New planet could be Spock's home world, scientists say

A 'super-Earth' discovered orbiting a star 16 light years away from us, could be the Star Trek's famed planet Vulcan -- home of the beloved character of Spock from the popular TV series. The discovery was made using the Dharma Endowment Foundation Telescope (DEFT), a 50-inch telescope located atop Mt Lemmon in southern Arizona, US. The planet is the first 'super-Earth' detected by the Dharma Survey. Star Trek creators associated planet Vulcan with a real star, called 40 Eridani A. Scientists from University of Florida (UF) and Tennessee State University (TSU) in the US have now found that the star indeed hosts at least one planet. "The new planet is a 'super-Earth' orbiting the star HD 26965, which is only 16 light years from Earth, making it the closest super-Earth orbiting another Sun-like star," said Jian Ge, an astronomer at UF, who led the study. "The planet is roughly twice the size of Earth and orbits its star with a 42-day period just inside the star's optimal habitable zone,"

Naropa festival concludes with Guinness World Record in Ladakhi dance

Dressed in Gongchas -- a heavy coat-like traditional Ladakhi attire -- 299 women danced together making it to the Guinness World Records and marked the end of the Naropa Festival Thursday. The women, aged between 18 and 60 years, wore Peraks -- turquoise headgears -- and performed the Shondol to Ladakhi music at the Hemis Monastery in the Himalayas. Shondol is a traditional dance performed for the king on special occasions. Speaking after the world record attempt, Swapnil Dangarikar, official adjudicator, Guinness World Records, declared the dance performance as the "Largest Ladakhi Dance". First black female White House reporter gets Newseum statue

The first black woman to be credentialed to cover the White House is getting a statue in the Newseum. Alice Allison Dunnigan made history when she received White House press credentials in 1947 and became part of the White House traveling press corps to cover President Harry Truman re-election campaign in 1948. Dunnigan, as Washington bureau chief for the Associated Negro Press, would go to cover Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy before taking a job with in the Kennedy and then President Lyndon Johnson's administration. She died in 1983. The life sized bronze statue of Dunnigan created by Kentucky sculptor Amanda Matthews will be unveiled on Friday.
