Seaplane to land in Tehri lake next year, says CM Rawat

A seaplane will land on Tehri lake next year as part of an elaborate promotional strategy by the Uttarakhand government to develop the artificial dam reservoir as a major tourist destination, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said today. Speaking at the ongoing Tehri Lake festival, which he could not formally inaugurate as he arrived late due to bad weather, Rawat said the lake had the potential to attract visitors from all over the world and generate employment for thousands of people. "We are working on a number of plans for Tehri lake. At the centre of them is landing a seaplane on it next year," Rawat said after the three-day festival was inaugurated. The chief minister said the lake could become a prominent shooting spot for Bollywood as he highlighted that a yet to be released Hindi film Batti Gul Metre Chalu' starring Shahid Kapoor was recently shot at the lake. Landing of seaplanes on Tehri lake to soon be a reality: Rawat

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat today said that landing of seaplanes will soon be a reality in Tehri lake. Inaugurating the fifth edition of three-day Tehri Lake Festival, Rawat said, "I have talked to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and he had sent a team of experts here. The team did the inspection for the feasibility of the project. The experts have considered Tehri lake as appropriate for the seaplanes." "Nitin Gadkari said that as the concept of seaplanes is new to India and no existing policy regarding seaplane is in effect, a new policy would be introduced," Rawat said while talking to reporters. He further said that Gadkari told him that once the policy is approved by the Union Cabinet, seaplanes would start landing in the lake within three months. 15 people rescued as floating restaurant capsizes off Mumbai

Fifteen people were rescued after a yacht converted into a floating restaurant today capsized in the Arabian Sea near the Bandra Worli Sea Link in Mahim, a senior disaster management control room official said. He said that the Fire Brigade received a call at around 6:20pm, from a person who was passing on the Bandra Worli Sea Link, about the boat facing turbulence. The message was passed on to the Bandra police which, along with the coastal police, rescued 15 people. A Bandra police official said that 15 people had been rescued from the boat which belonged to a company called ART. A Coast Guard official said that the force had not received any SOS about the incident. Tehri Lake festival gets off to colourful start

The Tehri Lake Festival got off to a colourful start here today with cultural performances by artistes from different states, including the host Uttarakhand. Performances by folk singers and dancers from Punjab, Assam, Haryana, Gujarat and Uttarakhand were the day's highlights. The festival was jointly inaugurated by Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, Education Minister Arvind Singh, Tehri MLA Dhan Singh Negi and Pratapnagar MLA Vijay Singh Panwar. Scaling ambitions: India's Arjun Vajpai world's youngest to summit six peaks over 8,000m

Indian mountaineer Arjun Vajpai this week became the youngest person in the world to scale six peaks over 8,000 metres when he summited the treacherous Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. But the real pinnacle, says the 24-year-old, would be when he achieves the "grand slam" of mountaineering -- scaling all 14 mountains over 8,000 metres across the world. On May 20, the Noida-based mountaineer scaled the 8,586-metre Kangchenjunga at 8:05 am IST, but could not come down from the Advanced Base Camp till Thursday morning due to severe weather conditions.
