India celebrated a key milestone in its G20 presidency on Monday with the hosting of the 100th meeting of the grouping, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. The Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS) in Varanasi is the 100th meeting of the grouping under India's presidency that began on December 1 last year. The second Health Working Group in Goa, the 2nd Digital Economy Working Group in Hyderabad and the Space Economy Leaders' Precursor Meeting in Shillong are also being held on Monday, according to the MEA. India's G20 presidency will continue till November 30. The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Trkiye, United Kingdom, and United States) and the European Union. Union Minister of State for Home Nitayanand Rai on Monday said there has been a drop in incidents of fire in the country in the last few years, which has led to an increase in the pace of development. Speaking at an event at National Fire Service College (NFSC) in Nagpur, Rai said many countries had approached India to learn about its fire safety measures and mechanisms. The minister praised students and staff of the NFSC for their readiness and commitment to their duties, even in the face of danger. Vietnam Airline to connect Mumbai with Ho Chi Minh City from May 20

Vietnam's national carrier Vietnam Airline on Monday announced it will connect India's financial capital Mumbai with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from May 20. As part of its summer schedule, the airline will commence four flights per week to Mumbai from Hanoi and three flights in a week from Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnamese flag carrier already flies to New Delhi from these two cities. To constantly expand the international network to meet increasing demand of passengers, Vietnam Airlines will launch from May 20 a new route connecting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Mumbai (India), the airline said in a statement. Volvo Car India reports 38% growth in sales in January-March quarter

Volvo Car India on Monday said it has sold 544 units in the first quarter of this year, a 38 per cent growth, over the same period last year. The automaker had sold 393 units in the January-March period of last year. The sales growth during the period was led by the XC60 which registered a 27 per cent growth, the automaker said in a statement. The locally assembled all-electric XC40 Recharge saw 138 units being delivered during this period thereby contributing 25 per cent of the total volume, it added. "A 38 per cent growth confirms positive customer sentiments in our luxury mobility offerings," Volvo Car India Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra said. Considering production of passenger vehicle tyres in India: Michelin CEO

French tyre major Michelin is actively considering production of passenger vehicle tyres locally in India, according to the group Chief Executive Officer Florent Menegaux. The local manufacturing would help the Clermont-Ferrand based tyre major to scale up operations in India, which remain critically subdued with the government introducing import restrictions in 2020. The tyre maker, which has presence in 175 countries with 67 plants, currently sells only premium bigger size tyres in limited quantity especially for performance oriented models in India. In 2020, the government imposed curbs on imports of certain new pneumatic tyres used in motor cars, busses, lorries and motorcycles in a move to promote domestic manufacturing. Tyre companies can now import only a small number of tyres into the country under a limited import licence, which was not the case before 2020. India reports 10,093 Covid-19 cases, 23 deaths; active tally at 57,542

India added 10,093 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases increased to 57,542, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll has increased to 5,31,114 with 23 deaths. While five deaths were reported from Delhi, three each were from Chattisgarh and Rajasthan, two each from Karnataka and Maharashtra, one each from Haryana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand and four reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.61 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 4.78 per cent. The Covid case tally was recorded at 4.47 crore (4,48,18,115) The active cases now comprise 0.13 per cent of the total infections and the national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.68 per cent, according to the health ministry website.
