"Sorry state of affairs" that WB police obstructing CBI's Saradha scam probe: SC

The Supreme Court today termed the allegation of the West Bengal police obstructing the CBI in its probe into the multi-crore Saradha ponzi scam as "sorry state of affairs" and directed that the probe agency officials should not be summoned for questioning by the state SIT. The top court also observed that due to such obstructions, the prosecution of those accused in the scam was getting delayed. The issue came up when the counsel for CBI made certain allegations which were countered by their counterparts representing the state government. "They (CBI and SIT) are obstructing each other. This is a sorry state of affairs. We are not happy with it. This is not the way things should go on. Whoever is the culprit needs to be booked. It should not be the case that investigating agencies are siding with the accused," a bench of Justices Arun Mishra and S A Abdul Nazeer said. Slain student's family relieved over killing of suspect in US

The family of Sharath Koppu, an Indian student who was killed in Kansas City in America earlier this month, today expressed relief over a suspect in the incident being shot dead. However, the culprit should have been caught and given punishment to realise the pain for having killed an innocent, Prasad Koppu, an uncle of Sharath Koppu, said. "Though it is a happy news that he has been punished (killed), but he should have been caught and brought before law so that he can realise the pain for having killed an innocent," he told PTI. Noting that incidents of robberies and killings were frequently taking place in the United States, he said visiting students should be told about self-defence either by the Indian government or by the concerned college authorities in America. A suspect in the killing of 25-year-old Koppu has been killed in an exchange of fire with the police, leaving three undercover officers injured, US authorities said today. Koppu was fatally shot on July 6 .

Addl Public Prosecutor in ACB net

: an Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau today for allegedly taking Rs 10,000 as bribe. P Sriram Reddy, the Additional Public Prosecutor at the Second Special Sessions Court at L B Nagar Court Complex here was nabbed by ACB officials when he demanded and accepted the Rs 10,000 from an advocate (complainant) for an official favour, an ACB press release said. The amount was recovered from Reddy, it said.

Air hostess suicide: Deceased's husband arrested

The husband of the air hostess, who committed suicide on Friday, was arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday, following an hour-long interrogation.The victim's husband, Mayank Singhvi, was arrested under Section 304 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and is slated to be produced before the magistrate on Tuesday.As per the police, the deceased air hostess, Anissia Batra, had a fight with her husband around 4:30 pm on Friday, after which she went to the terrace and jumped off.Deputy Commissioner of Police, Romil Baniya, said a full-fledged investigation has been launched in connection with the case under Hauz Khas Police Station limits."In the investigation, so far it has been found on June 27 the couple had a fight. They gave a complaint to the police station. It was a one-and-a-half page long. That complaint mentioned that if anything happens to Anissia, her husband would be responsible," he said at a press conference here.The police also stated that parents of the deceased have accused .

Undertrial prisoner shot dead in East Champaran court

An undertrial prisoner was today shot dead in Sikarahna sub-divisional court premises in Bihar's East Champaran district by bike borne gangsters who had come to help him flee, police said. The undertrial, identified as Abhishek Jha and aged around 30, had already been convicted in a murder case, the deputy superintendent of police Alok Kumar Singh said. He was rushed to a hospital at Motihari where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. The incident took place when the undertrial prisoner, a resident of Sheohar district, was being taken to the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate at Sikarahna for production in a case relating to extortion, the DSP said. The prisoner had thrown chilly powder into the eyes of the police personnel who were accompanying him to escape from the clutches of the police personnel accompanying him, he said. Sebi fines an individual Rs 5L for non-compliance

Markets regulator Sebi today imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh on one Chandrakant A Parekh for failing to comply with its earlier directive to disgorge amount of unlawful gain. The market watchdog also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Steel City Securities Ltd for violating code of conduct for stock brokers, according to an order. In Parekh case, Sebi had passed an order in May 2010 directing the individual to disgorge unlawful gain of nearly Rs 24.30 lakh along with interest amounting to Rs 6.55 lakh, totalling over Rs 30.85 lakh, and restrained him from buying, selling or dealing in the securities market for a period of one year. Parekh had appealed against the order in the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) and consequently in Supreme court. The appeal was dismissed by the SAT and further by the Supreme court, thus Parekh was bound to comply with regulator's order of May, 2010, Sebi said in an order. However, a notice was again sent to Parekh in May 2018 for failure to comply with the .

Female lawyer rape: Delhi HC acting chief justice holds meeting to discuss issue

Concerned over the alleged rape of a female lawyer by her senior colleague in his chamber at the Saket district court here, Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal today held a meeting to discuss the issue. Justice Mittal called a meeting of the Administrative Committee of the Delhi High Court, district and sessions judges, Registrar General and Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court today morning to discuss the situation, a source in the acting chief justice's secretariat said. After the meeting, the high court issued directions to judges of the district courts to improve the safety of women in all courts, the source said. According to police, the victim in her statement has said that the accused, who was in an inebriated condition, had sexually assaulted her in his chamber on July 14. Sohrabuddin case: HC completes hearing on 5 revision petitions

The Bombay High Court concluded today the hearing on the five revision petitions challenging the discharge granted to senior Gujarat and Rajasthan police officials in the alleged fake encounter cases of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife Kausar Bi and their aide Tulsiram Prajapati. The high court reserved its judgement after completing the hearing. A single bench, presided over by Justice A M Badar, was conducting hearing on a daily basis on the five revision pleas since July 4 this year. Sohrabuddin Shaikh's brother Rubabuddin Shaikh has filed three of these five pleas, challenging the discharge granted in the case by the trial court to Rajkumar Pandian, and Dinesh M N, IPS officers from the Rajasthan Police, and to former Gujarat ATS chief D G Vanzara. Female flight attendant suicide: Delhi Police arrests husband

The husband of the female flight attendant who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park on Friday was arrested today, hours after the Delhi Police issued a lookout circular against him in connection with the case. Anissia Batra (39) worked with a German airline. She allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house on Friday. Her husband rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Anissia's family has alleged that her husband used to physically abuse her. He was interrogated for an hour and was later arrested this evening. Pak court to take up Sharif family's appeals challenging corruption verdict tomorrow

Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law today filed separate appeals challenging the verdict in a corruption case and the Islamabad High Court issued an urgent cause list to hear them tomorrow. Sharif, 68, and his daughter Maryam, 44, were arrested in Lahore on July 13 on their arrival from London after an accountability court found them guilty over his family's ownership of four luxury flats in London. They were later taken to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Sharif's son-in-law, Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, who was arrested on July 8, is also lodged in the same Adiala Jail. Seven separate appeals were filed in the Islamabad High Court by the three convicts' lawyers - three on behalf of Sharif, and two each on behalf of Maryam and Safdar - on the corruption cases against them. 3 members of Kuki gang nabbed in Haryana

Three people belonging to the Kuki gang were arrested following a brief encounter with the Haryana Police in Jind district today, an official said. The police have seized three pistols and eight live cartridges from their possession, he said. All the three accused were allegedly involved in various cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery, he said. At least, 18 cases were registered against them in the states of Rajasthan and Punjab as well as in Panchkula, Panipat and Rohtak, the official said. Law Minister bats for accountability in the judiciary

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today pitched for accountability in the judiciary, saying it will help judges find out whether the system is in order. Opaquely, he said the government would have no role in judicial accountability. "Independent judiciary is important for a democracy. The job of the government is to provide infrastructure to the judiciary. But the right to run the judiciary should rest with the judiciary itself," he said. Delivering a lecture here, he said if there is a need for accountability in all forms of government, "there is also a need for considering the possibility of accountability among the judiciary as to how the system is working, do we need to expedite it, do we need to explore extra avenues". The Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill was earlier brought by the previous UPA government but had lapsed following the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha in 2014. The lapsed bill provided for a comprehensive mechanism for handling complaints made by citizens .

CBI chargesheets Farooq Abdullah, three others in JKCA scam

The CBI today filed a charge sheet against former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and three others for allegedly misappropriating over Rs 43 crore from grants given by the BCCI to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association for promoting cricket in the state between 2002 to 2011. In its charge sheet filed in a special court here, the CBI alleged that Abdullah as the association president at that time had connived with the treasurer of JKCA and others for undue siphoning off and misappropriation of funds, a CBI spokesperson said in New Delhi. The CBI has charged Abdullah and three others -- the then JKCA general secretary Md Saleem Khan and the then treasurer Ahsan Ahmad Mirza, as also J&K Bank executive Bashir Ahmad Misgar -- under Ranbir Penal Code provisions related to criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust. Three held for raping, burning woman alive in UP, 2 accused still absconding

Three of the five people accused of burning a woman alive after allegedly raping her in Sambhal district's Rajpura area have been arrested, the police said today. The woman was allegedly burnt alive inside the premises of a temple after she was raped by five people in her house on Saturday. "Three of the five accused in the case have been arrested," ADG, Bareilly Zone, Prem Prakash, said. 4 arrested with narcotics in separate incidents in Haryana

Four suspected drug peddlers were arrested today in separate incidents and two kg of opium and 10 kg of 'Doda Post' were seized from their possession, an official said. Acting on the directives of DGP B S Sandhu, a crackdown was launched against smuggling of narcotics in Haryana's Sirsa district and especially in the areas bordering Rajasthan and Punjab. Among the accused was Sanjay Kumar whose wife is a 'sarpanch' of Khuian Malkana village, the official said. The crime investigation agency of Sirsa arrested Mohan Lal of Jodhpur district in Rajasthan and Gurdeep Singh, a native of Khuian Malkana, and seized two kg of opium worth Rs 6 lakh from their car in Dabwali area, he said. In another incident, police arrested a person carrying 10 kg of 'Doda Post' in Sirsa, he said. The accused was identified as Raja Singh, a resident of Jajal in Punjab. SC seeks report from Kerala on compensations to victims of dog bites

The Supreme Court today sought to know from the Kerala government on whether compensation has been paid to the people bitten by stray dogs in the state and warned the concerned authorities of contempt if they had not done so. The apex court asked the state government to place before it a compliance report following recommendations made by a committee appointed by the apex court to pay compensation. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said if compensation is not given within two weeks, contempt proceedings may be initiated against the authorities concerned. It was earlier alleged before the top court that the dog bite victims, despite being awarded the compensation by the panel, had not yet been paid by the state government. CBI chargesheets Farooq Abdullah in JKCA scam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday filed a chargesheet in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Srinagar, against former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah and other accused in the multi-crore J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) scam.The CBI in January had questioned Abdullah in connection to the scam.Between 2011 and 2012, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had given Rs 112 crore for promotion of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir. It has been alleged that there has been a misappropriation of Rs 46.3 crore by the accused.In 2015, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by two cricketers- Majid Yaqoob Dar and Nissar Ahmad Khan - into the alleged scam in the JKCA that had surfaced in 2012, following which the account of the JKCA remained frozen.The case was subsequently handed over to the CBI, to investigate the alleged embezzlement of funds in the cricket association which was headed by Abdullah.
