Feyenoord fans banned from Champions League match in Lille due to violence

Feyenoord supporters have been banned by French authorities from traveling to Lille for next week's final Champions League group game between the two clubs. In an order published Wednesday, France's interior ministry said there was a real and serious risk of confrontation between fans of the two teams. Lille hosts Feyenoord on Jan. 29 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. The French authorities said Feyenoord's travels are often marred by public order disturbances due to the violent behavior of certain supporters or individuals claiming to be supporters of this team, and they cited several examples of fan violence. Justifying its decision, the ministry added that 3,600 fans 500 of whom were identified as being dangerous had planned to travel to Lille, although only 2,600 seats had been allocated to the Dutch club. Of the 1,000 supporters who have nevertheless planned to travel without a stadium admission ticket, it is feared that some will try to force their way into the stadium, it ...

Enrique faces Guardiola challenge as PSG meets Man City in UCL clash

Luis Enrique credits Pep Guardiola with inventing arguably the perfect model of attacking soccer. He must now outwit him when Paris Saint-Germain faces Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, in a match both teams must win to avoid the prospect of early elimination in the new-look format. It's a special game. Not just for the two teams but because I will come across a friend who I shared many great moments with as a player and a person, Enrique said on Tuesday through a translator. What brings us closer is our vision of football: To try and be better than the opponent on the ball, to constantly press the opponent. We can fine-tune our game but we have a similar way of seeing things. Guardiola rose to fame as a coach during a glory era for Barcelona, winning the Champions League twice and multiple other trophies. Guardiola's sides hypnotized opponents with a pulsating brand of attacking soccer led by Lionel Messi that was the envy of Europe. Guardiola then turned City

Serie A: Dumfries shines vs Empoli as Inter closes the gap with Napoli

Inter Milan's goals are coming from an unusual source. Defender Denzel Dumfries was again on target on Sunday as Inter beat lowly Empoli 3-1 to keep pace with Serie A leader Napoli. Inter captain Lautaro Martnez netted the opener to help the Nerazzurri move to within three points of Napoli, which won 3-2 at third-placed Atalanta on Saturday. Inter has a match in hand. Inter found it hard to get past a resolute Empoli defense but Lautaro broke the deadlock in stunning fashion 10 minutes into the second half when he curled a powerful shot into the top right corner from 20 yards (metres). Dumfries headed in Inter's second in the 79th for his fourth goal in five matches. Sebastiano Esposito held up his hands in apology after pulling one back for Empoli four minutes later. The 22-year-old who has been in prolific form with 10 goals this season is on loan at Empoli from Inter. Marcus Thuram sealed the result with one minute remaining. Empoli remained a point above the drop zone. La

Ligue 1: Marseille draws with Strasbourg; Saint-Etienne, Nantes flounder

Second-placed Marseille lost further ground on leader Paris Saint-Germain by drawing 1-1 with Strasbourg in the French league. Facing a well-organised and lively visiting side on Sunday, Marseille struggled to develop its attacking moves in the first half and relied on a penalty converted by Mason Greenwood after the interval to secure a point. Marseille has a five-point lead over third-place Lille in the race for Champions League spots. It's now lagging nine points behind PSG, which won 2-1 at Lens on Saturday ahead of a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City on Wednesday. Emanuel Emegha made the most of Marseille's passivity to put the visitors in front in the 23rd minute. The Dutch forward was set up by the unmarked Andrey Santos in the back of the high defensive line and rushed toward goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, finishing off the move with a chipped finish. Strasbourg's intense press posed many problems for the hosts. Marseille played better in the second half an

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia completed his expected move from Napoli to Paris Saint-Germain when he signed a deal until 2029 with the record 12-time French champion. French media earlier reported the 23-year-old Georgia forward was in Paris to have his medical check, and PSG confirmed the transfer in a statement late Friday. It's a dream to be here. FA Cup Round-up: Man United beat Arsenal on penalties; Spurs avoid scare

Tottenham endured the humiliation of being taken to extra time by Tamworth, an opponent nearly 100 places lower in English soccer's pyramid, before winning 3-0 and avoiding one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history. Defending champion Manchester United also advanced from the third round by beating Arsenal 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Joshua Zirkzee converted the clinching penalty for United, which played from the 61st minute with 10 men following Diogo Dalot's sending-off. Four days after beating Premier League leader Liverpool 1-0 in the English League Cup semifinals, Tottenham's team of established internationals toiled against a group of part-time soccer players whose main jobs included bricklaying, selling zippers and being a financial advisor. A massive surprise was on when fifth-tier Tamworth forced extra time with the score 0-0, only for the hosts to concede an own-goal in the 101st minute and then strikes by Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson to disappoint

Transfer news: Reported Man City target Marmoush scores again for Frankfurt

Reported Manchester City target Omar Marmoush boosted his transfer value with another goal for Eintracht Frankfurt to beat St. Pauli 1-0 in the Bundesliga. The Egypt forward grabbed his 14th league goal in the 32nd minute, taking one touch and another to send the ball inside the far post from a difficult angle. Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krsche acknowledged before the match that a club has expressed interest in the player, though he didn't want to confirm it was Man City. The English champion has been struggling of late under Pep Guardiola. Sky reported that Frankfurt was demanding an 80 million euros ($82 million) fee for Marmoush, but Krsche also declined to confirm that. It doesn't make any sense to talk about prices, Krsche said. Basically, we've said our goal is to keep this team together. Of course, we also said if there are exceptional circumstances, we'd have to think about giving away top performers. We're not there yet. It would be the second big transfer coup fo
