A youth was shot at by some motorcycle-borne assailants here today, police said. Gurkirtan Singh, a resident of Killin Village, was grievously injured in the incident as he received bullet injuries on his legs, they said. The incident took place when Gurkirtan had come to a private hospital to meet a relative. The accused -- Sucha Bhattia and Sunil Naughty -- had enmity with Gurkirtan's friend Sandeep, DSP (city) Yadwinder Singh Bajwa said, adding the accused wanted to take revenge from him due to which they attacked Gurkiratan. The DSP said the police was trying to identify the third accomplice. "The police is scrutinizing the CCTV footage and police teams have been sent to nab the accused," he said, adding a case has been registered against them under relevant provisions of the law.
The Punjab Police today arrested 11 members of the Devinder Bambiha gang and seized 17 weapons from their possession, an official said. The arrested accused were involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, snatching of vehicles, drug smuggling, dealing in illegal weapons besides armed robberies and theft, IGP (Intelligence) Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said here. They were identified as Aman Kumar, Yadwinder Singh, Varinderpal Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Rajat Kumar, Karan Mangla, Sukha, Palwinder Singh, Sumit Bajaj, Alam Bhattal and Lakhwinder Singh. The official said nine pistols, five revolvers, one rifle and 2 guns were seized from their possession. Besides, the police have also seized three cars from their possession. All the accused persons were produced before a local court which remanded them to six-day police custody, he said.
The Supreme Court today allowed the demolition of illegal structures at the residential property jointly owned by controversial sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt and his wife in Ahmedabad. The top court, refused to interfere with the Gujarat High Court order directing Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to demolish the illegal constructions. In an apparent case of moral policing, a group of people attacked a man who was found talking to a woman from another community near here, police said today. Suresh was injured in he attack and treated as an outpatient at a government hospital, police said. An eight-member group, who found Suresh talking to a burqa-clad woman near the bus stand yesterday, objected to it, they said. The man, belonging to Farangipet, was proceeding to Mangaluru from Bantwal when he met the woman and exchanged pleasantries. As he proceeded in his car, the group waylaid the vehicle and attacked him besides hurling abuses, police said. Suresh later lodged a complaint and a case has been registered at the Bantwal rural police station. The Delhi High Court was today told that over Rs 15 crore collected since 2006 from wages of convicts lodged in Tihar Jail for welfare of their victims has been lying unutilised. The submission was made before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar by the prison authorities during hearing of a PIL challenging the practice of deducting 25 per cent of the convicts' wages towards a victim welfare fund. The Director General of Prisons in an affidavit has said there is no need to withdraw the victim compensation scheme being operated by it as similar schemes of the Centre and Delhi government were meant to supplement each other and not replace one another. The prison has also said that till date it has held 12 meetings and approximately Rs 80.73 lakh has been disbursed to 194 eligible victims. It has opposed the PIL which has sought quashing of an August 2006 notification and the Delhi Prison Rules of 1988 which mandate deduction of wages of prisoners. The ..

A crucial bill seeking to provide death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years was passed by the Lok Sabha today. The bill seeks to replace the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21, following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. Although the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 was supported by most members across the political spectrum and passed by a voice vote, some in the Opposition objected to the government adopting the ordinance route to enact the law. Several amendments moved by the opposition members were also negated by voice vote. A 28-year-old man was allegedly killed by his paramour's brother in Basadi village of Baran district in Rajasthan, a police official said today. The main accused in the case has been arrested. The deceased was identified as Anand Meena alias Dholiya, a resident of Basadi village. He was allegedly in an illicit relationship with the main accused's sister (35), who is a married woman. On Sunday, Meena went to a drinking party at his paramour's house, which was attended by the woman's husband Nandkishore (50), brother Budhiprakesh (26), and son Kishanmurari. Civic officials started today razing illegal construction at dismissed Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's residence here, hours after the Supreme Court rejected a plea seeking a stay on its demolition. A 14-year-old girl died of electrocution after a high tension wire snapped and fell on her in Bihar's Katihar district today, police said. The deceased has been identified as Lakshmi Kumari, a class 8 student of Kasturba residential girls school located at Bastaul in the district, Pranpur police station SHO, Anupam said. The incident occurred at around 5 am when the girl had gone out to pluck flowers and the 11,000 kv live wire snapped and fell on her on Bastaul-Sanauli main road, the SHO said adding that the body has been sent to Katihar sadar hospital for post-mortem. After getting the information, District Magistrate Punam reached the hospital and inquired about the incident. The DM suspended the in-charge warden of the school Rani Kumari and also directed necessary action against erring school officials. The DM has directed the District Education Officer Dinesh Chandra Deo to probe the matter.
