Power outage continues in J&K as employees strike over privatisation

Residents of many cities in Jammu & Kashmir faced power shut down on second consecutive day, as Power Development Department (PDD) employees continued their strike against the proposed privatisation of electricity in the Union Territory. The PDD employees have been on strike since Sunday against the J&K administration decision to privatise the department and merge it with the Power Grid Corporation of India. Jammu University has postponed offline and online examination for undergraduate and postgraduate students tomorrow in view of the strike. The PDD employees held anti-government protests in Srinagar and Jammu demanding in writing from the Lieutenant Governor that it has shelved the proposal of privatisation. According to sources, while the administration parleyed with the PDD employees, it also visited several power distribution facilities in Jammu to speed up restoration of electric supply. Two drones used to carry out attack on Jammu Air Force base, say sources

Two drones were used to carry out an attack inside the Air Force base in Jammu on Sunday, sources said."There is no damage to any aircraft in the blasts. Two personnel suffered minor injuries," they added.Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) informed that two low-intensity explosions were reported early Sunday morning in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Station.One of the blasts caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other exploded in an open area.There was no damage to any equipment, the IAF said.An investigation into the matter is in progress along with civil agencies, it added.

Former union minister and BJP leader Chaman Lal Gupta passes away

Veteran BJP leader and former union minister Chaman Lal Gupta died after a prolonged illness at his Gandhi Nagar residence here on Tuesday, days after undergoing successful treatment for COVID-19 at a hospital, his family said. Gupta (87) is survived by his two sons and a daughter. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 5 and returned from Narayana hospital on Sunday after successful treatment. His condition suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours and he breathed his last around 5.10 am, his elder son Anil Gupta told PTI. Born in Jammu on April 13, 1934, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was not in good health for the last couple of years as he was suffering from various ailments and was hardly seen in public life. The deceased leader had an illustrious political career spanning over five decades after he became a member of the J&K Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1972.
