Wildfires ravage southern S Korea, killing 18, forcing 27,000 to evacuate

At least 16 people died and another 19 were injured as wildfires ravaged South Korea's southern regions amid dry weather and strong winds, government officials said on Wednesday. Officials in Andong city and other southeastern cities and towns ordered residents to evacuate on Tuesday as firefighters struggled to contain multiple blazes fuelled by dry winds, which burned more than 43,000 acres of land and destroyed hundreds of structures, including a 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple. More than 5,500 people were forced to evacuate from their homes in Andong, the neighbouring counties of Uiseong and Sancheong, and the city of Ulsan, where the fires were the largest, according to South Korea's Ministry of Interior and Safety. South Korean officials earlier on Tuesday said that firefighters had extinguished most of the flames from the largest wildfires in those areas, but the ongoing dry and windy weather caused setbacks and allowed the blazes to spread again. Nearly 9,000 firefighters, .

Ex-LA fire chief fails to get job back after ouster over deadly wildfire

The former Los Angeles fire chief who was ousted by Mayor Karen Bass after the most destructive wildfire in city history failed to win back her job Tuesday, falling short with her argument that her dismissal was based on false accusations about her conduct and decision-making. Former Chief Kristen Crowley appealed to the City Council to reverse Bass' decision, which followed finger-pointing between Crowley and City Hall over the wildfire devastation and the fire department's funding. The council voted 13-2 to shelve the proposal in what amounted to a show of support for Bass, a first-term Democrat who has been criticized for being in Africa as part of a presidential delegation on the day the fires started, even though weather reports had warned of dangerous wind and wildfire conditions in the days before she left. The rift between the mayor and the chief created a sensitive political situation for Bass who has been trying to show a unified front as the city confronts the massive job

At least seven killed, 19 injured in air ambulance crash in Philadelphia

A medical transport jet crashed in Philadelphia on Friday about 30 seconds after taking off, setting homes ablaze, strewing debris and rattling residents after the second air disaster in as many days. Two people were on board, the Federal Aviation Administration said. A doorbell camera captured footage of the plane falling from the sky in a streak of white and exploding in a fireball as it hit the ground in a residential neighborhood near a shopping mall and major roadway. All we heard was a loud roar and didn't know where it was coming from. We just turned around and saw the big plume, said Jim Quinn, the owner of the doorbell camera. The crash happened less than 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which primarily serves business jets and charter flights. The plane, a Learjet 55, quickly disappeared from radar after taking off from the airport at 6:06 pm and climbing to an altitude of 1,600 feet (487 meters). It was en route to Springfield, Missouri, and
