part of school syllabus. Four students killed as car plunges into pit in Telangana

Four engineering college students including two girls were killed when their car fell into a roadside pit in Yadadri-Bhongir district of Telangana, police said Wednesday. The students were proceeding from Bommalaramaram to Kondamadugu last night when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into a pit by the road, they said. 2 dead, 4 injured in North Carolina campus shooting

A man armed with a pistol opened fire on students at a North Carolina university during the last day of classes Tuesday, killing two people and wounding four, police said. Officers who had gathered ahead of a campus concert raced over and disarmed the suspect. The shooting prompted a lockdown at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and caused widespread panic across campus as students scrambled to take shelter. "Just loud bangs. Students in Punjab college protest after girls forced to strip over used sanitary pad

Four employees of the Akal University here have been terminated following an incident where girls in one of the hostels in the campus were allegedly asked to strip by a warden.Girls students at the varsity staged a protest here on Tuesday after the warden of the on-campus hostel allegedly asked them to strip in order to check who was menstruating and could have dumped a used sanitary pad in the toilet.Two security guards and two wardens were terminated following the incident."We received a complaint from the students following which a committee was set up and four employees were immediately terminated," said MS Johal, Dean, Academics, Akal University."We are trying to maintain a healthy relationship and two-way communication with the students so that such incidents do not occur again," Johal added.

Inter results probe report fake, tampered: Congress

Gujarat HC orders state govt to install CCTVs in schools

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday ordered the state government to install CCTV cameras in government schools and make them mandatory in grant-in-aid and private schools. It asked the state to file an affidavit on its progress by June 29. The order of a bench of acting Chief Justice Anant S Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav came in response to a PIL filed by Deepak Dhakana in September 2017 seeking a direction to the state government to install CCTV cameras in schools in order to ensure safety of students after incidents of child molestation in schools were reported in Ahmedabad. The purpose of such CCTV cameras would also be to regulate academic activities and to ensure that classes are held properly, the PIL said. The cameras were proposed to be installed both in the school premises and inside the classrooms. The results of ICSE Class 10 and ISC Class 12 examinations will be announced on May 7, an official said Tuesday. The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISEC), which conducts the exams, will announce the results at 3 pm. "The council will announce the results at 3 pm on May 7. Online higher education enrolment to reach 63.63 lakh by 2022: Report

People registering for higher education online is expected to grow at 14.5 per cent and will reach 63.63 lakh by 2022, says a report. According to a report from Schoolguru Eduserve (a TeamLease group company), the UGC regulations for online programmes allowing Universities in India to offer online degree programmes and the government's impetus on improving gross enrolment ratio (GER) will boost the industry. The enrolment in online degree or diploma programmes will witness a 14.5 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and will reach 63.63 lakh by 2022. As per the report, the enrolment growth that India will witness in the near future would be somewhere close to that of the United States of America and Europe. During the academic year 2015-17, the online higher education enrolment in the US and Europe were 16 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively. The report further noted that the total enrolment in online education is estimated at 33.6 per cent CAGR and cross 2.12 crore by 2022.

89.59 pc students pass HSSC exam in Goa

Around 89.59 per cent students passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (HSSC) conducted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, a senior official said on Tuesday. The board chairman, Ramakrishna Samant, while announcing the results here, said around four per cent more students passed this year than in 2018. Nearly 17,000 students appeared in the examination. "Of them 89.59 per cent passed against 85.84 per cent in 2018," Samant said. Of the total students who appeared for exams in various subjects, 87.73 per cent passed in the arts stream, 91.86 per cent in commerce and 91.76 in science, he said. The results showed that girls outshone boys with 91.97 per cent of females passing the examination against 86.91 per cent males. Samant said the pass percentage was highest at Mapusa centre in North Goa district and lowest at Sankhalim in the same district. A 46-year old man and his daughter here have cleared the SSLC (Class X) public examination together, results of which were released Monday. Subramanian, a field inspector in the Public Works Department here possessed a pass certificate, testifying to his being a Standard VII candidate, when he joined duty on compassionate grounds a few years ago. He appeared for the ESLC examination (Class VIII) as a private candidate in 2017 for want of necessary qualification to get promotion. Schoolgirls complain to Delhi women's panel about being harassed by male classmates

Schoolgirls from Bhati Mines area in south Delhi complained on Monday to the Delhi Commission For Women about being harassed by their male classmates, following which the women's panel directed police to take action. At a 'Mahila Panchayat' meeting in the area, the eleven-year-old girls from a nearby school while returning home met DCW chief Swati Maliwal and told her that boys whistle at them, make catcalls and even stalk them, the DCW said.
