Woman attempts to set son, self ablaze, rescued

A woman attempted to set herself and her six-year-old son on fire at a police station here Tuesday but police foiled her bid. The 30-year-old woman doused herself and her son with kerosene in front of the Korukkupet police station but moments before she could light a matchstick, two women police personnel overpowered her and threw away the match box. The woman attempted to end her life due to an alleged threatening phone call from her sister, police said. She was also allegedly intimidated by her sibling's lover. Chennai city police commissioner A K Viswanathan later honoured the police sub-inspector and constable at his office for rescuing the duo.

UK baby's spine 'repaired' in the womb after mom undergoes

An unborn baby in the UK has had a successful "foetal repair" surgery on her spine while she was still in her mother's womb. Bethan Simpson, 26, from Essex, was told her unborn daughter Eloise had spina bifida, a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly, at her 20-week scan. Simpson has become one of the first mothers in the UK to undergo the pioneering "foetal repair" surgery. During a four-hour operation her womb was opened and her baby's bottom exposed, allowing surgeons to "sew up" a tiny hole in her lower spine. Simpson said she "couldn't justify terminating a child I could feel kicking". The procedure has been deemed successful and the baby is now due in April, the BBC reported on Tuesday. Simpson said she and husband Keiron were advised to terminate her pregnancy after the condition was diagnosed, but the decision to opt for foetal repair was a "no brainer". Ex gratia to kin of man who killed himself outside AP Bhawan, Naidu links it to SCS protest

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu Monday announced Rs 20 lakh ex gratia for the family of a differently-abled man who allegedly committed suicide outside Andhra Pradesh. He also announced a state funeral for the 40-year-old Davala Arjun Rao, a resident of Kinthali village in Srikakulam district, on Tuesday. While Naidu linked the suicide with the demand for a special status category for Andhra Pradesh, the Delhi Police said he consumed poison as he was facing financial crisis. Naidu is on a dharna to demand special status for his state and fulfilment of commitments made by the Centre under the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. Police said Rao killed himself on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
