England captain Jos Buttler has left the squad and is set to miss the third T20 International against Pakistan on Tuesday to be with his wife for the birth of their third child. If Buttler is absent for the match in Cardiff, vice-captain Moeen Ali will take the captaincy. England leads the four-game series 1-0 after Buttler made 84 in a 23-run win at Edgbaston on Saturday. The fourth T20I is at The Oval on Thursday. The series is preparation for the T20 World Cup, with England beginning its title defence against Scotland in Barbados on June 4. Ben Duckett is likely to replace Buttler at the top of the order at Sophia Gardens.
Former skipper Michael Vaughan feels England "missed the trick" by recalling its cricketers from the IPL to play a T20 series against Pakistan, saying it had denied them experiencing pressure-cooker situations of the playoffs, which could have helped them prepare better for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas. Top England players, including skipper Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Phil Salt (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Will Jacks (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) were among the players called back home by the England and Wales Cricket Board for a four-match T20I series against Pakistan, leading to severe criticism from several former Indian cricketers including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. In fact, it was skipper Buttler who had pushed for players to get back in the English camp from the IPL to prepare for the T20 World Cup with the series against Pakistan, director of cricket Rob Key had earlier revealed. "I'm all for international cricket, but now and again this tournament (IPL)

The England and Wales Cricket Board on Tuesday announced a three-Test tour to New Zealand starting at Christchurch on November 28. After the series opener at Hagley Oval, the tour will move to the North Island for tests in Wellington from December 6-10 and in Hamilton from December 14-18. The last time the Test teams met in February and March of last year, they split a two-match series after England was on the verge of a 2-0 victory when skipper Ben Stokes enforced the follow-on. New Zealand won by one run only the fourth team in history to win a Test after following on in the second Test after England won the first by 267 runs. The three matches at the end of this year form part of the World Test Championship, which New Zealand won in its inaugural edition before losing the title to Australia. India, which has won six of nine Tests in this edition, leads the WTC standings with Australia in second place and New Zealand in third. England is ninth ahead of home series against West
Former England pacer Stuart Board has backed talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes' decision to opt out of this year's T20 World Cup due to fitness reasons but expressed concerns about fast bowler Jofra Archer's never-ending injury woes. Supporting Stokes' pullout from the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, Board said the defending champions will miss his aura but have enough resources to replace him as a player. "Whatever Ben decides to do for the well-being of himself is the right decision. Ben Stokes has made some incredible decisions in his career that have paid off for him," Broad, a member of the Star Sports Incredible Star Cast, told PTI in an exclusive interaction at their studio here. "He wants to get back to (being) the all-rounder that he was and he feels like getting some workload through the knee in a controlled environment, without the help of a scale to pressurise the nature of a T20 World Cup, is the best choice," he said. While Archer has found it ...
Jofra Archer is once again cranking up "exceptional pace" following a series of injury setbacks since 2019 and is on England selectors' radar for the T20 World Cup this year. Archer's county side Sussex's coach Paul Farbrace said that the 29-year-old is bowling with the likes of England's Ollie Robinson and the West Indies' Jayden Seales in training and the plan is to make him ready for the showpiece event. "Last week in practice there was a spell where Oliver (Robinson) had bowled, Jayden bowled and then Jofra came into the middle and bowled -- and he came marching out and bowled exceptionally quick," Farbrace was quoted as saying by The Telegraph on Tuesday. Farbrace added he was mighty pleased to see Archer uprooting the stumps of Oli Carter a couple of times in the last few outings. "At the moment the plan is very clear from (James) Keysy (Sussex's bowling coach) that they're getting him ready for the T20 World Cup. All I can say is what I have seen, he came with us to India an
Recently retired elite panel umpire Marais Erasmus has admitted to making a 'massive' mistake in the 2019 ODI World Cup final that England won in a rather controversial fashion at the iconic Lord's. England won their maiden ODI World Cup title by edging New Zealand on the now-scrapped boundary countback rule after both teams were tied following a Super Over. However, the game could have ended in regulation time if on-field umpire Erasmus and Kumar Dharamsena did not award England six runs for an overthrow in the 50th over with the hosts needing nine runs from three balls. It was later realised that England should have been awarded only five runs as the batters had not crossed for the second run. The next morning (after the final) I opened my hotel room door on my way to breakfast and Kumar opened his door at the same time and he said, did you see we made a massive error?' That's when I got to know about it," Erasmus told 'The Telegraph'. "But in the moment on the field, we just sai
About 10 years after its last edition was played, "active conversations" are taking place between cricket boards of India, Australia and England to revive the Champions League, a club-based international T20 competition. The last edition of the CLT20 was held in India in 2014 with Chennai Super Kings winning the title after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final at Bengaluru, with the edition involving three teams from India, two each from Australia and South Africa and one team side from Pakistan, the West Indies and New Zealand. As many as six editions of the CLT20 were played between 2009-10 to 2014-15, with four of these being organised in India and two in South Africa. The tournament was won twice each by Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, while Australia's New South Wales and Sydney Sixes won it one time each. While the cricket calendar remains jam-packed, the biggest challenge would be to find a window for reviving such an event, said Cricket Victoria CEO Nick ...
