Haryana 2024: Election hustle, farmers' protests bookend sporting glory

For a state that witnessed two elections of great significance this year and accounted for more than 20 per cent of athletes in India's Paris Olympics contingent, it is only fitting that the year's top newsmakers came from two fields: politics and sports. Add to the mix, the issues of farmers and farming -- farmers' protest remained a constant underrunning theme in the state's sociopolitical discourse through the year -- and Haryana's 2024 round-up is almost complete. As Haryana seemed to be settling into the regular humdrum of daily politics after high-pitched election season came the unsettling news of the passing of its five-time chief minister and political stalwart Om Prakash Chautala. He died on December 20 at the age of 89. The state entered 2024 with a great deal to look forward to for everybody: a BJP looking to repeat the 2019 feat of winning all 10 LS seats and also retaining power in assembly, a Congress emboldened by projections it would wrest back a large number of ...

OP Chautala: Stalwart Jat leader, 5-time CM with his share of controversies

Om Prakash Chautala was a tall figure in Indian politics and a prominent leader of the Jat community, but his career was marked with controversies and jail term. Born on January 1, 1935, Chautala, a five-time Haryana chief minister, passed away in Gurugram on Friday at the age of 89. Born into an influential political family, Chautala was the eldest son of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal and headed the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), a party founded by his father. Chautala's father was a tall figure in Indian politics. Devi Lal had also served as chief minister of Haryana and was considered a messiah of farmers. Though Chautala could never match the stature his father enjoyed, he was known for his sharp political acumen and wit despite not being well-educated. Chautala served as chief minister of the state for five terms, though it was between 1999 and 2005 that he enjoyed a full term. In between, right from 1989 to July 1999, he served intermittent terms in office. When De

Congress will be finished if it continues spreading lies, says Haryana CM

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Thursday said the Congress will be completely finished by 2029 if it continues "spreading lies". "If the Congress continues spreading lies, by 2029, it will be completely finished," Saini said in a scathing attack on the Congress while addressing a public meeting in Pundri in Kaithal district. He alleged the Congress lacks a clear policy, direction, and leadership, and has resorted to "lies and deception" to secure votes. Referring to the Lok Sabha elections, the chief minister recalled that Congress leaders started saying that if Narendra Modi were to become prime minister for a third term, the Constitution would be at risk. He said, however, that there is no threat to the Constitution, and if anyone is in danger, it is the Congress party itself. Addressing a 'Dhanayad rally' in the Pundri Assembly constituency, Saini highlighted that each region and town in Haryana has its own distinct food culture, citing Pundri's famous "Firni" and Goha

Pandher urges SKM to unite with farmers protesting on Punjab-Haryana border

Punjab farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher Sunday said he has written to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to join hands with the farmers protesting at Punjab-Haryana border points over their various demands, including a legal guarantee on the MSP for crops. His statement came days after SKM leader Rakesh Tikait called for unity of farmers for a "joint fight" to press the Centre to accept their demands. Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are spearheading the 'Delhi Chalo march' and have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. A "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers made two attempts to enter Delhi on foot on December 6 and December 8. They were not allowed to proceed by security personnel in Haryana. However, the SKM, which had spearheaded the 2020 farmers' stir against the now-repealed farm laws, was not part of the 'Delhi
