Threats to kin after my tweets on ban on Pak actors scared me: Anurag

Anurag Kashyap says he was "scared" when his family received threats for his tweets criticising the ban on Pakistani artistes from working in Bollywood in 2016. The filmmaker says he now just posts his opinion and does not read the responses to it. This way, he says, he has been able to increase his productivity. Kashyap had come out in support of his filmmaker friend Karan Johar, who faced protests during the release of "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" (2016), which featured Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in a pivotal but small role. In a series of tweets, Kashyap had asked why only Indian filmmakers should be targeted for casting Pakistani actors when Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Lahore. The "Mukkabaaz" director says after he posted the tweets, people started targeting his personal life. Netflix announces pull out from Cannes film festival

Streaming giant Netflix has decided to pull out of the Cannes Film Festival following a rule change. The move came after Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux had announced a ban on films from the main competition which do not have a proper theatrical release in France. The ban came in response to huge controversy that erupted last year, when two Netflix films -- "Okja" and "The Meyerowitz Stories" -- entered the competition for the Palme d'Or without being released in cinemas. In an interview with Variety, Netflix's content officer Ted Sarandos said the streaming giant will not be a part of the festival this year. "We want our films to be on fair ground with every other filmmaker. There's a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They've set the tone. I don't think it would be good for us to be there," Sarandos said. He also called the decision "completely contrary to the spirit of any film festival in the ...

SC rejects SGPC's plea for urgent hearing on 'Nanak Shah Fakir'

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give a date for an urgent hearing to a plea by Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) seeking a stay on the release of the Punjabi film, 'Nanak Shah Fakir'.SGPC, a statutory religious body, today mentioned before the apex court's three-judge bench that it has a genuine religious grievance against anybody who is playing the role of a Sikh Guru or anybody in the film. The court, however, refused to give an urgent hearing to the pleading of the SGPC.The top court made it clear that a film, which has been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), does not require prior approval of the SGPC for release in theaters and cinema halls across India.Produced by Harinder Sikka, 'Nanak Shah Fakir' is the first ever film about Guru Nanak Dev. Book on Gwalior gharana: Musical tales of another time

In melody-loving Gwalior, there was a time when hard-up artistes could "pawn" a raga to be redeemed by aficionados of Hindustani classical music, says a noted singer. If musicians could not pay for something in the late 19th and early 20th centuries , they could mortgage a raga, which could be retrieved by a patron who wished to hear it, classical vocalist Meeta Pandit of the Gwalior gharana recounted. "The artiste used to tell the music lover to first retrieve the raga, and only then would he be able to sing it," said Pandit, the sixth in the unbroken lineage of the gharana. The legend about the musical past of the erstwhile cultural capital of India figures in her book "India's Heritage of Gharana Music: Pandits of Gwalior", along with a host of anecdotes. The book is an outcome of an emotional journey that she undertook after her elder brother Tushar Pandit died in a road accident in 1994. He was then working on his PhD on the contribution of Gwalior Pandits to Hindustani ...
