Writer Amitav Ghosh should consider using his pen to warn Indians about the "inflammability of hatred among communities" in the country, the way he did with global warming in his 2018 book "The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable", said former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Gandhi, who presented the 54th Jnanpith award to the eminent novelist at the India Habitat Centre here on Wednesday, urged Ghosh to "save the India of Gautam Buddha and Vardhaman Mahavir from hate". Ghosh is the first English author to win the award. The work on the Chandrawal Phase II water treatment plant (WTP), the first to be set up in the national capital after a gap of 13 years, will begin this month, according to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The plant will augment the DJB's water supply by 106 million gallons of water per day. "We did not set up the plant earlier because we did not have water for it. It's pointless to have a plant when you do not have raw water. Now, water is available with us. The work is likely to start on June 24 or 25," DJB Vice-Chairman Dinesh Mohaniya said. The new WTP will be constructed at a cost of Rs 598 crores in three years. Currently, the utility is supplying 900 MGD of drinking water to the city on an average against the demand for 1,120 MGD. Representations of the Earth's water cycle used in textbooks throughout the world need to be updated, say scientists who have drawn up a new set of diagrams to include effects of human interference. Leaving humans out of the picture contributes to a basic lack of awareness of how humans relate to water on Earth -- and a false sense of security about future availability of this essential and scarce resource, according to the study published in the journal Nature Geoscience. The team from the University of Birmingham in the UK, Brigham Young University and Michigan State University in the US has drawn up a new set of diagrams to promote better understanding of how our water cycle works in the 21st century. These new diagrams show human interference in nearly all parts of the cycle. In a sample of more than 450 water cycle diagrams in textbooks, scientific literature and online, 85 per cent showed no human interaction at all with the water cycle, and only two per cent of the images made .

An unprecedented disease outbreak has pushed the critically endangered kakapo, the world's fattest parrot, closer to extinction, New Zealand scientists said Thursday. One of the last kakapo populations on remote Codfish Island has been hit with a fungal respiratory disease called aspergillosis, the Department of Conservation (DOC) said. It said 36 of the parrots were receiving treatment and seven had died, including two adults -- a huge loss for a species which has less than 150 fully grown birds left. "Aspergillosis is having a devastating impact on kakapo," the DOC said in a statement Thursday. The setback comes just weeks after scientists hailed a bumper breeding season for the flightless, nocturnal bird, which was once thought to be extinct. An intense, decades-long conservation effort has seen kakapo numbers slowly rise from a low of about 50 in 1990, and earlier this year there was hope the species was turning the corner. The breeding programme resulted in 249 eggs laid, ...
The Maharashtra government has decided to stop diversion of water from a dam to Pune's Baramati area, the bastion of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, and move the supply to some of the state's scarcity-hit areas, an official said Thursday. The decision of the BJP-led state government is being seen in political circles as a jolt to Pawar, who won several times from the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency, which is now held by his daughter Supriya Sule. Till now, some water from the Nira Deoghar dam in Pune was being diverted to Baramati and Indapur (a part of Baramati Lok Sabha constituency). During the recent Lok Sabha poll campaign, BJP leader Ranjit Naik-Nimbalkar raised the issue of distribution of "additional" water to Baramati. Naik-Nimbalkar, who switched over from the Congress and won the Lok Sabha election from Madha seat in Solapur district on BJP's ticket, claimed that Baramati and Indapur were outside the Nira Deoghar dam's "command area". Due to diversion of water to ...
