Hit by bus, car catches fire; five burnt alive in UP
Five people were burnt to death when the car in which they were travelling caught fire after being hit by a Nepali tourist bus here in the wee hours of Saturday, police said. The incident took place on Pilibhit-Bareilly road near Khamariya village under Kotwali Jehanabad police station area. All the five occupants were killed after the car caught fire, they said. The identities of the deceased are being ascertained, the police said.
Pakistanis seek world record in ancient sport of tent-pegging
Traditional drumbeats and melodious shahnai flutes are drowned out by thundering hooves in the small Pakistani city of Tulamba, as riders pound down a dusty track seeking world record glory in the ancient sport of tent-pegging. Riders in bright costumes drive their lances into the targets, wooden pegs embedded in the dry ground, their aim sometimes obscured by the dust kicked up by other competitors. The cavalry sport requires a mounted horseman to pierce and pick up a peg from the ground at a full gallop. "This is the sport of young lions," local politician Shaukat Hayat Bosan told AFP. "For this sport not only a good horse but a good rider is also necessary." This year's event organised by the Muhammadiya Hyderia Sultania Awan Club in Tulamba, held on Wednesday, aimed to be a little different: organisers claim they used it to set six world records. 60-year-old man trampled to death
A 60-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant Friday, when he had gone to take a dip in a river near a temple at Mullankadu on the outskirts, police said. An elephant, lying on the bank, suddenly attacked and trampled the man, who died on the spot, they said. The man had gone to the Veerakaliamman temple for offering prayers, they said.

Rangers free 6 trapped baby elephants in Thailand
Rangers at a national park in northeastern Thailand have rescued six baby elephants that were trapped in a mud pit. Park officials said the elephants were unable to climb up the pit's slippery banks. Rescuers took five hours on Thursday to dig a path for them to clamber out. A video taken by rangers at Thap Lan National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province shows the baby elephants climbing one by one from the muddy ditch. The head of the park, Prawatsart Chantep, said rangers patrolling the park's forest areas found the animals stuck in the pit on Wednesday afternoon and at nightfall, one group of rangers left to get help while another group remained with the elephants. Prawatsart said there were signs that a herd of elephants believed to be related to the trapped infants was circling the area. It was unclear how the elephants became trapped.
