Crops on 100,000 hectares damaged by untimely rains in Maha: CM Shinde

Nearly 1 lakh hectares of land under cultivation in different parts of Maharashtra was adversely affected due to unseasonal rains over the last three to four days, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said, citing preliminary assessment. Two persons have died in rain-related incidents in Nashik district in north Maharashtra, a senior official said. The CM said affected farmers will get compensation for crop losses caused by unseasonal rains. "Authorities have been directed to conduct 'panchnama' (survey) of the damaged crops and affected farmers should be paid adequate compensation," Shinde said while speaking to reporters in his political turf of Thane on Monday. He said preliminary information suggests that nearly 1 lakh hectares of land under cultivation in Marathwada, Vidarbha and north Maharashtra regions was affected due to untimely showers. Farmers who had gathered at Mohali and Panchkula along Chandigarh's borders on Tuesday ended their three-day protest after their meetings with Punjab and Haryana governors, but warned the Centre of a "bigger agitation" if it does not show "seriousness" towards their pending demands. 1,555 farmers died by suicide till July in Maharashtra, claims Wadettiwar

A total of 1,555 farmers took their lives till July 31 this year in Maharashtra where the threat of drought looms large, claimed Leader of Opposition in assembly Vijay Wadettiwar on Thursday, wondering if the government was aware of the severity of the situation. He said 13 districts of the state have received below-average rainfall in the last one and a half months. The Congress leader claimed that several reports have stated that farmer suicides in the state are on the rise because of the drought-like conditions and apathy of the Eknath Shinde government. Taking to X, the Congress leader said the Amravati division reported the highest number of farmer suicides at 637 in the first seven months of this year. While 183 farmers took their own lives in Amravati district between January and July 31, the figure is 173 in Buldhana, 149 in Yavatmal, 94 in Akola and 38 in Washim, he said. Ten percent of the total compensation for crop damage will now go the labourers employed by farmers, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Friday after a Cabinet meeting in Ludhiana. He said the decision was taken as when crop gets damaged due to heavy rains or hailstorms, farm labourers also lose work and income. Explaining how the scheme will be implemented, he said the state government will soon start registering labourers as very few of them are registered and they cannot avail the benefits of schemes of state and central governments. Farmers in Punjab squatted on railway tracks at many places in the state as part of their four-hour 'rail roko' agitation against the value cut announced by the Centre on shrivelled and broken wheat grains due to untimely rains. The protest impacted the movement of many trains and caused inconvenience to passengers. Several farmer bodies including Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and BKU (Lakhowal) had announced that they would block rail tracks from 12 noon to 4 pm. SKM to hold demonstration in Delhi in Mar demanding legal guarantee for MSP

Maharashtra: 1,023 farmers ended lives in Marathwada in 2022; 887 in 2021

The Marathwada region of Maharashtra reported 1,023 farmer suicides in 2022, up from 887 in the previous year, an official from the divisional commissioner's office said. The region comprising Jalna, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad and Beed districts had recorded one farmer suicide in 2001. So far, 10,431 growers have ended their lives in the region's eight districts since 2001, show figures from the divisional commissionerate. Between 2001 and 2010, the maximum 379 farmer suicides were reported in 2006. In the 2011-2020 decade, the highest number of farmer suicides at 1,133 was reported in 2015, the data showed. Out of the 10,431 farmers who ended their lives since 2001, 7,605 had received aid as per the government norms, an official said. Over the past few years, the region has seen drought-like conditions in some years and excess rain in others, which has compounded the difficulties of crop growers, according to activists and officials. Punjab farmer leaders submit memorandum to Governor

Several farmer leaders of Punjab on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, seeking implementation of their various demands including legally guaranteed minimum support price and withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill. On the call of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), representatives of 33 farmer bodies in the state also took out a march to mark the second anniversary of their agitation against the now-repealed three farm laws.
