India's power demand may rise 9-10% in 2025 as summers arrive: Experts

India should prepare for a nine to 10 per cent growth in peak electricity demand this summer with the country expected to experience more heatwaves, experts have warned. Last year, the all-India peak electricity demand crossed 250 gigawatts (GW) on May 30, which was 6.3 per cent higher than projections. Climate change-induced heat stress is one of the key factors driving electricity demand. Currently, industries, households and agriculture account for 33 per cent, 28 per cent and 19 per cent of India's total electricity consumption, respectively. Household electricity demand has grown the fastest over the past decade, according to Disha Agarwal, Senior Programme Lead Renewables at the Delhi-based think tank Council on Energy, Environment and Water. The share of household electricity consumption increased from 22 per cent in 2012-13 to 25 per cent in 2022-23. Much of this rise can be attributed to economic growth and the increasing need for cooling due to rising temperatures, expert

100 GW nuclear power by 2047 ambitious, achievable: Jitendra Singh

Union minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday said the goal to generate 100 GW nuclear power by 2047 is ambitious and achievable, and state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and its subsidiaries aim to fulfill nearly half of that target. Addressing a post-budget webinar organised by NITI Ayog, Singh said India's electricity needs are expected to increase four to five times by 2047 and renewable energy sources alone cannot meet the base-load demand. He said nuclear energy will play a key role in meeting India's energy needs in the future. Singh, as Minister of State in the PMO, oversees the Department of Atomic Energy. "Achieving 100 GW of nuclear power will require a focused and determined approach, adding around four GW annually from now onwards," he said, expressing confidence in meeting the goal with proper planning and execution. He said the Union Budget 2024-25's vision for India's nuclear power expansion has set a target of achieving 100 GW by 2047. Singh s

Extend waiver on charges for renewable energy till 2030: Power producers

Power producers have asked the government to keep the waiver on inter-state transmission charges for renewable energy until 2030 to help clean energy take root more deeply in India's economy. A consultative meeting chaired by Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi was held on February 5, where Wind Independent Power Producers Association (WIPPA) and other associations shared their concerns and suggestions. A key demand from the players was to extend the waiver on inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges, which is otherwise due to end on June 30 this year, sources aware of the matter said. Renewable energy players requested MNRE to extend the ISTS waiver till 2030 to promote investments in the sector and aid India's ambitious energy transition goals. Currently, charges are waived for 25 years for green power projects such as solar, wind, and hybrid projects, and battery energy and pump storage projects commissioned before June 30, 2025. The current ISTS waiver he

Power producers face loss as CERC bars payment till plants begin ops

Power producers have opposed Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's new norm of not mandating any payments for power they supply to grid before start of commercial production as it may lead to heavy losses. An association of power producers on January 23 wrote to CERC on the new provision for so-called infirm power, seeking a review of the norm. The decision to not pay for infirm power will lead to a huge loss. Thermal power generators can incur an expense to an extent of Rs 1,000 crore during the 6-12 month trial period towards infirm power before they achieve commercial operation of the plant. "All generating stations will face serious financial constraints in conducting the testing and commissioning activities to complete the trial run operation, as there will not be any source of funding for the fuel expenses. Normally, lenders do not fund fuel expenses," the Association of Power Producers wrote to CERC. Earlier, the regulatory regime allowed recovery of some price/cost ..

PLI for transmission equipment manufacturing can be explored: Power secy

Various options, including PLI for transmission equipment manufacturing, can be explored to boost the power transmission infrastructure of the country, Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal said on Monday. Agarwal said he has requested the industry stakeholders to think about ways to localize the supply chain for transmission equipment. He was replying to a question on PLI scheme for transmission equipment, on the sidelines of 'Brainstorming Conclave on Indian Power Sector Scenario by 2047' organised by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in partnership with Ficci. "I requested the participants to also think how can we localize the supply chain for transmission equipment as global supply chains are under strain...and do we need some PLI kind of scheme for some kind of equipment....I have requested to explore that whether that can help or some of other driver would be required," the official said. Agarwal also said that about 1650 GW of renewable capacity worldwide is waiting to get connec

India's power consumption declines 4.7% to 144.2 billion units in Aug

India's power consumption declined 4.7 to 144.21 billion units (BU) in August compared to the year-ago period, mainly due to the above normal rainfall across the country which reduced the use of cooling appliances like air conditioners and desert coolers. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the country recorded 287.1 mm of rainfall in August, which is about 16 per cent higher than the normal 248.1 mm. In August 2023, the power consumption stood at 151.32 BU, according to official data. The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) also contracted to 216.68 GW in August 2024 against 236.29 GW in the year-ago month. The peak power demand touched an all-time high of about 250GW in May this year. The previous all-time high peak power demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023. Earlier this year, the power ministry projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during evening hours for May and 240 GW during daytime and 235 GW in the eveni
