Prannoy bags maiden bronze at World Championships after losing in semis

HS Prannoy's dream run at the World Championships ended after he lost in three games to world number 3 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the men's singles semifinal to sign off with a bronze, extending India's record of having at least one medallist in the showpiece since 2011. The 31-year-old Prannoy squandered an opening game advantage and a 5-1 lead in the second as Vitidsarn, a three-time former world junior champion, dished out better defence and attack to win 18-21 21-13 21-14 and seal a second successive final spot. Notwithstanding the loss, it was a brilliant achievement for Prannoy as he became only the fifth Indian men's singles player to win a World Championships medal. Kidambi Srikanth (silver), Lakshya Sen (bronze), B Sai Praneeth (bronze) and Prakash Padukone (bronze) are the other medallists in men's singles. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu won five singles medals, including a gold in 2019, and Saina Nehwal (silver and bronze) claimed two, while the women's doub

Shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy must avoid price shock: BP chief

British energy major BP chief executive Bernard Looney on Saturday echoed India's views on energy transition being just and orderly, saying the shift from fossil-based system of energy to renewable sources has to be done in a manner so as to avoid price shocks like the ones witnessed last year. Looney said oil and gas will continue to be a source of energy for the world for "many, many decades to come" and companies and countries around the world have to continue investing in existing fossil fuels and in transition projects at the same time. Speaking at the B20 Summit India organised by CII, he said the world needs a rapid and at the same time orderly transition. Oil and gas, extracted from below ground and seabed and used to power vehicles, fly airplanes, produce power and used in several industries, make up for 55 per cent of the world's energy consumption. Replacing it won't happen overnight and so there is a need to continue investing in today's energy system so as to meet dema

Bihar govt asks ministers' secys not to interfere in working of depts

The Bihar government has advised private secretaries of state ministers, other than those picked up from the administrative services, not to meddle in the functioning of the departments concerned. In a missive on Friday, Bihar Chief Secretary Amir Subhani asked all the additional chief secretaries of the departments to ensure that such private secretaries refrain from correspondence or oral communication with department officials and confine themselves to "non-government" functions of the minister. "In the absence of any clear-cut guidelines pertaining to the work allocation/distribution among private secretaries (administrative services) and private secretaries (private) of ministers, it is becoming difficult to define their roles in the day to day functioning. "Therefore, after a detailed deliberation, it has been decided that private secretaries (administrative services) will do all inter-departmental communications on behalf of the concerned minister/ department on the direction

Putin will not personally attend G20 summit in India: Kremlin spokesman

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not personally attend the G20 summit to be held in New Delhi on September 9-10, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced here on Friday. "No, the president has no such plans, the official Tass news agency quoted the Kremlin spokesman as saying. The format of Putin's participation would be determined later, Peskov said. Putin did not personally attend the just-concluded BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. He was represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. President Putin decided against attending the first in-person BRICS summit after Covid-19 as the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in March over an alleged scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia. South Africa is an ICC signatory and was expected to help in Putin's arrest if he was present in the country.

A significant opportunity exists to strengthen global manufacturing in India, according to President and CEO of global transportation giant FedEx Raj Subramaniam. Addressing a session at the B20 Summit organised by CII, Subramaniam on Friday said about the opportunity for India to reduce non-tariff barriers, and make it streamlined and easy so that the goods can flow across borders as smoothly as possible. "India represents about 2.8 per cent of global manufacturing. Who here will doubt that we can double that, triple that, what is the limit," he said, adding, "There is a significant opportunity to increase the percentage of global manufacturing in India and I think this is a moment of opportunity here". The FedEx CEO observed that there lies "a significant opportunity while we double or triple manufacturing there is an opportunity to reduce the cost of logistics as a percentage of GDP in India, maybe even halve it". He praised the PM Gati Shakti - a National Master plan for ...
