G20 member countries, including India and the US, are holding consultations to arrive at a common framework to define startups with a view to promoting the growth of new ventures, a senior official said. This issue among others would come up for discussion during the Startup20 Engagement Group's, under India's G20 presidency, third meeting on June 3-4 in Goa. A common framework would help investors and other stakeholders of the startup ecosystem in the G20 member countries. The need for making a social protection system an effective and preferred instrument for disaster risk financing was discussed at an event convened here by the G20 Disaster Risk Resilience Working Group and UNICEF on Wednesday, an official statement said. The discussions also emphasised the need for new-age social protection systems that invest in local risk resilience to mitigate the impact of disasters, it said. The meeting, which began on Wednesday and will go on till May 25, is being attended by delegates from the G20 countries, International Finance Institutions, United Nations agencies, civil society, private sector and community members. The G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) meeting began on Tuesday, with the delegates visiting the Emergency Operations Centre at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters. The delegates to the three-day meeting appreciated BMC's preparedness to handle various disasters and lauded the prevention and mitigation measures of the civic body, an official release said. They also appreciated the magnificent and spectacular architecture of the 128-year-old BMC headquarters. The BMC Disaster Management Department is preparing a multi hazard vulnerability and risk assessment plan and is also in the process of developing various predictive/early warning system modules of various hazards for early action.

Evictions and demolitions have intensified in Delhi and other cities hosting G20-related events rendering several people homeless, activists have alleged. At a public hearing here on Monday, civil society and community members shared accounts of the evictions and anti-encroachment drives. The hearing was organised by Concerned Citizens, a collective of organisations from varied fields. The activists claimed as Delhi buckles up to host eight G20 events, including the meeting of heads of governments and states in September, more people have started getting eviction notices amid a series of anti-encroachment drives by different authorities. Pruthviraj from Land Conflict Watch said, India got the G20 presidency in November and people in Delhi suddenly started getting notices. Three-day meeting of the Trade and Investment Working Group (TIWG) under India's G20 Presidency will commence on Tuesday in Bengaluru, the commerce ministry said on Monday. About 75 delegates from G20 countries, invitee countries, and regional and international organizations will participate in deliberations on finding agreed solutions on issues related to international trade and investment, it said. India assumed the presidency of G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to November 31, 2023. The G20 Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 9-10. G20 meetings are being held across different cities, covering all 28 states and eight Union Territories of India. The meeting in Bengaluru will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash.
