Sonowal lays foundation stone of engineering college

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of an engineering college in Biswanath district Wednesday, an official release said here. The chief minister expressed confidence that the proposed engineering college at Jorabari would emerge as an institution of excellence in the field of technical education. He hoped that the institution would inspire the students of the north bank of the Brahmaputra river in their academic pursuits, the release said. Sonowal also highlighted the initiatives taken up for improving of communication by construction of several bridges over the Brahmaputra. The state government has taken up various projects to make education affordable to students of financially disadvantaged families, he said. The chief minister also urged the people to be alert against divisive forces who were trying to foment trouble in the society.

School teacher found hanging from ceiling

A female teacher was Wednesday found hanging from the ceiling in her room at the Kasturba Gandhi Residential School in Hariharganj in Palamau district, the police said. The 30-year-old teacher, who was given the charge of warden a month ago, was found hanging from the ceiling by the students, who went to her room after not finding her in the school, the police said. Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Agrahari said no suicide note was found. The district administration asked the police to probe into the incident on priority, he said. In a separate incident in Jharkhands Giridih a youth, identified as Sumit Kandhwe, was found hanging from the ceiling Wednesday morning. The incident took place under Giridih town police station, the police sources said. Kandhwe was said to be suffering from depression, the police said.

Uttarakhand school shocker: Medical report confirms sexual assault, say police

The girl gang-raped in a leading school on the outskirts of the city and her father Wednesday recorded their statements before a local court while her medical report confirmed sexual assault, police said. A check by the state education department found the school had violated several safety norms and it could soon lose its license, an official said. The victim and her father recorded their statements before the court of Additional District Judge (Civil) Manju Singh, Investigating Officer Naresh Rathore said. The medical report has also arrived confirming the victim was sexually assaulted, Rathore said. PIL in HC against AAP govt circular seeking Aadhaar & voter details of school students, their family

An AAP government circular calling for Aadhaar and voter ID details of students of all the schools in the city as well as their siblings and parents was on Wednesday challenged in the Delhi High Court. The public interest litigation (PIL) was mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao which allowed it to be listed for hearing on Thursday. The petition, moved by the Government School Teachers Association, has challenged the September 11 circular of the Directorate of Education (DoE) which has asked all the schools in the national capital to collect Aadhaar and voter ID details of the over 87 lakh students and their family members by September 21. It contended that the documents and signatures were being sought in complete violation of law. JNUSU president meets Kejriwal

Newly elected Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president N Sai Balaji met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday and discussed several issues pertaining to the varsity. In a press statement issued by him, Balaji said he apprised the chief minister of the campus violence and the conduct of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). "ABVP's rising terror and violence in JNU on students and inaction of JNU VC against these ABVP students involved in campus violence and how they are being shielded was briefed to the CM," he said. 'Didi-kaka' scheme of cops to educate students about safety

The Thane police in Maharashtra have decided to adopt schools to educate students about various safety measures in a bid to prevent sexual abuse and other crimes against children. Under the 'didi-kaka' scheme, children will be made aware about the difference between a 'good touch' and a 'bad touch', a senior police official said. The scheme was launched Tuesday by District Superintendent of Police Shivaji Rathod at a function here. Security personnel, who are referred as police didi' and 'police kaka', will visit schools once a week and interact with students to know about their problems, Rathod said. "This is necessary because of the increasing crimes against females," he said. Children will be provided details of their police station area concerned, and the phone numbers on which they can contact the police in case of an emergency, he said. They also plan to organise debates, essay-writing activities and symposia in schools to educate the children about how to stay safe

Dehradun: Nine held for gang-rape of minor

Nine people -including five staffers and four students of a Dehradun school, were arrested for the alleged gang-rape of a class 10 student.An attempt to make the girl undergo abortion was also made by them.The five staff members and an adult student have been sent to 14 days judicial custody, while three minors have been sent to a juvenile correctional home.The girl was gang-raped last month inside the school store.The matter came to light when the victim narrated her ordeal to her elder sister.The court has also held the school responsible for attempting to suppress the case.

Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev's visit to the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) here has been cancelled, a senior official said Tuesday. Donning a new role, former president Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday delivered a lecture as a visiting faculty at the Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Minor raped in Dehradun school; 9 arrested

A class 10 student of a boarding school here was allegedly gang-raped last month, after which a total of nine people have been arrested, including four students and five staff members of the school.The incident came to light when the victim, who complained of constant stomach aches and sickness, was found to be pregnant.
