USIBC recommends PLI for media, entertainment industry in upcoming Budget

A top India-centric American trade body on Sunday recommended that the Indian government should introduce production-linked incentives for the media and entertainment industry in the upcoming Budget. The trade body also called for steps to level the playing field between Indian and foreign companies. Ahead of the annual Budget presentation by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23, the US India Business Council (USIBC) pitched for liberalising the satellite communications industry and taking measures to create a level playing field for Indian and foreign financial services firms and reduce friction in the flow of capital between the two countries. Proposing eliminating value restrictions on courier exports exceeding Rs 5 lakh to streamline processes and foster greater efficiency, USIBC, in its memorandum to the Union Finance Ministry, suggested removing restrictions on perishable goods shipped via courier to ensure swift clearance, supporting perishable trade dynamics

Propelled by the popularity of titles such as Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, The Great Indian Kapil Show and Amar Singh Chamkila, India has emerged as the third country in revenue per cent growth for streaming service Netflix in its second quarter. The streamer released its second quarter earnings for 2024 on Thursday and Indian content seems to have made significant strides this year alongside popular international shows such as Bridgerton 3, Baby Reindeer, Korean drama Queen of Tears and films such as Hit Man and Under Paris. India and the UK have had especially strong slates this year, according to the streamer. In Q2, India was the second and third country in terms of paid net adds and revenue per cent growth, respectively due to the success of titles like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which had 15 million views to become the streamer's biggest Indian drama series ever. Bob Newhart, the deadpan accountant-turned-comedian who became one of the most popular TV stars of his time after striking gold with a classic comedy album, has died at 94. Jerry Digney, Newhart's publicist, says the actor died Thursday in Los Angeles after a series of short illnesses. Newhart, best remembered now as the star of two hit television shows of the 1970s and 1980s that bore his name, launched his career as a standup comic in the late 1950s. He gained nationwide fame when his routine was captured on vinyl in 1960 as "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart," which went on to win a Grammy Award as album of the year.
