Man held for attempt to murder in J K's Samba

A man, wanted in an attempt to murder case, was arrested in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. Vijay Kumar was arrested following a raid in Vijay Pur town, they said. In another case, Bhupinder Singh, absconding since 2000, was arrested in the Hatli area of Kathua district, police said. Singh was booked in a case of wrong restraint, causing hurt with dangerous weapon and unlawful assembly, they said.

Shah deposition doesn't support defence in riot case: Lawyer

BJP president Amit Shah's deposition for former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, an accused in the 2002 Naroda Gam riot case, supports testimonies of prosecution witnesses who said she was seen in the affected area on the day of rioting, victims' lawyer told a court today. In a written argument submitted in a special court presided over by judge M K Dave, the victims' lawyer, Shamshad Pathan, said while Shah was brought in as a defence witness, his deposition does not support the defence in the riot case. He said Shah's deposition does not support either Kodnani, an former BJP MLA, or others who "conspired" for the riot at Naroda Gam, a suburb of Ahmedabad, which broke out in the aftermath of the torching of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra. Woman kills 3-month old son, self in TN

A 25-year old woman allegedly killed her three-month old baby boy by setting him on fire before committing self-immolation in the district today, police said. Thenmozhi immolated herself and the child by using kerosene in a room in her parent's house at Thookanaickken Palayam village this morning. Hearing cries, others in the house rushed and saw the two engulfed in flames. After dousing the flames, they rushed the woman and child to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. The motive for the woman taking the extreme step was under investigation, police said. She had been staying at her parent's house since giving birth to the boy.

Triple talaq against Indian Constitution: Shabana Azmi

Noted film actress Shabana Azmi today said triple talaq is against the Indian Constitution and welcomed a proposed law that makes the practice of instant divorce illegal. Teenage girl gang raped in Mau

A teenage girl was allegedly gang raped at a madrasa in Ghosi area, here, the police said today. As per the FIR, registered by the victim's mother, the incident took place on August 4 when the madrasa manager's brother and four others held the 16-year-old captive and raped her, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shailesh Kumar Srivastava said. He added that the main accused has been arrested and hunt is on to nab the rest. SC refuses to entertain PIL seeking 'Citizen Charter'

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to provide a "Citizen Charter' and appoint a grievance redressal officer in every department to ensure smooth delivery of services and goods to the people. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked 'Bhartiya Matdata Sanghathan', a charitable organisation which had filed the public interest litigation (PIL), to approach the government with its plea. The organisation, in its PIL filed through advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, had sought a direction to the central government to provide a 'Citizen Charter' in each department, besides seeking notification of a "Grievance Redressal Officer" in every department. The plea said "the right to time-bound service, goods and redressal of grievances" was an integral part of right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. Chinese among six held for smuggling gold at Delhi airport

Six people, including a Chinese national, have been arrested by customs officials at the airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle 3.1 kg gold worth nearly Rs one crore into the country, an official statement said today. The accused were held in separate incidents of gold smuggling reported over the past three days at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Four Indians, including two women, were intercepted after their arrival from Bangkok yesterday, the statement said. A detailed personal and baggage search resulted in recovery of multiple gold rods, crudely given the shape of bangles and collectively weighing 1.4 kgs, from them, it said, adding that the value of the seized gold was ascertained to be Rs 43.6 lakh. Madras HC issues notice to Sterlite on plea seeking Rs 750 cr compensation

The Madras High Court today issued a notice to the Vedanta group's Sterlite copper plant on a petition seeking Rs 750 crore towards rehabilitation of people affected by pollution allegedly caused by it and relief for victims of the police firing during a protest in May. Petitioner Vijaya Nivas sought a court direction to the company to pay Rs 620 crore for rehabilitation of people in and around its plant in Tuticorin, apart from a compensation of Rs 10 crore each for the 13 people killed in police firing during the anti-Sterlite agitation on May 22 and 23. When the matter came up for hearing, Justices M M Sundaresh and Satheesh Kumar issued notices to Sterlite Copper chairman Anil Agarwal and the central and state governments. DU moves HC against order asking law faculty to conduct extra classes

The Delhi University today approached the high court here challenging a single judge's order asking the law faculty members to conduct at least 139 hours of extra classes/tutorials for those students who are desirous to attend the lectures to make up for attendance shortage. The single judge had come down heavily on the Delhi University law teachers for "illegally" detaining around 500 students for lack of attendance and ordered holding of supplementary exams, saying it was a "failure" of the faculty. A Delhi High Court bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar issued notice to the students today and sought their response on the university's appeal against the order. Muzaffarpur shelter home case: 3 cops suspended

Three cops posted at the Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Jail have been suspended following recovery of two pages from Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case accused Brajesh Thakur. The seized two pages contain over 40 phone numbers, including that of a Bihar Minister.The recovery was made after police conducted a surprise check at the prison, where Thakur is lodged.Brajesh Thakur is the main accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, where more than 30 minor girls were sexually assaulted over a period of time. Eleven employees of the shelter home were arrested for harassing a number of girls residing at the facility.Earlier, on August 11 Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Thakur's son after questioning him in connection with the case. The investigative agency had also froze Brajesh Thakur's bank accounts and also investigated his properties and bank balance. Sex racket busted, 3 women rescued, 4 arrested in Maha's Thane

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly running a sex racket in Bhayander in Maharashtra's Thane district and three women were rescued during a raid conducted at the lodge from where it was being operated, police said today. Based on a tip-off, the Uttan coastal police raided a lodge in the early hours of Sunday and arrested Sharad Shetty, Vasusingh Sandhu, Shivprasad Shetty and Akhil Dafedar for operating the racket, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Atul Kulkarni of the Thane Rural police. Before carrying out the raid, police had sent a decoy customer to ensure that the tip-off was correct, an official said. Kulkarni said that the four had been charged under relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act while the rescued women were sent to rescue homes. The official added that the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of the police were carrying out further investigations into the case.

A Haryana court today sentenced 23 people to life imprisonment for murdering a youth in December 2012. Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hisar, Pankaj awarded the life sentence to the 23 convicts for murdering Sandeep, hailing village Chanaut here. Guj to bring ordinance with longer jail terms for chain

The Gujarat government will bring an ordinance to amend Section 379 of the IPC to allow jail terms between seven to ten years for chain snatchers instead of a maximum punishment of three years at present, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said today. He said that the maximum jail term of three years handed out under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code at present was not proving effective in stopping cases of chain and purse snatching. He said that the state Cabinet under Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had approved the proposal to insert two new provisions in section 379 of the IPC "to provide safety and security to people, especially women, as chain snatchers usually target them at public places". "We will insert two new sub sections - 379(a) and 379(b) - in the IPC section 379 by bringing an ordinance. It will be sent to the Governor in the coming days for his approval" Jadeja told reporters in Gandhinagar today. "As per sub section 379(a), those found guilty .

Two sisters die after falling from ferris wheel in Ambala

Two sisters died after falling off a ferris wheel from a height of 45 feet when the their seat overturned unexpectedly, police said today. Anjli (18) and Deepmala (25), along with a few members of their family, had gone to ride the ferris wheel on the occasion of Teej festival at Hathikhana Temple ground in Ambala cantonment yesterday evening, they said. The sisters sat on a two-seater car of the giant ferris wheel and they fell on the ground when it overturned. They were taken to civil hospital with serious head injuries and were declared brought dead by doctors there, police said. After the incident, the manager of the fair fled. Justice Manjula Chellur takes oath as APTEL Chairperson

Justice Manjula Chellur today took oath as Chairperson of Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), the Power Ministry said today. Prior to this, Justice Chellur was Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, the ministry said. She was the first woman Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. Justice chellur also served as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and the first female judge of the Karnataka High Court.
