Trump to meet with striking autoworkers in Michigan, to skip GOP debate

Former President Donald Trump will travel to the battleground state of Michigan next week to meet with striking autoworkers instead of participating in the second Republican presidential debate, a person familiar with his plans said Monday. Trump, who also skipped the first debate last month, has signaled that he is already focused on the 2024 election against President Joe Biden as he maintains a wide lead against his GOP rivals in primary polls. In recent days, he has been leaning hard into the strike, painting himself as sympathetic to the workers and accusing Biden of trying to destroy the car industry by expanding electric cars and other green energy policies. The September 27 trip, first reported by The New York Times, will also include a primetime speech, according to the person familiar with the plans who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity before they were made public. That's the date others in the GOP field will gather at the Ronald Reagan Presidential

Hunter Biden sues IRS over tax info disclosures after agent testimony

Hunter Biden sued the Internal Revenue Service on Monday, alleging that two agents who claimed interference into the case against him wrongly shared his personal tax information amid escalating legal and political struggles as the 2024 election looms. The suit says the agents targeted and sought to embarrass Mr. Biden." Biden says federal whistleblower protections sought by the agents don't include the sharing of confidential information in press interviews and testimony before Congress. The suit comes as a long-running investigation into Hunter Biden continues to unfold against a sharply political backdrop, including an impeachment inquiry aimed at his father, President Joe Biden. Hunter Biden was indicted days ago on federal firearms charges alleging that he lied about his drug use to buy and possess a gun in October 2018. His defense attorneys have indicated they plan to fight the charges. The case could be on track toward a possible high-stakes trial as the 2024 election ...

UAW strike: Cracks between Biden's goals of tackling climate change, unions

Two of President Joe Biden's top goals fighting climate change and expanding the middle class by supporting unions are colliding in the key battleground state of Michigan as the United Auto Workers go on strike against the country's biggest car companies. The strike involves 13,000 workers so far, less than one-tenth of the union's total membership, but it's a sharp test of Biden's ability to hold together an expansive and discordant political coalition while running for reelection. Biden is trying to turbocharge the market for electric vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent China from solidifying its grip on a growing industry. His signature legislation, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, includes billions of dollars in incentives to get more clean cars on the roads. Some in the UAW fear the transition will cost jobs because electric vehicles require fewer people to assemble. Although there will be new opportunities in the production of high-capacity batteries

Workers strike at all 3 Detroit automakers, to squeeze cos for better pay

Nearly one in 10 of America's unionized auto workers went on strike Friday to pressure Detroit's three automakers into raising wages in an era of big profits and as the industry begins a costly transition from gas guzzlers to electric vehicles. By striking simultaneously at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler owner Stellantis for the first time in its history, the United Auto Workers union is trying to inflict a new kind of pain on the companies in hopes of clawing back some pay and benefits workers gave up in recent decades. The strikes are limited for now to three assembly plants: a GM factory in Wentzville, Missouri, a Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, near Detroit, and a Jeep plant run by Stellantis in Toledo, Ohio. The workers received support from President Joe Biden, who dispatched aides to Detroit to help resolve the impasse and said the Big 3 automakers should share their record profits. Union President Shawn Fain says more plants could be added if the companies don't come up w

US SC pauses order curbing Biden admin efforts to block social media posts

The US Supreme Court on Thursday temporarily blocked a lower court order curbing Biden administration efforts to combat controversial social media posts on topics including COVID-19 and election security. White House communications staffers, the surgeon general and the FBI are among those affected by the order, which resulted from a lawsuit claiming the White House and executive branch agencies unconstitutionally squelched conservative points of view. The administration asked the Supreme Court to put the order on hold while it prepares an appeal. The lower court order was to take effect Monday. Thursday's Supreme Court order delays the effective date until September 22. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit have until Wednesday to file a response. A federal judge in north Louisiana previously issued a sweeping order on July 4 that effectively blocked multiple government agencies from contacting platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to urge that content be removed. Biden WH strategy for impeachment inquiry: Dismiss. Compartmentalize. Scold

On Capitol Hill, House Republicans were all-in Wednesday on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's announcement of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Down Pennsylvania Avenue, the president was holding forth at the White House on the importance of bipartisanship in fighting cancer and ignoring shouted questions about impeachment. It was a clear sign of Biden's broader reelection pitch: the idea that if he simply does his job and governs, Americans will see the results and reward him with four more years. Never mind all that pesky impeachment talk across town. Just an hour earlier, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had dismissed the inquiry as a political stunt and deflected questions about the details to the White House Counsel's Office. House Republicans? We think they should work with us on legitimate issues things that actually matter to the American people," she said. The we're-all-better-than-this attitude is central to the White House strategy for counter

NYC pension funds, state of Oregon sue Fox over 2020 election coverage

New York City's pension funds and the state of Oregon sued Fox Corporation on Tuesday, alleging the company harmed investors by allowing Fox News to broadcast falsehoods about the 2020 election that exposed the network to defamation lawsuits. The case, filed in Delaware, accuses the company of inviting defamation lawsuits through its amplification of conspiracy theories about the election, including a case Fox News agreed to settle for nearly USD 800 million with the voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems. Fox's board of directors has blatantly disregarded the need for journalistic standards and failed to put safeguards in place despite having a business model that invites defamation litigation, said New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who manages the city's pension funds. A spokesperson for Fox Corporation declined to comment. New York City's pension funds are long-term shareholders of Fox Corporation, with shares valued at USD 28.1 million as of the end of July. Speaker McCarthy directs US House to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden

Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Tuesday he is directing the US House to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his family's business dealings, launching historic proceedings ahead of the 2024 election. McCarthy said that House investigations so far "paint a picture of a culture of corruption around the Biden family as Republicans probe the business dealings of the president's son, Hunter Biden, from before the Democratic president took office. These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives, McCarthy, R-Calif., said at the Capitol, announcing that he was directing the House led by the Oversight Committee "to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The White House shot back, calling the action in the midst of the presidential campaign extreme politics at its worst. House Republicans have been investigating the president for nine months, and they've .

Biden plan would overhaul 151-year-old mining law, make firms pay royalties

The Biden administration is recommending changes to a 151-year-old law that governs mining for copper, gold and other hardrock minerals on US-owned lands, including making companies for the first time pay royalties on what they extract. A plan led by the Interior Department also calls for the creation of a mine leasing system and coordination of permitting efforts among a range of federal agencies. This comes as The White House has been pushing to boost domestic mining for minerals needed for electric vehicles, solar panels and other clean energy. Under terms of an 1872 law, the US does not collect royalties on minerals extracted from federal lands, a fact Democratic lawmakers and environmental groups have long lamented. The White House plan would impose a variable 4 per cent to 8 per cent net royalty on hardrock minerals produced on federal lands. The proposal needs approval by Congress unlikely when the House is controlled by Republicans who have long opposed such fees. Undeterr

US outreach to Vietnam about providing stability, says President Biden

President Joe Biden said Sunday his visit to Vietnam to showcase stronger ties with Hanoi was not about trying to start a cold war with China, but rather was part of a broader effort to provide global stability by building US relationships throughout Asia at a time of tensions with Beijing. It's not about containing China, Biden said at a news conference in Vietnam's capital after attending the Group of 20 summit in India. It's about having a stable base. The American president came to Hanoi as Vietnam was elevating the United States to its highest diplomatic status, comprehensive strategic partner. That is evidence of how far the relationship has evolved from what Biden referred to as the bitter past of the Vietnam War. The expanded partnership reflects a broader effort across Asia to counter China's influence. Biden has said Vietnam wants to flex a degree of independence, and U.S. companies are seeking an alternative to imports from Chinese factories. He is pursuing possible allie
