Dietary changes help reduce inflammatory bowel disease in mice, claims study

A recent study conducted on mice has found that dietary modification helps in treating Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).University of Southern California researchers published a paper in the Cell Reports journal proving that changing the diet to a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) where the mice were only fed plant-based foods over a period of several days to trick the body into entering a period of fasting which in turn changed the gut microbiota that reduced the IBD pathology.FMD has previously shown a reduction of the symptoms of several chronic illnesses, like multiple sclerosis and diabetes.During the study, researchers induced IBD symptoms and pathology in mice by feeding them dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) which causes gut inflammation in mice. The mice after this received multiple FMD cycles involving vegan food. Another group of mice were infected by DSS but underwent water only fasting. Mice that received FMD showed reduced symptoms, increased stem cell numbers and reversed ...

New approach may help fight TB effectively: Study

Structures released by tuberculosis-infected cells may be used in tandem with antibiotics to boost the body's immune system, helping fight off the disease, according to a study. The study, published in the journal EMBO Reports, found that the structures, called extracellular vesicles (EVs), contain Mycobacterium tuberculosis RNA -- a molecule essential in various biological roles -- and transfer it to other cells. This starts a built-in weapon system against the disease in the form of an immune response, said researchers from the University of Notre Dame in the US. Though extracellular vesicles containing RNA from viruses had been discovered years ago, the researchers recently discovered RNA from bacteria -- Mycobacterium tuberculosis -- in EVs. This discovery led to experiments to determine how the bacteria's RNA was affecting the "target" cell, including cells infected by M tuberculosis. A key discovery hinges on macrophages, which are cells of the immune system, researchers ...

Delhi woman undergoes third kidney transplant

A 45-year-old woman from Delhi underwent a record third kidney transplant at a hospital here, proving true the adage 'No matter how hard life is, don't lose hope'. Ekta Kalra has undergone three kidney transplants since 2001, the latest being in November 2018. According to doctors performing multiple transplants in a patient, the task is very challenging as with every transplant, the surgery gets more and more dangerous as the potential for complications increases. It was Kalra's third transplant and the patient was much older, making the potential for complications far more, Sandeep Guleria, senior consultant, General Surgery, GI Surgery and transplantation at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said. In the case of Kalra, it was her husband who donated his kidney to save her life this time. Even though they were ABO incompatible, which means that their blood group did not match, the doctors took the challenge and performed the highly complicated transplant successfully. A routine ...

Mystery infections traced to blood-shedding religious ritual

Add self-flagellation to the list of ways to get a dangerous viral blood infection. Researchers said Wednesday that they were initially puzzled how 10 British men had become infected with a little-known virus, because the men hadn't taken risks usually associated with the infection. But then investigators learned they had participated in blood-shedding religious rituals cutting or whipping themselves in Iraq, Pakistan, India and the United Kingdom. "There have been suggestions that you might spread infections through this route, but it has never been described before" in a published medical study, said Dr. Divya Dhasmana of St. Mary's Hospital in London. She is one of the authors of the study released Wednesday in a journal published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The men were infected with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. Most people infected with the virus never develop symptoms, but some develop terrible illnesses, like a deadly blood cancer or a ...

Taking too much vitamin D may cloud its benefits

While vitamin D comes with a lot of benefits, one should know the right amount of intake of vitamin D. According to a recent study, obese older women, who take more than three times the recommended daily dose of vitamin D showed improvements in memory and learning but also had slower reaction times. The researchers hypothesized that slower reaction times may increase the risk of falling among older people. The results of the study were published in 'Journals of GerontologyThe researchers found that memory and learning improved in the group that took 2,000 IU per day, but not in the group that took the higher dosage. Meanwhile, the women's reaction time showed a trend to be slower at 2,000 IU daily and was significantly slower at the higher dosage. "The slower reaction time may have other negative outcomes such as potentially increasing the risk of falling and fractures," said senior study author Sue Shapses."This is possible since other researchers have found that vitamin D ...

Key to growing human blood vessels found

Researchers have discovered an ingredient vital for proper blood vessel formation that may help develop better treatments for a host of serious conditions ranging from diabetes to heart attacks and strokes. Scientists seeking to grow blood vessels have focused almost exclusively on growing only the inner layer of blood vessels, which are made up of endothelial cells. The hope was that these endothelial cells would then recruit any other cell types needed to form a complete, functional blood vessel, according to the study published in the journal Nature Communications. Researchers led by the University of Virginia School of Medicine in the US determined that those vessels can develop properly only if they are grown in conjunction with another cell type, known as perivascular cells, including smooth muscle cells and pericytes. The researchers liken these perivascular cells to the outer support layers of a rubber hose or on automobile tires, without which they burst or leak. "Most of the

USFDA issues import alert on Hospira's Chennai plant

The USFDA has imposed Import Alert on the drugs being manufactured at a facility owned by Hospira Healthcare India, a Pfizer company, in Tamil Nadu after the regulator found lapses with regard to good manufacturing practice (CGMP) regulations during an inspection. "FDA placed your firm on Import Alert 66-40 on August 1, 2018. Until you correct all violations completely and we confirm your compliance with CGMP, FDA may withhold approval of any new applications or supplements listing your firm as a drug manufacturer," FDA said in a letter to the drug maker. The US Food and Drug Aadministration (USFDA) conducted inspection from March 27 to April 3, 2018. "The critical data integrity breaches identified in our inspection also raise serious concerns regarding the validity of all results reported by your quality control laboratory. We acknowledge your decision during the inspection to suspend release of drug products until the data integrity issues are thoroughly ...

Soon, nano-bots may help diagnose, treat cancer

Scientists have designed a nanorobotics system that may be used to study the properties of cancer, and help improve diagnosis and treatment of the deadly disease. The nano-bot, described in the journal Science Robotics, is a set of magnetic 'tweezers' that can position a nano-scale bead inside a human cell in three dimensions with unprecedented precision. "Optical tweezers -- using lasers to probe cells -- is a popular approach," said Xian Wang, a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto in Canada. The technology was honoured with 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics, but Wang said the force that it can generate is not large enough for mechanical manipulation and measurement he wanted to do. The system Wang designed uses six magnetic coils placed in different planes around a microscope coverslip seeded with live cancer cells. A magnetic iron bead about 700 nanometres in diameter -- about 100 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair -- is placed on the coverslip, where the cancer ...
