Integrated industrial township to be developed in 970 acres near KGF

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said his government will ensure the development of an integrated industrial township in over 970 acres of land in Kolar district, aimed at prompting industries in the region to provide jobs for locals. The Chief Minister was responding to a question raised by KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) MLA Roopakala M in the legislative assembly during the question hour regarding developing an industrial township in the land the government has taken back from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and alleged delay in transfer of land to Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for the purpose. "There is a proposal to transfer BEML land from Revenue to the Industries Department and to develop it through KIADB. It is difficult to get land around Bengaluru and if we have to acquire land it is costly and those who set up industries will have to bear it. Also the region is deprived of industries despite being so close to Bengaluru." Pointing out .

Karnataka Legislative Council passes contentious 'anti conversion bill'

Karnataka Legislative Council on Thursday passed the contentious "anti conversion bill", amid objections from the opposition Congress and JD(S). The 'Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill' was passed by the Legislative Assembly in December last. As the Bill was pending for passage in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP was short of majority then, the government had subsequently promulgated an ordinance in May this year to give effect to the bill. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra piloted the Bill for the consideration of the Upper House today. Noting that in recent times religious conversions have become widespread, he said there have been mass conversions with allurements and through force, disturbing peace and leading to mistrust among people following different religions. The Bill does not take away anyone's religious freedom and anyone can practice the religion of his or her choice, but not under pressure and allurements, Jnanendra said. The Minister

Karnataka HC orders FIR, probe against Yediyurappa in corruption case

The Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge court on Wednesday ordered an FIR to be registered and investigation taken up on a private complaint alleging corruption by former Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa and his family members. The order comes exactly a week after the High Court of Karnataka on September 7 directed the Special Court to hear the complaint of corruption afresh. The lower court had on July 8 dismissed the complaint, as the Governor had refused to give sanction to the complainant, T J Abraham. The HC, however, ruled that the complainant was not the competent authority to seek sanction from the Governor. The complaint is against Yediyurappa, the then chief minister, and his family members, alleging that they obtained bribes in return for granting BDA (Bangalore Development Authority) contracts. Reacting to the order, Yediyurappa said he has full confidence in the judiciary. "There is no truth in any of these allegations. I will come out of all these (case

Karnataka Hijab ban: SC asks about authentic figure on dropout of students

The Supreme Court Wednesday asked whether there is any authentic figure regarding dropping out of students from educational institutions in Karnataka because of the Hijab ban and the subsequent judgement by the high court on the issue. "Do you have those authentic figures that because of this Hijab ban and the subsequent judgement of the high court, 20, 30, 40 or 50 students have dropped out?," a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia asked after the counsel appearing for one of the petitioners raised the issue of students, especially girls, dropping out of school. Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, representing one of the petitioners, referred to a report and said it has testimonies of several students. "My friend (one of the lawyers) informed me that 17,000 students had really abstained from the exams after this particular judgement," he said to the bench hearing arguments on a batch of pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court verdict refusing to lift the ban on hijab i

Also, the master plan for stormwater drains is being redrawn to increase its capacity, he said. "Work on developing stormwater drains across the city is underway and the work will continue without any break. H D Kumaraswamy urges Karnataka govt to not celebrate 'Hindi Diwas'

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has written a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday, urging his government not to celebrate 'Hindi Diwas' by utilising the taxpayers' money. The former Chief Minister said that forcefully celebrating Hindi Diwas, which happens to be on September 14, would amount to "injustice" to the people of Karnataka. "Celebrating the Union government-sponsored Hindi Diwas programme on September 14, forcefully in Karnataka, will be an injustice to Kannadigas by the State government. I urge that for no reason Karnataka government should celebrate Hindi Diwas by utilising the State's taxpayers' money," Kumaraswamy said in his letter. Noting that thousands of languages and dialects, over 560 princely States, and diverse social and cultural practices make India a "great union", he said, "In such a land, celebrating one particular language is injustice..." Earlier, Kumaraswamy had opposed the Hindi Diwas celebrations, stating that it holds no meani

Siddaramaiah challenges K'taka CM Bommai for open discussion on corruption

Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Sunday challenged Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai for an open discussion on corruption at the time and venue of his choice. Calling the present administration as a "40 per cent sarakar" filled with "looters and scamsters", the former Chief Minister, in a series of tweets, pointing out that BJP leaders claiming that they will expose scandals of his government, challenged them to do so. Siddaramaiah was reacting to the ruling BJP leaders on Saturday going after him at their party's massive 'Janaspandana' rally in Doddaballapur. In a fierce speech, Bommai had even said that the real face of the Congress will be out in the days to come and all of Siddaramaiah's scams will be exposed soon. "Let Bommai first clean his own house. 40 per cent sarakar is filled with looters and scamsters. Bommai, I challenge you for an open discussion on corruption. We are always ready. You fix the time and venue, and we will come," Siddaramaiah said. "BJP

Public angst over rain havoc weighs on parties as polls near in Karnataka

With torrential rains in Bengaluru exposing its infrastructure woes, sitting legislators from the city and their political parties seem to be a worried lot over the electoral prospects, amid fears of anti-incumbency and public angst turning against them. Assembly polls are barely seven months away, and elections to the city civic body the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are expected later this year. The downpour and deluge caused by it resulted in large-scale destruction and misery, affecting the normal life of people, with some complaining that the "brand Bengaluru" has taking a hit. The famed IT industry bore the brunt of the rain fury; there seems to be palpable anger among a section of citizens who felt let down by the political class during the crisis. According to some political observers and party insiders, this fear seems to be more within the ruling BJP, as the state government is being directly held responsible for the mess, in the absence of the city civic body
