Govt not encouraging Chinese FDI: Piyush Goyal clarifies policy stance

India does not intend to encourage foreign direct investments (FDI) from China, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday, indicating New Delhi's intentions of not easing overseas investment curbs imposed on the neighbouring country in 2020. FDI applications from countries sharing land borders, such as China, have to mandatorily seek government approval for all sectors. This policy was issued in April 2020. "As of now, there's hardly any foreign direct investment from China...It was the same 25 years ago when it (FDI) was open (from China), not too much Chinese investment has come to India. Nor are we encouraging any significant investment coming in from China at all. At the moment, that is the policy," Goyal said here at an event. The remarks assume significance as certain quarters are of the view that the rule needs to be eased to attract technology and capital. In 2020, the government made its approval mandatory for FDI from countries that share land borders wit

India imposes anti-dumping duty on 5 Chinese goods including aluminium foil

India has imposed anti-dumping duty on four Chinese goods, including vacuum flasks and aluminium foil, during the month so far to guard domestic players from cheap imports from the neighbouring country. These duties were imposed as these products -- Soft Ferrite Cores, certain thickness of vacuum insulated flask, aluminium foil, and Trichloro Isocyanuric Acid -- were exported to India from China at below normal prices. In separate notifications, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Department of Revenue, said that the duty imposed "shall be levied for a period of five years" on imports of Soft Ferrite Cores, vacuum insulated flask, and Trichloro Isocyanuric Acid. The anti-dumping duty of up to USD 873 per tonne was imposed provisionally on aluminium foil for six months. The government has imposed the duty in the range of USD 276 per tonne to USD USD 986 per tonne on imports of the acid (a water treatment chemical) from China and Japan. The commerce ministry's investigation arm DGTR has recommended anti-dumping duty of up to USD 20.87 per kilogram on import of a certain kind of vitamin, used for animal consumption, from China, the European Union and Switzerland for five years. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) in its findings has concluded that imports of 'Vitamin A Palmitate' have significantly increased in absolute terms. Review of Chinese investment ban in India unlikely anytime soon, says CEA

A review of the nearly five-year old restrictions on Chinese investments into India is unlikely in the near future, a senior official said on Tuesday. Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said both countries have to understand the importance of mutual dependence and mutual benefits. "I don't think it is something you would expect to see immediate results because both sides are crossing the river by feeling the stones, so to speak," Nageswaran said, replying to a specific question on whether any changes are afoot. It can be noted that following violent clashes between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Galwan valley in 2020, the Indian government introduced measures restricting investments from countries sharing a land border with India that was taken to be an attempt to restrict Chinese play. Speaking at the IVCA event here, Nageswaran did acknowledge that both countries have been engaged in a conversation on the trade imbalances, probably drawing from the parleys on various iss
