India land of storytellers, must become a global content hub: Anurag Thakur

India is the land of storytellers and should emerge as the content hub of the world, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Thursday as Rajya Sabha passed the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill aimed at curbing piracy and simplifying licensing procedures. The government is soon going to open institutes for the animation, visual effects, gaming and comics (AVGC) sector to provide skilled manpower to the fast-growing field, Thakur said while replying to a debate on the bill, which seeks to amend the Cinematograph Act of 1952. The bill was passed by a voice vote after a brief discussion. The opposition staged a walkout during the introduction of the bill over its demand for a discussion on the situation in ethnic strife-torn Manipur. The bill will now go to Lok Sabha for its nod. The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill-2023 aims to curb piracy to help the film industry and simplify licensing procedures. The government has proposed a maximum three-year jail term and

Amazon miniTV to soon launch first set of Hindi dubbed International shows

Amazon miniTV on Wednesday announced the launch of 'miniTV Imported', the streaming service's new category that will provide International content dubbed in Hindi. The free streaming service, available on Amazon's shopping app, will stream top global shows every month across multiple genres, ranging from Korean, Turkish, Mandarin and Spanish, a press release stated. Amazon miniTV will unveil its first set of Hindi dubbed shows, which include titles such as "Cheer Up", "Heart Surgeons" and "Doctor Detective", from July 7. "In recent times, the viewing preferences of digital video consumers in India have changed significantly. Veteran actor Sulochana Latkar dies at 94 due to prolonged illness

Noted actor Sulochana Latkar died on Sunday due to prolonged illness at a hospital here, her grandson-in-law Parag Ajgavkar confirmed. She was 94. Latkar, a well-known actor of Marathi and Hindi cinema, started her career in 1940s and went on to feature in over 250 films. The actor was admitted to Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar on May 8. "She passed away at around 6.30 pm at the hospital due to prolonged illness. She had a respiratory tract infection for which she was admitted on May 8," Parag told PTI. Some of Latkar's notable films are "Sasurvas", "Vahinichya Bangdya", and "Dhakti Jau" in Marathi and "Aaye Din Bahar Ke", "Gora Aur Kala", "Devar", "Talaash", and "Azaad", in Hindi. In Bollywood, the actor largely played on-screen mother to lead stars of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s including Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan. She featured in Hindi blockbuster hits such as "Heera", "Reshma Aur Shera", "Jaani Dushman", "Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai", .
