Low pressure forms over BoB; coastal Odisha to witness rain during Dusshera

With the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Friday, Odisha's coastal districts are likely to witness a wet Dusshera as the IMD has predicted rains from October 23. The IMD has forecast rains in coastal districts of the state from October 23 to 25. "A low-pressure area has formed over Bay of Bengal..., the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar said on X. The system is likely to intensify further into a depression around October 23, it said. "Under its impact, some parts of coastal Odisha would experience rainfall activities from October 23 to 25. Whether heavy rainfall would occur or not, can be predicted only after knowing the path of movement of the depression," IMD centre director H R Biswas said. Heavy rains lash Kerala, orange alert in 4 districts, landslides reported

As heavy rains continued to batter Kerala, landslides and flooding were reported from many parts of the state, especially its southernmost district of Thiruvananthapuram, which was severely affected by waterlogging in several areas on Sunday. According to visuals shown on TV channels, the heavy rains since Saturday led to waterlogging and flooding of streets, roads and low-lying areas of Thiruvananthapuram district. The Technopark colony in Kazhakootam, a suburban area in the district, saw water entering homes leading to people being evacuated from homes, as per the visuals. Water entered hundreds of homes in the district and in some areas there were also incidents of landslides, according to the visuals. Heavy rains, floods kill 6 people in Sri Lanka and force schools to close

Heavy rain triggered floods and mudslides and downed trees in many parts of Sri Lanka, killing at least six people and forcing authorities to close schools in some areas, officials said Friday. Strong monsoon rains have been pounding the Indian Ocean nation for more than a week, flooding houses, fields and roads. Heavy rain, lightning kills 8 people in Jharkhand in last 24 hrs: Official

At least eight people were killed including one in Ranchi due to heavy rain and lightning strikes in Jharkhand in the last 24 hours, an official said on Monday. Parts of Jharkhand have been receiving incessant rains since Saturday evening with several spells of heavy rains, which damaged several culverts, diversions and also claimed several lives. A 28-year-old man fell in an overflowing drain in Hatma Saraitand in Ranchi's Lalpur area on Sunday. The body of the person, identified as Dev Prasad alias Chotu, was recovered around 2.5 km away from the place of occurrence on Monday morning. "The body of the person was recovered this morning and postmortem has also been carried out. He had fallen in an overflowing drain triggered by heavy rain on Sunday," Gonda police station in-charge Ravi Thakur told PTI. Heavy showers continue in Rajasthan, 10 dead in rain-related incidents

Ten people have been killed in rain-related incidents since Sunday in Rajasthan as heavy rains continued to affect normal life in parts of the state on Monday. Eight deaths were reported in different incidents in Banswara on Sunday, while one death occurred in Bikaner and Udaipur respectively, officials said. North Western Railway cancelled two trains and partially cancelled eight other trains as water level at a bridge between Bharuch and Ankleshwar in neighbouring Gujarat was above the danger mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy showers are likely to continue in some parts of Barmer, Jalore and Jaisalmer on September 19 while other parts may see a drop in rainfall. According to the IMD, several parts of Rajasthan recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall with Nithuva in Dungarpur receiving 21 cm of rain and Pratapgarh 16 cm. Gujarat rain: 11,900 shifted, Narmada above danger mark in Bharuch

With heavy rain lashing Gujarat since Sunday, 11,900 people living in low-lying areas in Vadodara, Bharuch, Narmada, Dahod, Panchmahal, Anand and Gandhinagar districts have been shifted to shelter homes while 270 stranded citizens were rescued. In a statement, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said work is on to clear roads by removing fallen trees. More than 8,700 people have been shifted to safer places after heavy rains caused flood-like situation in many areas in Malwa and Nimar regions of Madhya Pradesh, officials said on Sunday. Heavy rains lash Rajasthan, flood-like situation in three districts

Heavy rains lashed parts of Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, triggering flood-like situation in Banswara, Dungarpur and Pratapgarh districts. In Banswara district, which witnessed very heavy rains, a man lost his life after being swept away in a nullah or small canal in on Saturday night, officials said. Dinesh, a sarpanch, was trying to cross the flooded canal on his motorbike when he was washed away along with the bike. Heavy rains in MP: Will call Army if required for flood relief ops, says CM

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said the Army and Air Force will be called in if required for flood relief operations amid heavy rains in the state. He held a virtual meeting with his officials at 1:30am and gave instructions to deal with the situation. Chouhan said he reviewed the situation caused by heavy rains in Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Alirajpur and Indore and spoke to officials of these districts.
