Maharashtra school textbooks do away with gender stereotypes

Generations of school students have grown up with textbooks having the image of a mother cutting vegetables in the kitchen, while the father reads a newspaper, but this will now change in Maharashtra. Keeping up with the changing social structure, Balbharati, the state curriculum board, has changed many of its illustrations and texts to uphold gender equality and portray women in a more progressive light, officials said. The revised textbooks aim to do away with gender stereotypes, they said. The Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, popularly known as Blabharati, wants to break the stereotypes and has incorporated illustrations and stories of men and women sharing household chores in the revised textbooks of Class II, a board official said. Odisha Joint Entrance Examination results announced

The results of Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE), 2019 held both in online and offline, were announced here Wednesday. While Pradeep Kumar Kampa has topped the test in MBA, Smitarani Choudhury ranked number one in MCA course. Swikruti Mohapatra has topped in Integrated MBA. Similarly, Samir Kumar Padhi and Pradeep Kumar Barik are toppers in B.Pharm and M.Tech courses, respectively, said Skill Development & Technical Education Minister Premanand Nayak said. Total 25,731 candidates had appeared for the entrance test offline while 13,918 students gave the exam online. Vedantu to expand in smaller cities, launches live online teaching platform

Online education company Vedantu Wednesday said it expects to clock strong growth this year as it expands its presence into smaller cities in the Indian market, offering live tutoring on its platform. The company, which has raised about USD 16 million in funding from investors like China's TAL Education, Omidyar Network and Accel Partners among others, has about 10 million school students accessing Vedantu (app and YouTube channel) monthly from over 1,000 cities. "Unlike some other online education platforms, we offer live classes. This was more one-to-one, but now we want to offer the same solution to a larger audience," Vedantu co-founder and CEO Vamsi Krishna told PTI. T'gana BJP to stage protests over exorbitant school fees:

BJP's Telangana unit president K Laxman Tuesday said his party would stage protests against private schools which are collecting excessive fees. "Highest fees collection in Telangana, lowest government response. That is the situation," he said at a 'round table on exorbitant fee structure in corporate and private schools', organised by the BJP. In CBSE schools in Hyderabad, according to information collected by parents' associations and others, fee ranged from Rs 60,000 to Rs 4.50 lakh, he said. It is Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.50 lakh in Delhi, he claimed. There is no regulation on school fees and some schools have their own fee structures, he alleged. DU to grant provisional admission to EWS students based on acknowledgement receipt

Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students can get provisional admission in Delhi University by using acknowledgement receipt from authorities if there is a delay in procuring category certificate, an official said on Tuesday. This decision was finalised at the meeting of the Standing Committee of Admissions on Monday, the official said. "In several places, including Delhi, there has been a delay by the authorities in issuing EWS certificates. Due to this, Delhi University decided that candidates can upload acknowledgement receipt at the time of admission. "They will be required to submit an undertaking which will state that they will submit the EWS certificate within 15 days of getting admission to the college," Professor Rasal Singh, a standing committee member, said. Odisha extends school summer vacation till June 25

Odisha government Tuesday announced extension of the summer vacation in schools till June 25 in view of the prevailing heatwave conditions across the state. This was announced by School and Mass Education department Secretary PK Mohapatra. "All schools including privately run schools will reopen on June 26," Mohapatra said. Most of the schools were scheduled to reopen after the summer vacation on June 19. Some of the schools had, however, reopened from Monday (June 17). In 2018, the summer vacation was extended till June 23 and re-extended further to June 25 due to scorching heat. While acute heat wave continues in western region of the state, the coastal districts are facing high humidity level. This apart, many schools in coastal region was yet to be restored after the cyclone Fani, sources said. However, there was respite from heat as only two places in the state recorded temperature above 40 degree Celsius on Tuesday. Sambalpur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.6 .

Piramal Foundation, Assam govt ink MoU to improve education

The Piramal Foundation has signed an MoU with the Assam government to improve education indicators identified by the NITI Aayog across five aspirational districts in the state, for a period of four years. The foundation will support the state government and district administrations in leadership and professional development of individuals through multiple channels of intervention, according to the MoU. The five districts are Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri and Goalpara. Emphasis will be on two indicators -- 'Learning Outcomes' and 'Transition Rate' -- a Piramal Foundation release said on Tuesday. "The focus in the coming year would be on improving school performance across districts. Head of DU's Law faculty resigns, cites 'non-cooperation' from varsity as reason

Two months before her tenure was supposed to end, head of DU's Faculty of Law Ved Kumari resigned from the post, citing "non-cooperation of the varsity authorities". Kumari had joined as Dean and Head, Faculty of Law from September 2, 2016 and her tenure was supposed to end this year on September 1. She said there had been "failure" in ensuring that justice was done to hardworking students who attend classes regularly. "Now students with as low as 31 per cent attendance are not only being permitted to take exam but are also being given marks for attendance by giving them additional attendance for tutorials at institutional-level without even holding the tutorial classes and maintaining fake records," she said in her resignation letter sent on June 14. In the letter addressed to the university's vice-chancellor, Kumari also said there was a failure to secure any action against the "whimsical, arrogant and oppressive behaviour" of a faculty member despite there being complaints against .

Union minister Sanjay Dhotre Tuesday called upon teachers to transform tribal students into responsible citizens through education. He said the students coming from tribal regions are hard working but they need a proper guidance in life. Four RBU dept heads quit over 'racist' remarks

Four departmental heads of the Rabindra Bharati University here have put in their papers over alleged racist remarks made against them by members of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), prompting the state education minister to intervene into the matter. The students' wing of the Mamata Banerjee-led party, however, denied the allegation. Slammed for removing SSC internal marks, Maha hikes FYJC seats

Under flak for scrapping internal assessment marks for class 10 students, which was said to be the main reason behind a dip in SSC pass percentage this year, the Maharashtra government Tuesday announced that it would augment the number of overall seats for class 11 admissions. The move will provide a level-playing field for the students of the state SSC board, and increase probability for them to secure admissions in their colleges of choice. The SSC students are battling higher cut-offs for admission in FYJC (first year junior College) as they are facing competition from the students of ISCE and CBSE boards whose scores included internal assessment marks. UP Cabinet gives nod to 6 proposals

Govt teachers to get salary only after getting 'attendance certificate' in J&K's Kishtwar

Authorities in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir have decided to release the salary of the teaching staff in government-run educational institutes only after submission of attendance certificates duly signed by parents of students and the local sarpanch. The order by District Development Commissioner Angrez Singh Rana is aimed to keep a close vigil on the functioning of educational institutes, officials said Tuesday. They said the order was issued following complaints that the teaching staff of several schools were not attending duties regularly. "The salary of the teaching staff of the educational institutions shall be drawn subject to the production of the attendance certificate duly signed by at least 10 parents (on rotational basis) of the students studying in that particular educational institution and duly counter signed by the sarpanch of the concerned panchayat while producing the bill to the concerned treasuries," the officials said quoting the order. NASA funds programme to produce videos to teach Hindi through Indian scientific innovations

A programme funded by NASA in the US has produced a series of videos about famous archaeological sites and institutions in India along with lesson plans in Hindi to teach the language internationally in the context of science and technology. The videos focus on scientific innovations at various sites like Amer Fort palace and Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, the rust-resistant Iron Pillar of Delhi, UNESCO Heritage site Qutub Minar, the Chand Bawri step well and headquarters of the Jaipur Foot, a prosthetic given free to impoverished amputees in 80 countries across the world. The NASA-funded programme STARTALK, which makes it a priority issue for national security to expand the teaching and learning of Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and other world languages, made a USD 90,000 grant to Ved Chaudhary, director of the project.
