Mangaluru to host lit festival on "Idea of Bharat" from Nov 3

A literary festival on the'Idea of Bharat, christened 'Mangaluru Lit Fest 2018', will be organised in the city from November 3 to 6. The festival is an attempt to showcase the ancient Indian wisdom of peace, brotherhood and universal well-being through intellectual discourse by the finest literary minds from across the country, the convenor of the event Sriraj Gudi told reporters here Tuesday. The festival intends to provide a platform for intellectual deliberations for monologues, panel discussions, conversations, book reviews, symposiums and book exhibition on'The Idea of Bharat,' Gudi said. Saraswati Samman awardee Padmasree S L Byrappa willbe felicitated with the lifetime achievement award during the festival for his immense contribution towards literature, he said. Was offered 'Black Widow' film by Marvel Studios, says Lucrecia Martel

Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel on Tuesday revealed that Marvel Studios had invited her for a meeting regarding "Black Widow" solo film as they were looking for a female director who could "mainly concentrate on Scarlett Johansson's character". The director, best known for her films such as "The Holy Girl" and "The Headless Woman", said several studios are trying to involve more female filmmakers today. "I received an e-mail from Marvel for a meeting. Because they were looking for directors for 'Black Widow'. So I went to the reunion. I actually signed this thing where I can't talk about that reunion. Marvel and other such production houses are trying to involve more female filmmakers," Martel said. Rajiv Malhotra, Swapan Dasgupta appointed as JNU honorary professors

Hindutva ideologue Rajiv Malhotra and BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta have been appointed as honorary professors at the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for Media Studies (CMS). Tagging a link of the CMS' faculty page, Malhotra tweeted, "As a visiting prof at JNU, I will deliver my first lecture on 2nd Nov afternoon. I will probably discuss my project on SANSKRIT NON-TRANSLATABLES. Next time I can proceed to other topics." Malhotra, apart from being a Hindutva activist and an author, is a physicist and computer scientist by training. His books include "Indra's Net: Defending Hinduism's Philosophical Unity", "Battle for Sanskrit" and "Academic Hindophobia". Marathi music composer Yeshwant Deo dies

Veteran Marathi musician Yeshwant Deo, who had composed music for many films including Shabana Azmi-starrer "Saaz", passed away on Tuesday after suffering from a brief illness. He was 91. Deo breathed his last at Sushrusha Hospital in Dadar around 1.30 AM. "He was admitted there 20 days ago after he contracted chikungunya. He was later diagnosed with pneumonia which ultimately led to kidney dysfunction and other complications," a family source told PTI. His last rites will be performed at the Dadar Crematorium Tuesday. Born on November 1, 1926, Deo was a revered figure in the Marathi music circle and industry where he composed music for more than 40 Marathi films and plays. He worked in All India Radio as a sitar player. A recipient of the Lata Mangeshkar award, He was also knonw for his composition in Bhav Geet. He won several awards such as Maharashtra state award for music direction for the play Amrapali (1974). He also published books on devotional music.

Director-producer Ava DuVernay has collaborated with Netflix for a multi-episode documentary covering the life of singer-songwriter Prince. The project has the full cooperation of the late artiste's estate and will give DuVernay access to interviews archival footage, photographs and other material, said Variety. DuVernay, best known for her work on "Selma", "Queen Sugar" and "A Wrinkle in Time", said she is approaching the project "with love". "Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses.
