Congress intensifies PayCM campaign in Karnataka, party stalwart arrested

The Congress on Friday intensified its campaign targeting Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai with the top party leaders putting up 'PayCM posters' at public places ignoring state government's direction to investigate the matter. The Chief Minister hit back saying that the Congress has no moral right to speak about corruption. Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, state Congress chief D K Shivakumar, All India Congress Committee general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala and several senior MLAs and others participated in the campaign. Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would participate in the Karnataka leg of the "Bharat Jodo Yatra" led by Rahul Gandhi that will be entering the state on September 30, state party chief D K Shivakumar said on Friday. SC stays proceedings against B S Yediyurappa in alleged corruption case

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed proceedings against former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa in an alleged corruption case. A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli issued notice to the private complainant on a plea challenging the Karnataka High Court order restoring the complaint against Yediyurappa and others. "There shall be a stay of proceedings so far as the petitioner is concerned," the bench said. The Karnataka High Court on September 7 had restored a private complaint against Yediyurappa and his family members. The complainant had accused him of taking bribe for awarding government contracts. A Sessions court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking a probe into the allegations of corruption against Yediyurappa as the then Governor had refused to sanction it. Exide's Li-ion cell plant in Karnataka to be ready in 27-30 months

Lead-acid battery major Exide Industries on Thursday said the first phase of its 6Gwh lithium-ion battery plant in Karnataka will be ready in 27-30 months, and it has lined up Rs 3,800-4,000 crore investment to execute the project. The project, spread over 80 acres, will expand to become a 12-Gwh (Gigawatt hour) capacity integrated lithium-ion battery facility involving a total investment of Rs 6,000 crore, and it will take 8-10 years to reach its peak capacity. "The first phase of 6 Gwh capacity cell making facility including modules in Karnataka will be ready in 27-30 months and will require an investment of Rs 3,800-4,000 crore. Funding will in a combination of internal accruals and bridge loans. Karnataka hijab ban: SC reserves verdict on pleas challenging HC judgement

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state. On March 15, the high court had dismissed petitions filed by a section of Muslim students from the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom, saying it is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islamic faith. The state government had, by its order of February 5, 2022, banned wearing clothes that disturb equality, integrity, and public order in schools and colleges. Several pleas have been filed in the apex court challenging the high court verdict. A bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia reserved its verdict in the matter.

'PayCM' posters with CM's photo surface in Bengaluru, Bommai orders inquiry

"PayCM' posters with the photo of the Karnataka Chief Minister surfaced in several parts of the city on Wednesday, following which an angry Basavaraj Bommai ordered an inquiry. He also dubbed it a 'pseudo campaign,' which not only maligns his image but also of Karnataka. "It is a systematic conspiracy to spoil my name and also Karnataka. I have directed the officials concerned to book a case. We will get it investigated to find out the people behind it," Bommai told reporters here. "This is a baseless campaign in social media. Everyone knows how to do such things. Also, people know who is running the campaign. These are pseudo campaigns, which have intensified only recently. This has no value," he added. The CM said he is hurt because more than him, Karnataka is getting a bad name due to such a campaign. "So, we have decided to put a brake on such activities," Bommai said. Mangaluru Dasara celebrations to begin from Sept 26 at Gokarnanatha temple

The Mangaluru Dasara festival will be celebrated at the Kudroli Gokarnanatha temple from September 26 to October 6, former Union Minister B Janaradhan Poojary, patron of the temple, has said. This year's celebrations will be unique as the festival could not be held during the previous two years on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, he told reporters here on Sunday. Discoms outstanding late payment surcharge dues dip sharply to Rs 713 cr

Outstanding dues of power distribution companies towards gencos declined sharply to Rs 713.29 crore on Friday from Rs 5,085.30 crore as of August 17 following a strict action against defaulter utilities. The defaulter utilities were barred from trading at power exchanges under the Electricity (Late Payment Surcharge and related matters), Rules 2022 notified by the power ministry in June 2022. Last month, the national grid operator Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO) asked three power exchanges -- IEX, PXIL and HPX -- to restrict electricity trading by 27 discoms in 13 states having outstanding dues towards gencos. The latest update regarding late payment surcharge dues on PRAAPTI portal showed that three discoms in Karnataka and one in Jammu & Kashmir have total outstanding dues of Rs 713.29 crore on September 16, 2022. Lokayukta police registers case against Yediyurappa, family members

The Lokayukta police in Karnataka have registered a case against former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and several members of his family in connection with a corruption case. The case was registered on Friday following a special court direction to the Lokayukta police to book the senior BJP leader and his kin, including his son B Y Vijayendra, who is the BJP state vice president, his grandson and the then BDA commissioner. The FIR was registered under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal on a complaint by a social activist T J Abraham, alleging that the accused obtained bribes in return for granting BDA (Bangalore Development Authority) contracts. The case pertains to awarding tender for the construction of BDA apartments at Konadasapura in Bidarahalli in the city. It is alleged that the accused took kickbacks from a builder, which were routed through shell companies owned by them, when Yediyurappa was the Chief Minister from 2019 to 2021.

Rs 3,000 cr earmarked in budget for Kalyana Karnataka region, says Bommai

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said funds worth Rs 3,000 crore set aside in the budget for the historically-backward Kalyana Karnataka region would help in the development of this part of the state. Speaking after hoisting the flag on the occasion of Amrit Mahotsav of Kalyana Karnataka region, Bommai said the state government is encouraging industries to set up their units in the region. "Consequent to the amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution, the incumbent government, for the first time, has released the entire funds to Kalyana Karnataka Development Board.
