The rural police cracked down on illegal sand transportation on the Ghodbunder Road in the district, an official said today. Following complaints, the police carried out checks and intercepted the sand-laden trucks near a hotel on the Ghodbunder Road yesterday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Thane rural) Atul Kulkarni said. During verification, the police found that the truck drivers did not not posses valid permits for carrying the sand. The police confiscated 11 trucks along with the sand and booked their drivers and owners under IPC sections pertaining to theft and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, the official said.

Mount Everest's Hillary Step -- a rocky outcrop just below the summit -- is now a slope, say climbers who recently returned from the mountain. The condition of the rock face named after Everest's first summiteer Edmund Hillary has been the subject of intense speculation since climbers last year declared it had gone. Others disagreed saying fresh snowfall had caused the confusion. Mountaineers returning from the summit this month have unanimously said that what was once a near-vertical 12 metre rock face is now a gradual snowy slope and makes the final ascent quicker and easier. Locals residing on coastal hamlet in Tamil Nadu's Dhanushkodi town of Arichal Munai are forced to dig up sandy terrain in order to procure drinking water to meet their daily needs.Approximately 650 fishermen families live in Dhanushkodi, who have been dealing with this crisis for the past thirty years."We have no other way to get water. This problem has been prevailing for the past 30 years. The government has not done anything as yet in this regard. It is also difficult for us to access drinking water especially during summer," a local said."We usually have to dig up the sand and strain it through a piece of cloth when placing it in the container," the local added.

A non-profitable trust in Hyderabad, Zaheer Uddin Khan Memorial Trust serves Iftar to more than 500 poor people daily and distributs ration to over one thousand poor families who can't afford it.Mohammad Azhar, member of Zaheer Uddin Khan Memorial Trust said, "In this month of Ramzan we serve food for Iftar to poor people including children from poor families who can't afford it. They come here after their Roza (Fast) and eat. More than 500 poor people visit here daily to consume food. We serve food for all 30 days"."Our trust also distributes ration to over1000 poor families in Ramzan. We provide all this help from our own income," Azhar told ANI.Mohammad Shafi Ulla, a beneficiary of the trust, said, "It's very appreciative that they distribute ration to so many families, even I and my family receive ration from this trust and we also come here to consume Iftar food daily during the month of Ramzan.
President Ram Nath Kovind today took everyone by surprise by visiting a restaurant run by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation in Shimla and had snacks there. On his return from Peterhoff after attending a civic reception, Kovind and his wife Sarita visited Ashiana restaurant and they had tea and snacks there, officials said. A large number of people gathered around the restaurant to see the president, who greeted them and also paid the bill. The president's motorcade was parked on the Ridge road. Realising that his motorcade was causing inconvenience to people, President Kovind ordered officials to reduce the number of vehicles from 17 to four. He also took a round of the Mall Road and purchased two books from Minerva Book Shop. The staff at the restaurant was overwhelmed by the surprise visit and by the president's gesture to pay the bill. The restaurant's manager said it was an honour to have the president as guest. President Kovind is on a six-day sojourn to Shimla.
Surfing at the 2020 Olympic Games will take place in the ocean and not in an artifical wave pool, according to the International Surfing Association (ISA). "With the support of the ISA, the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 organisers have determined that surfing will take place in the ocean in Tokyo, at Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba," ISA president Fernando Aguerre told AFP today. "The organising committee has not indicated anything to us about the possibility of changing their plan, so we are planning for the chosen location in the ocean."
