Iran's currency falls further against the dollar amid anti-govt protests

Iran's currency fell to a record low against the dollar on Sunday, with nationwide anti-government protests now in their third month. A breakdown in negotiations to restore Tehran's nuclear deal has also hurt the value of the rial. Traders in Tehran were exchanging the rial at around 370,000 to the dollar on Sunday, up from 368,000 on Thursday. Iran's currency was trading at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of the 2015 nuclear accord that dropped international sanctions in exchange for tight controls on Iran's nuclear program. Iran has been gripped by nationwide protests since September. Demonstrations broke out following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country's morality police. She was detained by the force for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women. The status of the morality police remains unclear after Iran's chief prosecutor, Mohamed Jafar Montazeri, said last week that the force had 'closed down.'' Iranian state

Iran morality police status unclear after 'closure' comment due to protests

An Iranian lawmaker said Sunday that Iran's government is paying attention to the people's real demands, state media reported, a day after a top official suggested that the country's morality police whose conduct helped trigger months of protests has been shut down. The role of the morality police, which enforces veiling laws, came under scrutiny after a detainee, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, died in its custody in mid-September. Amini had been held for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress codes. Her death unleashed a wave of unrest that has grown into calls for the downfall of Iran's clerical rulers. Iran's chief prosecutor Mohamed Jafar Montazeri said on Saturday the morality police had been closed," the semi-official news agency ISNA reported. The agency did not provide details, and state media hasn't reported such a purported decision. In a report carried by ISNA on Sunday, lawmaker Nezamoddin Mousavi signalled a less confrontational approach toward the ...

Fifa 2022: Protester with rainbow flag banned from World Cup matches

The protester who ran onto the field during a World Cup match carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a blue Superman T-shirt with messages in support of Ukraine and Iranian women was banned Tuesday from attending any more matches during the tournament in Qatar. The World Cup organising committee said in a statement that the individual involved was released shortly after being removed from the pitch and that his embassy had been informed. As a consequence of his actions, and as is standard practice, his (entry permit) has been cancelled and he has been banned from attending future matches at this tournament," the statement said. The protester identified himself on social media as Mario Ferri, an Italian who has carried out similar stunts at soccer matches before. Ferri ran onto the field in the second half of Monday's match between Portugal and Uruguay carrying the rainbow flag. Security officials chased him down and Ferri dropped the flag on the field before he was escorted away. I'l

UN's human rights body considers new scrutiny of Iran amid protests

Germany's foreign minister appealed on Thursday for greater scrutiny of Iran ahead of a special session by the UN's top human rights body devoted to the Islamic Republic's bloody crackdown on protesters. All our efforts go to the people who demand their rights with courage and dignity, Annalena Baerbock, the foreign minister, said in a statement. For these demands alone, they are killed by the hundreds, arrested by the thousands, and oppressed by the millions. The Human Rights Council was set to debate and vote on a proposal, presented by Germany and Iceland and backed by dozens of other countries, to set up a team of independent investigators to monitor human rights in Iran as protests continue. The protests were trigged by the death in mid-September of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died while being held by the morality police for violating a strictly enforced Islamic dress code. The session in Geneva is the latest international effort to put pressure on Iran over its crackdown, w
