The different types of bacteria living on the tongue can distinguish patients with early pancreatic cancers from healthy individuals, according to results from a new study published in the Journal of Oral Microbiology. This is the first evidence that suggests changes to the bacteria in the tongue could be an early indicator of pancreatic cancer. If confirmed in larger studies, this could pave the way towards the development of new life-saving early detection or prevention tools for this highly aggressive disease.Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can greatly improve chances of successful treatment - but this poses challenges for this disease as it grows deep inside the body and often shows few symptoms before it has already spread. As a result, most patients already have advanced disease by the time they seek medical help. With researchers searching for biological changes that can accurately detect early signs of pancreatic cancer, a current hot topic is the potential role of the ...

Public health officials scrambling to contain a measles outbreak in the US Northwest warned people to vaccinate their children Monday and worried that it could take months to contain the highly contagious viral illness due to a lower-than-normal vaccination rate at the epicenter of the crisis. The outbreak near Portland has sickened 35 people in Oregon and Washington since January 1, with 11 more cases suspected. Most of the patients are children under 10, and one child has been hospitalized. Health officials say the outbreak is a textbook example of why it's critical to vaccinate against measles, which was eradicated in the US after the vaccine was introduced in 1963. In recent years, however, the viral illness has popped up again from New York to California and sickened hundreds. Clark County, Washington, has a vaccination rate of 78 per cent, well below the level necessary to protect those with compromised immune systems or who can't get vaccinated because of medical issues or ...
BOSTON (Reuters) - A lawyer for Insys Therapeutics Inc's one-time billionaire founder on Monday denied that he had any role in the U.S. opioid crisis as a federal prosecutor told jurors he ran a scheme to bribe doctors to prescribe an addictive fentanyl spray.
A recent study has uncovered a link between paradoxical sleep and genes involved in brain cell death and survival.Increased Rapid eye movement sleep (REM) is one of the most distinctive features of daily mild stress. According to the study, this can be associated with genes involved in cell death and survival.REM sleep, also known as paradoxical sleep, is the sleep state during which we have most of our dreams and is involved in the regulation of emotions and memory consolidation. REM sleep disturbances are common in mood disorders, such as depression. However, little was known about how sleep changes are linked to molecular changes in the brain.During this nine-week-long study, mice were intermittently exposed to a variety of mild stressors, such as the odour of a predator. Mice exposed to mild stressors developed signs of depression; they were less engaged in self-care activities; were less likely to participate in pleasurable activities such as eating appetising food, and became ...

If your ancestors were frequently exposed to stress, there is a chance that you might have developed an improved immune response to stress, a recent study suggests. The research suggests that family history should be considered to predict or understand the health implications of stress. Having ancestors who were frequently exposed to stressors can improve one's own immune response to stressors, according to Penn State researchers."Prolonged stress typically suppresses immune function within an individual. For example, we often think of ourselves as more likely to get a cold when we're stressed," says Tracy Langkilde, lead author of the study. As part of the study, the researchers found that lizards whose ancestors lived in low-stress environments experienced suppressed immune function when they were exposed to prolonged stress."But for lizards whose ancestors lived in high-stress environments, those animals had more robust immune systems when they were exposed to stress. So the immune ..

Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa during her hospitalisation in 2016 had mood fluctuations and wanted to be left alone on several occasions, a doctor who treated her has told an Inquiry commission probing the circumstances leading to the AIADMK leader's death. She was in fluctuating mood, sometimes she will smile, sometimes she will say "leave me alone," the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry said in a recent order quoting the deposition of Dr Shilpa. In her capacity as a critical care duty doctor, she had attended to Jayalalithaa between October 1 and December 4, 2016. Shilpa, an anaesthetist, made the remarks on Jayalalithaa's then health status while giving evidence as a commission witness on the ailments of the late leader. The deposition of Shilpa has been mentioned in the commission's order dismissing a plea of the Apollo Hospitals seeking constitution of a 21-member medical board to help the panel examine medical records related to her treatment in .
Nepal's former crown prince Paras Shah suffered a heart attack on Monday evening following which he was rushed to a local hospital here. Shah, 47, was admitted to Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu. A team of cardiologists led by Dr Yadav Bhatta has been looking after him, according to hospital sources. The doctors have successfully installed angioplasty to the former crown prince and his condition is stable, they said. Shah survived a massive cardiac arrest in Bangkok five years ago. This is the third time Shah suffered a heart attack. Earlier in 2015, an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), a special device powered by battery that helps treat irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias, was successfully planted in his heart. In September 2007, he had undergone an angioplasty operation after suffering a mild stroke.

People who inject drugs may be at a significantly increased risk of a serious bacterial infection of the lining of the heart that can be life-threatening, a study has found. The increased risk of infective endocarditis may be linked to the rising use of the opioid hydromorphone -- a centrally-acting pain medication, researchers said. "We observed a substantial increase in the risk of infective endocarditis among people who inject drugs, which is associated with hydromorphone's increasing share of the prescription opioid market," according to Matthew Weir, assistant professor at Western University in Canada. Researchers looked at Ontario data on drug users from linked health administrative databases between April 2006 and September 2015. There were 60,529 admissions to hospital of people who inject drugs and, of these, 733 had infective endocarditis linked to injecting drugs, according to the study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Although admission rates for ...
