J-K approves state healthcare investment policy to boost medical infrastructure

The Jammu and Kashmir State Administrative Council (SAC) Friday approved the 'State Health Care Investment Policy-2019' aimed at promoting private parties and entrepreneurs to set up healthcare infrastructure in the state. The policy is expected to improve accessibility of quality healthcare services to the people, promote establishment of hospital, medical and allied educational infrastructure and establish the state as a destination of choice for private healthcare service providers, besides promoting medical tourism, a spokesperson said. The SAC met under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik here Friday evening. Facebook will downrank anti-vax propaganda posts

Facebook is taking stricter efforts to battle the rise of anti-vaccination content on its platform.The social networking giant will start downranking groups and pages that spread misinformation about vaccination on both News Feed and its search function.According to TechCrunch, Facebook will also reject ads promoting anti-vaccination propaganda. Those who repeatedly post such content through ads may even see accounts getting disabled.Facebook is taking similar measures for Instagram on which it will stop showing or recommending content that contains misinformation about vaccinations on Instagram Explore or hashtag pages. It will also remove anti-vaccination ad targeting descriptors such as 'vaccine controversies'.The measures come in light of the implications of online misinformation. Odisha approves appointment of another 600 doctors

The Odisha government Friday approved the appointment of 600 physicians to cope up with the large scale vacancy of doctors in state run hospitals, official sources said. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved the fresh appointment of 600 doctors on contact basis a day after appoining 938 doctors on Thursday, an official statement from the chief minister's office said. With the fresh approval, the state government is all set to appoint as many as 1,538 new doctors in all district headquarters hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, primary health centres (PHCs) and community health centres (CHCs). Congratulating the newly appointed doctors, Patnaik exhorted them to sincerely and diligently discharge their duties and provide better healthcare to people.

Three-day international conference on child allergies gets underway in Delhi

Over 100 delegates have gathered in the national capital from various parts of the world for a three-day international conference on child allergies that got underway on Friday. The event is being organised by the Division of Pediatric Emergency, Critical Care, Pulmonology and Allergic Disorders at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH). "Over 30 faculty members and more than 100 delegates from across the globe participated in the event," the hospital said in a statement. Union minister Harsh Vardhan released a book titled 'Allergy in a Nutshell' at the event and officially announced the start of a diploma in pediatric allergy and asthma (DPAA), a "first of its kind" diploma course in pediatric allergies, the statement said. Vaccination deaths; case registered against docs, staff of PHC

: A day after a toddler died and 26 children were hospitalised after developing health problems after being vaccinated at a Primary Health Centre here, police Friday registered a case against doctors and staff involved. Inspector T Amrutha Reddy said the case was registered under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (causing death by negligence) against the doctors and staff allegedly involved in administering and overseeing the vaccination to the children. An infant died and 26 children were hospitalised here Thursday after they developed health complications a day after being administered some vaccine at an urban Primary Health Centre in the city. Plastic containing sanitary pads causing uterine cancer among women, claims activist

A social worker in Champawat district of Uttarakhand Friday demanded a ban on plastic containing sanitary pads being distributed under the state-run Adolescent Hygiene Program, claiming that such pads were causing uterine cancer besides skin diseases among women. Rita Gehtori, winner of Tilu Rauteli award for social work, said village women who are often out in the field to fetch water or fodder from distant areas are at most risk. "I have been told by doctors that using such sanitary pads being distributed by the government under the Adolescent Hygiene Program in villages may cause skin diseases. Wearing them also runs the risk of developing uterine cancer in case of negligence," she said. Measles oubreak kills 261 people in Philippines

Varun Beverages opens Rs 550-cr facility in Punjab for PepsiCo products

PepsiCo India's bottling partner Varun Beverages (VBL) on Friday announced opening of its Rs 550-crore facility in Pathankot, Punjab, which would roll out products from the cola major's beverage portfolio. The integrated facility will produce PepsiCo's Tropicana range of fruit juices, dairy-based products, carbonated soft drinks, Aquafina water, Gatorade and Lipton ice tea, according to a joint statement. 'MIND diet' may reduce dementia risk: Study

A diet designed for brain health may reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairment and disorders including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, a study of dietary patterns in older adults in Australia shows. The study, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia, reviewed the potential protective effects of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet, also known as the MIND diet. The MIND diet is characterised by 15 dietary components with a focus on green leafy vegetables, whole grains, olive oil and small amounts of red meat.
