Pink, pastels and metallic dominate Oscars red carpet

A year after Oscars traded for an all-black look on the red carpet marking the emergence of #MeToo and Time's Up movements, Academy Awards 2019 painted the town pink with a smatter of metallic shades, pastels and nudes. "Pose" actor Billy Porter, however, threw the real gender-bender when he appeared in a black velvet Christian Siriano dress and a coordinated bolero jacket. Known for breaking fashion barriers, both on-screen and off-screen, Porter chose a rather subtle look from his usual flamboyant wardrobe. Helen Mirren, Angela Bassett, Kacey Musgraves, Gemma Chan, Jason Momoa and wife Lisa Bonet, and Sarah Paulson were some of the names who added a pop of colour to the ceremony. Dressed in a custom fuchsia Reem Acra gown with Casadei sandals and matching earrings, Bassett looked regal. This year's multiple Grammy winner Musgraves opted for voluminous Giambattista Valli tulle gown with tiered skirt and flared sleeves. While Mirren twirled for the shutterbugs in a V-neck long-sleeve .

Dogs have unique personalities shaped by owners: Study

Pet dogs, just like humans, have distinct 'personalities' that are gradually shaped by their owner's behaviour, and can even change over time, a study claims. Researchers said that when dog owners spend extra time scratching their dogs' bellies, take them out for long walks and games of fetch, they are gradually shaping their pooches' personalities. Dogs, like people, have moods and personality traits that shape how they react in certain situations, researchers said. "When humans go through big changes in life, their personality traits can change. We found that this also happens with dogs -- and to a surprisingly large degree," said William Chopik, a professor at Michigan State University in the US. "We expected the dogs' personalities to be fairly stable because they don't have wild lifestyle changes humans do, but they actually change a lot," said Chopik. "We uncovered similarities to their owners, the optimal time for training and even a time in their lives that they can get more ..

His parade plan foiled, Trump announces 'one of biggest' July 4 events

After giving up his idea for a huge military parade in Washington, President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a July 4 "Salute to America" that he predicted would be "one of the biggest gatherings" in the city's history. "HOLD THE DATE" Trump said in one of a series of tweets early Sunday. He said the event would be held at the Lincoln Memorial on the west end of the National Mall and would feature a "major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!" After witnessing the grandeur of the Bastille Day parade in Paris in 2017 in the company of President Emmanuel Macron, Trump had pressed for an equally impressive Veterans Day parade in Washington, with marching troops, convoys of armored vehicles and roaring overflights by squadrons of elite fighter jets. But his military advisers reportedly pushed back, particularly after an estimate surfaced that the event could cost taxpayers as much as USD 92 million. In retreating from his plan last August, Trump

"Japan has long cultivated its own culture as an island nation," the 85-year-old emperor said. "But now the world is becoming more globalised. I think it is now required for us to be more open to the outside world, to establish our own position with wisdom and to build relationships with other countries with sincerity." Akihito's Heisei era will end when he abdicates on April 30 in favour of his elder son, 59-year-old Crown Prince Naruhito, beginning a new, as yet unnamed era. The Emperor has cited his deteriorating health as his reason for stepping aside. Humans had pet foxes in Bronze Age: Study

Humans domesticated foxes, along with dogs, between the third and second millennium BC, claim scientists who found that during the time the diet of these animals was similar to that of their owners. The discovery of four foxes and a large number of dogs at the Can Roqueta (Barcelona) and Minferri (Lleida) sites stands out among the many examples of tombs in different parts of in the northeast of Iberian Peninsula. These burials showed a generalised funeral practice that proliferated in the Early to Middle Bronze Age -- that of burying humans together with domestic animals, the team said in a statement. What is most striking about these sites is the way of burying the dead in large silos, along with their dogs and a few foxes. "We discovered that in some cases the dogs received a special kind of food. We believe this is linked to their function as working dogs. Besides, one of the foxes shows signs of having already been a domestic animal in those times," Aurora Grandal-d'Anglade, from
