How India's T20 World Cup-bound players have fared so far in IPL 2024

The likes of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were automatic choices in India's T20 World Cup squad but the others made the cut with their exploits in the ongoing IPL. Nine of 15 players picked in the squad were also part of the team that went to Australia for the last edition of the tournament in 2022. Here is the lowdown on the selected India players' performance in the IPL so far: 1) Rohit Sharma: He has been among the standout batters for Mumbai Indians in what is turning out to be a forgettable season for the five-time champions. In 9 matches, he has scored 311 at an excellent strike-rate of 160.30 with a top score of 105 not out against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. 2) Hardik Pandya: A debatable selection as he is enduring a disastrous IPL. Appointed MI's captain under controversial circumstances, Hardik has scored 197 runs, which includes 10 sixes, in nine IPL matches so far. When it comes to bowling, he has taken four wickets at an economy

T20 WC, South Africa squad: Nortje returns; 2 uncapped players also named

Pacer Anrich Nortje will return to international action after a ninth-month injury layoff while the uncapped duo of Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman was included in South Africa's T20 World Cup squad on Tuesday. Aiden Markram will lead the side in what will be his first World Cup assignment since being named T20I captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Rickelton and pacer Baartman have been rewarded for their stellar run in this year's SA20. Rickelton finished as the leading run-scorer in the second edition of SA20 with 530 runs at an average of 58.88 for MI Cape Town, while Baartman took 18 wickets in eight matches for defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and is currently with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals. The team will also benefit from the expertise of batters Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and the promising Tristan Stubbs, who is in sensational form. Leading the pace attack will be Kagiso Rabada and Nortje, who has been o

Ganguly backs Kohli to get 40-ball 100, wants him to open with Rohit in WC

Virat Kohli is very much capable of getting a 40-ball-100 like Travis Head and he should open the batting with India skipper Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas, former captain Sourav Ganguly said on Monday. Kohli recently scored a 67-ball-100 against Rajasthan Royals but received flak because of his strike-rate at a time when openers from other teams are taking anything between 39 to 50 balls to hit the three-figure mark. "Virat Kohli has got the capability of getting a 40-ball 100 also. As I said at the start, India, with the talent they have, you just need to go and hit. Mindset should be to hit and then we'll see what happens after 5-6 overs," Ganguly told PTI during a select media interaction. While Ganguly would like the selection committee, coach Rahul Dravid and Rohit to take decisions in the best interest of the team during the T20 World Cup, he would ideally like to see the Kohli-Rohit opening combination. "If you ask me and it's just my personal ..

T20 World Cup 2024: Pitches in Caribbean will be slower than IPL - Warner

The flat decks on offer during the ongoing IPL might have made the role of an anchor batter irrelevant to an extent but Delhi Capitals opener David Warner says such players will play a key role during the World T20 in the Caribbean, where slow turners will test all the batters. India's Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are such players with old school approach where they still build an innings before going hammer and tongs but the likes of Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Jos Buttler and Jake-Fraser McGurk have been simply unstoppable in their start-to-finish mayhem. Asked if batting template in IPL can be replicated in the World T20, Warner replied in a negative. "They (pitches in West Indies) can be slower and they're gonna turn a bit. I don't think they're going to be as compact as they are here. You know, I've played a lot of cricket over there. I've played in the CPL. The wickets tend to get a little bit lower and slower," Warner said while replying to a PTI query. "Even when we played .

IPL 2024: Big blow for DC, Mitch Marsh returns to Australia due to injury

Delhi Capitals have suffered a major setback as their Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has returned home to undergo treatment for a tear in his right hamstring. Marsh, who is set to be named Australia's captain for the T20 World Cup in June, was recalled after consultations with the Delhi team management, according to ESPNCricinfo. However, a final call on his availability for the remainder of the season is yet to be taken. Marsh last played against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 3 and missed their previous two outings against Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. Marsh's top-score this season has only been 23 versus Rajasthan Royals, which DC won by 12 runs. He got out for a duck in their 106-run defeat against KKR. Marsh has been on a roll across formats for the Kangaroos, leading to him winning the Allan Border Medal for the most outstanding male Australian cricketer of the year. Since January 2023, the 32-year-old has scored 1,954 international runs in 38 outings at a

IPL 2024 - Pressure is to continue to play the way I'm playing: Head

Travis Head raised his career graph a few notches up in 2023 but the Australian batter understands that staying at that level is a challenging task, and the first stop for him in that journey is the upcoming T20 World Cup. Head's hundreds in two of the biggest cricketing occasions last year the WTC final and the 50-over World Cup summit clash were Australia's guiding force against India. But the 30-year-old now wants to be at his best-prepared self for the World Cup through the Indian Premier League experience. I've come a long way as a player. I guess owning a little bit of the style I want to play and the way I have played overseas too, I've been able to tick a few boxes. Now, the pressure is to continue to play the way I am playing, Head told PTI in an interview. I think in all formats, I need to make sure that I go back to what simplifies everything, which is my technique and my blueprint, he added. Head showed his adaptive skills while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the

IPL 2024: Eoin Morgan feels Pant walks into India's playing 11 at T20 WC

Rishabh Pant has taken very little time to operate at his best after making a comeback from a horrific car crash and therefore, the X-factor player walks into India's playing eleven at the T20 World Cup, feels former England skipper Eoin Morgan. Pant, who is back in action after 14 months, has already smashed two fifties in five games and has a strike rate of 154.54. The other contenders for the wicket-keeper batter's slot are Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Jitesh Sharma but Pant has pushed himself at the top of the pecking order with his performance so far in the IPL. When asked why he would pick Pant over others, Morgan spoke with crystal clarity. " (I would pick him) because he is the player that he is. I don't see him being hampered in anyway coming back from his car crash. For me he is a very disruptive player. "As a leftie he can play a big role in the middle order and add a huge amount of pressure as opposed to generic right handers," said the ODI World Cup winning captain

Broad terms Stokes call to miss T20 World Cup right, Jofra Archer a concern

Former England pacer Stuart Board has backed talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes' decision to opt out of this year's T20 World Cup due to fitness reasons but expressed concerns about fast bowler Jofra Archer's never-ending injury woes. Supporting Stokes' pullout from the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, Board said the defending champions will miss his aura but have enough resources to replace him as a player. "Whatever Ben decides to do for the well-being of himself is the right decision. Ben Stokes has made some incredible decisions in his career that have paid off for him," Broad, a member of the Star Sports Incredible Star Cast, told PTI in an exclusive interaction at their studio here. "He wants to get back to (being) the all-rounder that he was and he feels like getting some workload through the knee in a controlled environment, without the help of a scale to pressurise the nature of a T20 World Cup, is the best choice," he said. While Archer has found it ...

IPL 2024: Rabada hopeful of Mayank Yadav playing T20 World cup for India

Immensely impressed by Mayank Yadav's raw speed and accuracy, South Africa and Punjab Kings pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada sees the fast bowling sensation as a "potential pick" in India's squad for the T20 World Cup. The 21-year-old from Delhi has been pushing the speed barrier with every game and on Tuesday night, bowled a 156.7 kmph thunderbolt against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It was his second straight man of the match performance in his debut season, leading Lucknow Super Giants to a convincing win. Rabada's team Punjab Kings was at the receiving end of Mayank's barrage of short-pitched deliveries last week when the debutant struck thrice with his rattling pace. One of the best pacers in the game, the South African also spoke about Mayank's remarkable accuracy. "He has got something that you cannot buy and that is raw pace. That is what exactly he is exploiting and exploiting it extremely well," Rabada told PTI in an interview. "The lengths that he hits, his plan is clear and

Archer bowling at 'exceptional pace', trying to get him ready for T20 WC

Jofra Archer is once again cranking up "exceptional pace" following a series of injury setbacks since 2019 and is on England selectors' radar for the T20 World Cup this year. Archer's county side Sussex's coach Paul Farbrace said that the 29-year-old is bowling with the likes of England's Ollie Robinson and the West Indies' Jayden Seales in training and the plan is to make him ready for the showpiece event. "Last week in practice there was a spell where Oliver (Robinson) had bowled, Jayden bowled and then Jofra came into the middle and bowled -- and he came marching out and bowled exceptionally quick," Farbrace was quoted as saying by The Telegraph on Tuesday. Farbrace added he was mighty pleased to see Archer uprooting the stumps of Oli Carter a couple of times in the last few outings. "At the moment the plan is very clear from (James) Keysy (Sussex's bowling coach) that they're getting him ready for the T20 World Cup. All I can say is what I have seen, he came with us to India an
