Jiah Khan death case: Charges framed against Sooraj Pancholi

A sessions court here today framed charges against Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi for allegedly abetting actress Jiah Khan's suicide. Judge K D Shirbhate framed charges against the 27-year- old actor under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code, to which he pleaded not guilty. "Sooraj pleaded innocence and the examination of witnesses will start from February 14," his lawyer Prashant Patil said. According to the chargesheet, Khan, best known for her performance in film 'Nishabd' starring Amitabh Bachchan, was found hanging at her residence on June 3, 2013 by her mother Rabiya. She had left the house of Sooraj Pancholi, where she had been staying for the last two days, in the morning the same day, it said. According to the CBI, Pancholi had "hidden facts and fabricated information" during questioning. Sooraj Pancholi, the son of Bollywood couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, had refused to undergo polygraph or brain-mapping tests which the agency .

Telugu actor arrested for theft after wife lodges complaint

The Cyberabad Police today arrested Telugu actor Samrat Reddy on a complaint filed by his wife who accused him of theft and house trespass, police said. Reddy, who has acted in films like 'Panchakshari' and 'Kittu Unnadu Jagratha', and his wife were living separately, following some marital dispute, they said. The actor's wife lodged a complaint at the Madhapur police station on January 25, accusing her 28-year-old husband of committing theft of household articles and gold ornaments, besides damaging CCTV cameras and furniture at her house here, Inspector R Kalinga Rao said. "Some family dispute was going on between the couple and they were living separately here. Recently, in view of the Makar Sankranti festival, she went to her mother's house and after returning home she found the door lock broken," he said. Veteran actress files molestation case against bizman

A city-based veteran Bollywood actress has filed a molestation complaint against a local businessman who is known to her, police said today. A Juhu police station official said the actress (66) and the accused (38) are known to each other, but are not on talking terms of late following some dispute. He said the accused, also a resident of upscale Juhu, kept calling the actress and even used to stalk her even after she had asked him against doing so. The actress approached the police yesterday and lodged a complaint. Police have registered an FIR under sections 354 D (stalking), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and other relevant sections of the IPC against the businessman, the official said. No arrest has been made so far and further investigation is underway, he added.

Sam Raimi to direct 'Kingkiller Chronicle'

Sam Raimi is in talks with Lionsgate to direct the upcoming adaptation of Pat Rothfuss' New York Times bestseller "The Kingkiller Chronicle". In 2016, Lionsgate tapped "Hamilton" star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to serve as creative producer and musical mastermind of the feature film and TV series adaptations of "The Kingkiller Chronicle," along with Rothfuss. The film's script is being penned by Lindsey Beer. The series is centered on the wizard Kvothe, who survives a tragic childhood to become a notorious household name.

Elisabeth Moss to star as a punk rocker in 'Her Smell'

Actor Elisabeth Moss is set to produce and star in Bow and Arrow Entertainment's "Her Smell". Moss will play a punk rocker in the film to be directed by Alex Ross Perry, reported Variety. The actor will star as Becky Something, a maniacally destructive rock star who pushes her relationships with bandmates, family, and followers to the limit as she wages a years-long war against sobriety while attempting to re-engage the creativity that had once led her band to massive crossover success. Production will begin shortly after Moss wraps her work on the second season of "The Handmaid's Tale," which is currently filming. Moss won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Offred in the Hulu series.

Singer Justin Timberlake is all set to perform at the BRIT Awards this year. The 36-year-old singer will be on the BRITs stage a couple of weeks after headlining the Super Bowl half-time show in the US. "Excited to be performing #Brits! ACJ invites nomination for investigative journalism award

City-based Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) today invited nominations for its 2017 investigative journalism award. "The award for Print + Digital (newspapers, magazines, websites and other digital platforms) will comprise a trophy, citation and a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000/-," the ACJ said. ACJ, with the support of Media Development Foundation, has instituted the award to recognise and encourage the best works of investigative journalism produced for Indian readers, viewers and audiences in order to promote journalism in public interest, it said. Journalists and news organisations are invited to send in entries for consideration by the award committee and jury by March 2, 2018, it said in a release.
