Dalit woman gangraped in Sonbhadra

A dalit woman was allegedly raped here by four men, the police said today. In the police complaint registered late last night, the 35-year-old Dalit woman said that four men raped her on July 21 after duping by promising her legal aid against her husband and in-laws. "In her complaint, the woman named four persons. Of these two were from her village, while two others were from Raoberstganj (district headquarters of Sonbhadra)," the police said. Superintendent of Police RP Singh said, "Based on the woman's complaint, a case has been registered against the four men under various sections of the IPC and SC/ST Act.

Man sentenced to death for rape, murder of 6-yr-old girl in Punjab

A court in Punjab's Mansa district today awarded death sentence to a man in connection with the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in 2016, describing the case as "rarest of rare". The court of Additional Session Judge Jaspal Verma held accused Kala Ram alias Kala Singh guilty of the abduction, rape and murder of the girl in year 2016, said Jaswant Singh Grewal, the victim's counsel. The judge observed in the order that the faith of the society by such a "barbaric act" of the convict gets totally shaken and its cry for justice becomes loud and clear. "The offence was not only inhumane and barbaric but it was a totally ruthless crime of rape followed by cold-blooded murder. It is an act of taking advantage of absolute innocence. The sexually assaulted minor girl of six years could not have shown any kind of resistance. Lankesh murder probe: Cops come across diary with 'hit-list'

The SIT probing journalist- activist Gauri Lankesh's killing has stumbled upon a diary with a 'hit-list' which has the name of film and theatre personality Girish Karnad's name on top, police said today. Karnad was among the most vocal critics of hardline Hindutva whose security was beefed up following the killing of Lankesh in September last year. Lankesh's name figures second among the intended targets in the diary which was recovered last month from the suspects arrested in connection with her killing. "There is a list of targets prepared by a radical Hindu group. The names of Karnad and Lankesh have been mentioned at slot number 1 and 2. We are investigating further," a member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) said. The entries, he said, have been made in Devnagri script. The names of politician-litterateur B T Lalitha Naik, pontiff Veerabhadra Channamalla Swamy of Nidumamidi Mutt and rationalist C S Dwarakanath also figure in the list. All of them are bitter .

Five Indians arrested for smuggling gold in Nepal

Five Indian nationals were today arrested for being in possession of over 3 kg of smuggled gold, worth whopping Rs 14.7 million, at the international airport here, police said. The accused had concealed the gold in their suitcases' wheels. "This was an innovative idea to smuggle the gold... It has been seen for the first time," said Superintendent of Nepal Police Dinesh Raj Mainali. The security unit at the Tribhuvan International Airport has arrested five Indian nationals with 3.36 kilograms of smuggled gold yesterday. Ishwar Das, Avatar Singh, Amrit Pal Singh, Harmindar Singh and Rijwan Ansari were arrested after they landed at Tribhuvan International Airport via Thai Airways flight from Bangkok, Thailand, according to the police. They had distributed the yellow metal among themselves and concealed it in their suitcases, said Mainali. As per market price, the gold is worth Rs 14.7 million. All the arrestees have been handed over to the customs office for further investigation.

3 sisters found dead under mysterious circumstances in Delhi

Three sisters were found dead under mysterious circumstances in east Delhi's Mandawali area, police said today. They were aged two, four and eight respectively and were declared brought dead by a hospital yesterday, they added. They were brought there by their mother and a neighbour at around 1 pm, and the hospital authorities informed police about their deaths. A board of doctors would conduct a re-examination of the bodies at the GTB hospital, Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (east), said. A forensic team inspected the place where the family was staying and found some medicine bottles and pills, police said. The girls' father, who worked as a casual labourer, is missing since yesterday. No injury marks were found on the bodies, they said, adding that the re-examination would help ascertain whether they were poisoned. Jawan arrested on charge of attempt to rape in S'bad: Police

A 32-year old army personnel has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a teenaged girl after 'assaulting' her boy friend here, police said today. The accused, a jawan posted in the Signal Regimentary in Secunderabad here, was arrested yesterday following a complaint by the 19-year old girl. He was caught after a police constable passing by the area rushed to the spot on hearing cries of the girl. The incident occurred on the night of July 23 when the girl and her friend took shelter under a tree near a hillock as it was raining. Police said the man dragged the girl into nearby bushes after attacking her friend and tried to rape her. When she resisted, her had hit her. FIR tracking via SMS facility launched in Punjab

Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora today launched the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) based SMS service for complainants. As part of the initiative, complainants will now get SMS alerts on their registered mobile numbers regarding registration of FIRs, progress of case and details of investigating officers (IOs). They will also receive the names and contact numbers of IOs through the message facility. Arora said, "SMS alert will be sent to complainants in case of arrest of the accused, change of the IO and submission of challan/final report." He said citizens who wish to receive such SMS alerts should update their mobile numbers during registration of FIRs.

CBI probe can be ordered in Bajrangi murder if UP asks: Centre

The Centre can order a CBI probe into the killing of gangster Munna Bajrangi in Baghpat jail if the Uttar Pradesh government asks for it, though the state government has ordered a judicial probe and taking required action, Union Minister Hansraj Ahir said today. During the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav sought to know if the government would order a CBI probe into the killing. Yadav said Bajrangi's wife had even expressed apprehension before his killing that her husband may be harmed. Earlier, SP member Vishambhar Prasad Nishad had also sought to know whether the Centre would order a CBI probe in the matter. Drug dealer jailed for murder of Indian-origin man in UK

A drug dealer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the "brutal and sustained assault" of an Indian-origin man in Southampton, on England's south coast, in September last year. Adam Abdallah was found guilty of stabbing Kirpal Singh Sanghera in the chest, neck and arms and jailed for life at Winchester Crown Court yesterday. Justice Dingemans told the 43-year-old man that he must serve at least 23 years for the "brutal and sustained assault" before being considered for parole. The court was told that 39-year-old Sanghera and his attacker were involved in the supply of Class A hard drugs and that the killing was the result of a "turf war". Sanghera was discovered with knife wounds on the street and declared dead at Southampton General Hospital in the early hours of September 19, 2017. Illegally stored drug seized, one arrested

The Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) has seized around 5000 ampules of illegally stored buprenorphine drug from Kaliachak area in Malda district and arrested one person, NCB officials said today. Buprenorphine is generally prescribed as a pain killer but it is also classified as narcotic. NCB officials raided a house at Kaliachak last night following a tip off and seized 4971 ampules of buprenorphine, totalling 9.94 litre of the drug which was worth Rs 5 lakh and stored there illegally. Officials said one person was arrested.

All police stations, chowkis to have CCTV cameras: HC told

The city police today told the Delhi High Court that all of its stations and 'chowkis' will have CCTV cameras by mid October as a step towards ensuring more transparency in the agency's functioning. The Delhi Police and the AAP government also told a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar that they will submit a joint report after identifying vulnerable spots in the city where cameras are urgently required. The court was also informed that 3,100 posts of police personnel have been sanctioned for recruitment by the Ministry of Home Affairs. In a status report filed through criminal standing counsel Rajesh Mahajan, the police told the bench that the cameras will be installed by mid October 2018. 40 cases of snatching with foreign tourists reported in last three years: Govt

Forty cases of snatching in which the victims were foreign tourists were registered by the Delhi Police in the last three years, Union Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said today. Till June 30 this year, six such cases were reported in the national capital, he told the Rajya Sabha. In a reply to a question whether there had been a six-fold increase in incidents of snatching in Delhi in the last three years, Ahir said there was a decline of 3.28 and 14 per cent, respectively, in snatching cases registered in 2016 and 2017. This year saw a decline of 28.90 per cent in snatching cases as compared to the last year, he added. In 2015, three cases of snatching in which the victims were foreign tourists were registered by the Delhi Police, whereas the number of such cases stood at 19 and 18, respectively, in 2016 and 2017, the minister of state for home. A 40-year-old policeman was killed and another one was injured in an attack by an absconding accused and his relatives in Jamunia Jeth village in the district early today, police said. The attack took place when the policemen went to catch Jouhar Singh (30), against whom a permanent arrest warrant had been issued in connection with an assault case, police said. Pakistani-American David Headley is neither in a Chicago jail nor in hospital, his lawyer said today, dismissing reports that the LeT terrorist, convicted to 35 years in prison in the 2008 Mumbai attack case, was battling for life after being beaten by fellow inmates. Hry STF arrests two drug peddlers, seizes 5 kg of opium

Two persons were arrested today on charges of drug peddling and five kilogram of opium was seized from them in Haryana's Hisar district, police said today. They were arrested by the state police's Special Task Force (STF) near Bhojraj village in the district. Trafficked 33-yr-old woman rescued in Goa: NCW

The National Commission for Women (NCW) in collaboration with the Goa Police rescued a 33-year-old woman, who was trafficked from Siliguri to the coastal state last month, the women's body said today. The victim's husband, complained to Bhaktinagar Police Station in Siliguri that his wife had been missing since June 21. He further stated that on July 19 his wife called him from a mobile phone, which was later switched off and untraceable. The NCW directed the Goa Police to look into the matter and treat it as high-priority since she had been missing for almost a month, the women's body said. The mobile number, from which the trafficking victim had called, was then put on surveillance and her location was traced.
