Congress leader writes to Sushma seeking steps to free Indian

The Congress Thursday urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to take steps for setting free Indian students detained in America for enrolling in a fake university there. In a letter to Swaraj, AICC spokesperson Sravan Dasoju said even more than a month since their detention, the students had neither been produced in a court nor allowed to post a bond and get released. "They are being punished much before the crime is proved in the courts of law," he said in the letter, copies of which were marked to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, TRS working president K T Rama Rao and and US Consul General here Katherine B Hadda. Those detained belong to middle class families, he said alleging that the students were being subjected to severe harassment and deprived of even quality food. Decide on prof's leave application in 3 days or VC will have to be present in court: HC to JNU

The Delhi High Court told the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday that if it did not take a decision on the leave application of one of its professors within three days, the vice-chancellor (VC) would have to be personally present before it to explain the delay. "Take a decision in three days, failing which the vice-chancellor shall be personally present in court on the next date," Justice Suresh Kait said and listed the matter for further hearing on February 26. The university, represented by the Centre's standing counsel Monika Arora and advocate Harsh Ahuja, assured the court that a decision would be taken within the stipulated time. The court direction came on a plea moved by Kavita Singh, Dean of the School of Arts and Aesthetics in JNU, who was yet to be granted leave by the university to travel abroad for a fellowship programme. Yet to come across any evidence supporting sedition charges against AMU students: Police

Police said Thursday they have so far not found any evidence to support the sedition charges levelled against 14 Aligarh Muslim University after protests broke out on the campus earlier this week. The AMU authorities suspended eight students late Wednesday night in connection with the protest during which a motorcycle allegedly belonging to a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), BJP's youth wing, was set on fire. The police had booked the students for sedition after BJYM activist Mukesh Lodhi filed a complaint, alleging that he was assaulted amid chants of ant-India and pro-Pakistan slogans on Tuesday. BJP's students' wing ABVP had protested reported plans by AIMIM lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi to visit the campus. Students pull rickshaws on V Day to show their appreciation

To mark Valentine's Day 42 students of various colleges of the city pulled rickshaws on its throughfares with those who ply them as passengers. Some of the students who took part in this programme were girls. The students pulled the hand pulled rickshaws along a three km busy stretch between Bank of India Crossing on Amherst Street to M G Road via B B Ganguly Street and College Street in central Kolkata, one of the organisers Saptak Biswas, himself a journalism student, said. Cycle rickshwas are not allowed to ply on the main streets of the city proper. While 42 students pulled as many rickshaws, around 65 others from over 20 colleges in the city walked with them along the route. Students in Jammu boycott classes for 3rd day against 'objectionable' slogans by Kashmiri passengers

Hundreds of college students here boycotted classes and held protests for the third consecutive day Thursday against "objectionable" slogans allegedly raised by some stranded Kashmir-bound passengers. On Monday, a scuffle had broken out between a group of students and some of the stranded passengers outside the Gandhi Memorial Science College here but timely intervention by police had brought the situation under control. Free sanitary pads for girls of civic-run schools in Vadodara

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in Gujarat on Thursday launched an initiative to provide sanitary napkins free of cost to girls studying in civic-run schools. The sanitary pad vending machines have been installed in 10 schools of the city, VMC commissioner Ajay Bhadoo said after inaugurating one of the machines set up at the Stree Adhyapan Mandir college here. "The VMC has started providing sanitary napkins to girls free of cost from today. These machines have been installed in 10 schools out of 104 schools run by VMC. The remaining schools will also get these machines soon," he said. The machine is easy to operate, requires low maintenance and comes with an incinerator unit to dispose the sanitary napkins, he said.

BJP in UP, Cong in MP examples of 'state terror', says Mayawati

The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and the Congress regime in Madhya Pradesh are examples of "state terror" and should be condemned, BSP chief Mayawati said on Thursday. Rajasthan govt forms committees to review school textbooks

The Rajasthan government has set up two committees of experts and educationists to review syllabus of school textbooks from class 1 to 8 and from class 9 to 12. Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasara alleged that the previous BJP government has tried to impose certain contents in the name of change in syllabus by neglecting history, culture and great personalities. "The previous government had made certain changes in syllabus for fulfilling its political interest. Our government is against politics in education and keeping that in mind, committees have been set up to review the syllabus," the minister said. The committee to review the syllabus of class 1 to 8 will be coordinated by I V Trivedi while the coordinator for the four-member committee for class 9-12 is former chairman of Rajasthan State Public Service Commission BM Sharma. Each committee has three members besides the coordinator. Both the committees will submit their reports to the government on February 20.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee Wednesday met vice-chancellors of three state-run universities and discuss establishment of a network aimed at improving academic standard of students of different disciplines studying in the institutions. Delhi govt launches entrepreneurship curriculum for students of Classes 9-12 in state-run schools

The Delhi government launched an entrepreneurship curriculum on Wednesday for the students of Classes 9 to 12 in state-run schools, which Deputy Chief Minister Manish Siodia said would solve the employment issues in the country. The Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum Framework was developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). According to the government, the curriculum will inspire students through various entrepreneurial stories, case studies and many mindfulness activities and approaches. At the event, Sisodia announced that the government would give entrepreneurial seed money worth Rs 1,000 each to the students of 11th and 12th standards and Rs 5,000 each to college students. The cost of this scheme -- approximately Rs 40-50 crore -- would be allocated by the Delhi government from the next financial year onwards, he said.
