Hindustan Zinc gets licence to explore, mine tungsten block in Andhra

Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) on Saturday said it has received the licence to explore and mine a tungsten block in Andhra Pradesh by the state government. This marks an important milestone for the Vedanta Group company as it looks to expand beyond zinc, lead, and silver into critical and high-value minerals essential for advanced manufacturing. "Hindustan Zinc Ltd has been officially announced as the successful bidder for a tungsten and associated mineral block in Andhra Pradesh, following the receipt of the formal composite licence from the state government," the company said in a statement. A composite licence in mining is a single, two-stage concession that grants both the right to explore for minerals and the right to mine them if the exploration is successful. Earlier this year, the company had been declared the preferred bidder through a competitive auction process conducted by the Centre. "This milestone marks another step forward in Hindustan Zinc's journey of expanding its min

Industry body UCCIL warns against export duty on low-grade iron ore

Industry body UCCIL has warned that an export duty on low-grade iron ore will lead to drop in production, domestic prices, long-term capacity losses and erosion of India's export competitiveness. The government is planning to impose a 30 per cent export duty on low-grade iron ore from October this year. The Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry Ltd (UCCIL) said in a statement, "The proposed export duty will also result in sectoral destabilisation: a likely decline in production, crashing domestic prices, erosion of India's export competitiveness, and long-term capacity losses. The effect will also be felt in employment, regional economies, and industrial output." It "urged the Government of Odisha to protect the state's iron ore mining industry given the recent discussions by the central government around the imposition of export duties on low-grade iron ore". Such a measure will inevitably destroy the sector, cause a collective loss of over Rs 16,200 crore to the exchequer of ...

GCCI urges Centre not to impose export duty on low-grade iron ore

The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has urged the Centre not to impose export duty on low-grade iron ore, claiming it would result in an annual revenue loss of more than Rs 800 crore from the existing production alone. Such a move would deal a major blow to Goa's mining sector, destabilise ongoing operations, undermine investor confidence and jeopardise thousands of livelihoods dependent on the industry, the GCCI said in a letter to Union Minister of Mines G Kishan Reddy. Appealing to the Centre to weigh Goa's "unique structural constraints," GCCI urged that the present NIL export duty regime for low-grade ores from Goa and the Konkan region be retained. "Such an approach will support local livelihoods, ensure sector viability, maintain fair trade practices, and avoid destabilising an already fragile industry," the chamber said. The apprehension, it said, stems from deliberations at a high-level stakeholders' meeting held on August 26 to boost iron ore and steel product

Tata Steel engages with NMDC, OMC to secure iron ore needs for future

Tata Steel has initiated discussions with state-run miners NMDC and Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) to secure future iron ore supplies as the company ramps up its domestic steel manufacturing capacity. Tata Steel will also operationalise two new iron mines namely Kalamang West and Gandalpada as part of its strategy to ensure raw material security, the company's Vice President, Raw Material, D B Sundara Ramam told PTI. At present, Tata Steel meets its entire demand for iron ore, a key raw material used for manufacturing steel, from six iron ore mines operated by the company in Odisha and Jharkhand. Ramam said raw material plan has been carved out as leases of four mines -- Noamundi iron ore mine (being operated since 1925), Katamati and Khondbond (since 1933) and Joda East (1956) -- are expiring in March 2030. While two other mines NINL (Mithirda) and Vijay II will continue to remain operational. The mines came along acquisition of NINL plant and Usha Martin's steel business, he .

Centre asks Telangana govt to auction at least six mineral blocks by Jun 30

The mines ministry has flagged that the Telangana government failed to auction any mineral blocks in past nine years and asked the state to put at least six mines on sale by the end of this month. According to sources, geological reports of eleven blocks have been handed over to the government of Telangana for auction. These blocks consist of five iron ore mines, five limestone blocks and one manganese block. Till date not even a single block has been put up for auction by Telangana even though the mines ministry has sent repeated reminders to the state government. The process of allocating mineral blocks through auctions began in 2015. In a recent letter to the Telangana government, the mines ministry asked the state to notify a minimum of six blocks from the 11 for auction by June 30, sources said. The ministry warned that failure to do so will force the Centre to begin the auction process. As per the amendment in mining rules made in 2021, the Centre has the power to put on sa
