Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai on Thursday met Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and requested him to supply 5 lakh doses of Covid vaccine daily to the state. In the meeting, Bommai updated the Union minister on measures taken to control spread of the pandemic. "I informed that the state has planned 5 lakh a day vaccination programme from next month. And the minister has assured support to meet the demand of the programme," Bommai told reporters after the meeting. Mandaviya informed that the Centre will give more doses of vaccines from September-October onwards to all states, including Karnataka, he said, adding that the state will start preparing for this programme immediately. Earlier, the Centre had provided 3.5 lakh doses of vaccine a day. Last week, it was increased to 4-4.5 lakh doses a day. "Yesterday, we touched 5 lakh doses a day. Medical student from Uttar Pradesh gang raped in Mysuru; CM orders probe

A medical student studying in a private college here was allegedly gang-raped by unidentified people on the outskirts of the city near Lalitadripura, police said on Wednesday. The student, riding pillion with her male friend, was on her way to Chamundi Hills when a few people waylaid them on Tuesday. The gang initially demanded money, but when they found nothing, attacked her friend and dragged her to a place where they committed the crime, police said. The victim has been admitted to a hospital. Based on her complaint, a case of gang-rape has been registered against unknown people, police added. The Mysuru police commissioner Dr Chandragupta visited the spot and formed multiple teams to probe the case. Karnataka coronavirus update: 1,632 new cases and 25 deaths in 24 hours

Karnataka on Saturday logged 1,632 fresh COVID-19 cases and 25 deaths taking the total infections and fatalities to 29,28,033 and 36,958, the health department said. There were 22,695 active cases in the state while the recovery of 1,612 patients took the total recoveries to 28,68,351. The positivity rate for the day was 1.04 per cent and case fatality rate 1.53 per cent, the department said. Dakshina Kannada district, which borders Kerala, remained the major COVID-19 hotspot. The district reported a maximum of 411 infections and seven fatalities, which was highest among all the districts. Bengaluru urban district recorded 377 fresh infections and one death. The Karnataka capital has so far reported 12,32,597 infections and 15,934 deaths. There were 8,200 active cases. Other districts too reported new COVID-19 cases including 169 in Udupi, 112 in Mysuru, 97 in Hassan, 60 in Shivamogga and 53 in Chikkamagaluru.
