People who have suffered brain haemorrhage can take common medicines such as aspirin without raising their risk of another stroke, suggest researchers.
Over 60 per cent e-cigarette users want to quit smoking and over 25 per cent smokers have already tried to stop using the electronic device, says a new study.
People who suffered a stroke caused by brain haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) can safely continue to take antiplatelet medicines to reduce their risk of future heart attacks or strokes.According to the study published in the Journal of the Lancet, doctors had thought the medicines, which include aspirin and clopidogrel might make people with stroke more likely to suffer another bleed in the brain.Researchers found that people who took antiplatelet medicines experienced fewer recurrences of brain haemorrhage compared with those who did not take these treatments. This suggests that the treatments reduce rather than increase the risk of further bleeding in the brain.Around half of the participants underwent an additional brain scan using MRI at the beginning of the study. These scans are often used by doctors to check for the presence of tiny blood deposits in the brain, known as microbleeds, which can be a warning sign of future strokes. The researchers found treatment with ...

A doctor in Kerala's Malappuram district performed a hernia surgery on a seven-year-old boy instead of removing a growth in his nasal passage after an apparent a mix-up of the names of two patients. The boy, Mohammed Danish, was operated for hernia on Tuesday at a medical college in Manjeri town, 175 km north of Kochi, sources said. The incident came to light when Danish's parents, who are from Karuvarakundu town in the district, saw their son operated in the stomach, instead of removing his nasal polyps. Hospital sources told PTI that there was another patient, named Dhanush, who was supposed to undergo surgery for hernia, and the mistake occurred due to the similarity in their names. State Health Minister K K Shylaja ordered a probe and suspended the doctor, A Suresh Kumar. "Patients must not suffer due to the negligence of the hospital staff," the minister said, adding that the boy would be given free treatment. The state human rights commission has registered a case in connection .

Ramadan fasting can help decrease insulin resistance and maintain a healthy body weight, a study suggests. Researchers showed that the practice of fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadan -- that involves abstinence from food and water from dawn to sunset -- may increase levels of proteins that improve insulin resistance and protect against the risks from a high-fat, high-sugar diet. The research, presented at the Digestive Disease Week 2019 in the US, offers a potential new treatment approach for obesity-related conditions, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). "According to World Health Organization data, obesity affects over 650 million people worldwide, placing them at risk for any number of health conditions," said Ayse Leyla Mindikoglu, an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the US. "Feeding and fasting can significantly impact how the body makes and uses proteins that are critical to decreasing insulin ...
Most young men in Switzerland have poor semen quality, a key determinant of male fertility, reveals a new study. Only 38 per cent of the Swiss men have semen values above the norms set by World Health Organisation (WHO) for fertile men, says the study published in the journal Andrology.
Being exposed to traffic-related air pollution can alter brain chemicals in children, increasing the risk of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, a study has found. Exposure to air pollution is a well-established global health problem associated with complications for people with asthma and respiratory disease, as well as heart conditions and an increased risk of stroke. According to the World Health Organization, pollution is responsible for millions of deaths annually. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in the US studied the correlation between exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and childhood anxiety, by looking at the altered neurochemistry in pre-adolescents. "Recent evidence suggests the central nervous system is particularly vulnerable to air pollution, suggesting a role in the etiology of mental disorders, like anxiety or depression," said Kelly Brunst, an assistant professor at the ...
Longevity along with wellness is a process of moving towards a higher equilibrium of physical, mental and emotional well-being to lead a long and fulfilled life, while preventing disease, says a new book by Sujata Kelkar Shetty, a trained biological scientist.
Exercising for more than usual may lead to improved quality and duration of sleep at night, according to a study on teenagers published Wednesday. The study in Scientific Reports journal found that getting more exercise than normal -- or being more sedentary than usual -- for one day may be enough to affect sleep later that night. It found that for every extra hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, the teens fell asleep 18 minutes earlier, slept 10 minutes longer and had about one per cent greater sleep maintenance efficiency that night. "Adolescence is a critical period to obtain adequate sleep, as sleep can affect cognitive and classroom performance, stress, and eating behaviours," said Lindsay Master, data scientist at Pennsylvania State University in the US. "Our research suggests that encouraging adolescents to spend more time exercising during the day may help their sleep health later that night," Master said. In contrast, the researchers also found that being sedentary
A new evidence suggests air pollution is not just associated with asthma and respiratory diseases, but may also impact metabolic and neurological development of children, putting them at an increased risk of anxiety and depression, says a study.
Having probiotics can not only regulate gut bacteria -- trillions of microorganisms in the gut which perform key functions in the immune system and metabolism -- but also improve brain function and, thus, reduce anxiety, find researchers.
In a recent study, the researchers have found that stem cells generated from the placenta known as Cdx2 cells can regenerate healthy heart cells after heart failure as tested on animal models. The study was discussed in the proceedings of a meeting, 'National Academy of Sciences'Hina Chaudhry, lead author of the study said, "Cdx2 cells have historically been thought to only generate the placenta in early embryonic development, but never before were shown to have the ability to regenerate other organs, which is why this is so exciting. These findings may also pave the way to regenerative therapy of other organs besides the heart.""They almost seem like a super-charged population of stem cells, in that they can target the site of an injury and travel directly to the injury through the circulatory system and are able to avoid rejection by the host immune system," she added. This team of researchers had previously discovered that a mixed population of mouse placental stem cells can help the
A team of researchers has created a smartphone application which helps recognise early symptoms of a rare Huntington's disease.

Children in poor urban areas who suffered physical and emotional neglect, violence, and sexual abuse are likely to be associated with both adolescent depression and violent behaviour, highlights a new study. The study was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health."This is the first global study to investigate how a cluster of traumatic childhood experiences known as ACEs, or adverse childhood experiences, work together to cause specific health issues in early adolescence with terrible, life-long consequences," said Dr. Robert Blum, lead researcher. He added, "And while we found young girls often suffer significantly, contrary to common belief, boys reported even greater exposure to violence and neglect, which makes them more likely to be violent in return."The study incorporated ACEs suffered by 1,284 adolescents aged 10 to 14 in 14 "low-income urban settings" around the world. It found remarkably common experiences with trauma--and very similar impacts--regardless of where the ...
