Woman 'gang-raped & burnt alive' by five in Sambhal

A woman was burnt alive after having been gang-raped allegedly by five persons in her house in Gunnaur area here, the police said today. The incident took place on Friday night when the 30-year-old victim was alone in her house with her daughter, the police said, adding the five persons barged into her house and allegedly raped her. The five later took her to a nearby hut and burnt her alive said Gunnaur Circle officer Aqil Ahmad, quoting from the complaint lodged by the victim's husband. He said an FIR has been registered in the case against five persons including Aram Singh, Mahaveer, Charan Singh, Gullu and Bhona. The body of the victim has been sent for autopsy and the police has launched manhunt to nab the accused, who are absconding. The victim's husband is a labourer and reside in Ghaziabad.

NGT plans to hear cases using video-conferencing

Crippled by the delay in appointment of experts and judicial members, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is planning to conduct hearings through video-conferencing to decide the environmental cases pending in its regional benches. The NGT's functioning has been hit by vacancies. The apex environment watchdog is functioning with less than one-third of its sanctioned strength of 20 officials besides the chairperson. Recently many cases from regional benches in Pune, Bhopal, Chennai and Kolkata have been transferred to the principal bench in Delhi due to non-availability of judicial and expert members. Due to this, petitioners had to travel to Delhi to attend hearings which turned out to be a financial and physical burden on them. A total of 3,236 cases were pending with the tribunal till April. While 1,484 cases were pending before the principal bench in Delhi, the pendency of cases stood at 579 at the regional bench in Chennai, 580 in Pune, 325 in Bhopal and 268 in Kolkata. Asked about .

Teacher molests students in his office, held

A teacher has been arrested on charge of molesting a girl student in his office on the premises of a private school in Ulhasnagar in Thane district, police said. The incident occurred yesterday when the girl, 12, was visiting the school to get a leaving certificate, a police official said quoting the complaint. The teacher, identified as Vijay Dhangar, allegedly called the girl to his office room and touched her inappropriately, he said. The girl raised and alarm and came out of the room running, following which people present at the school caught Dhangar and handed him over to police. A case has been registered under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Live bomb found in Rajkot village

A bomb has been found in Gujarat's Metoda village on Sunday.After receiving a call from the villagers who found the bomb, the police and the bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot.Information about who planted the bomb is yet to be ascertained.Police are investigating the matter. Further details are awaited.On a related note, an explosive device with a timer was found in Rajkot's Khodiyar Para area earlier this year in February. It was later defused by the bomb disposal squad later in the day.

Woman lawyer raped by senior advocate in South Delhi

A woman lawyer was allegedly raped by a senior advocate in his chamber in South Delhi's Saket court, police said today. The victim, in her statement to the police, said the accused, who was in an inebriated condition, sexually assaulted her in his chamber which was in the same complex where she worked, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya said. On the intervening night of July 14-15, the victim called up the police and alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the senior lawyer, the DCP said. Her statement has been recorded and a medical examination has also been conducted, he said. The chamber, where the alleged incident took place, has been sealed and the Forensic Science Laboratory and crime team has inspected it, Baaniya said. A case was registered and the accused, who is in his 50s, was arrested from South Delhi's Sangam Vihar and later produced before the Saket court, he said.

Sharif's daughter refuses prison comforts

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Pakistan's disgraced former premier Nawaz Sharif, who was imprisoned with her father, has rejected an offer for better facilities in jail. Sharif, 68, and Maryam, 44, were taken into custody in the Avenfield corruption case, shortly after their arrival at Lahore airport from London last night. Don't treat every case of missing girl as depicted in films: HC

Taking serious note of the police's failure to trace a minor girl who went missing from Thane district last year, the Bombay High Court said it was high time that the police machinery changed its mindset. In an order passed earlier on July 10, a bench of Justices S C Dharamadhikari and Bharati Dangre said the police authorities must stop assuming that every missing person's case, involving a minor girl, was about her having eloped with a lover, as depicted in films. "We are most unhappy with the state of affairs and the prevailing mindset of the police... Let not the investigating teams and officials placed at the highest level treat every case as one where the girl child runs away with the boy she loves, particularly as depicted in cinema or a film on the screen," the bench said. Gunfight between police, illegal sand miners in Rajasthan

An exchange of fire broke out between police and some people who were illegally transporting sand gravel in Rajasthan's Dholpur district today, but one one injured in the incident and the accused managed to flee, officials said. "A police team tried to stop the tractors at Kanchanpur but its occupants opened fire at the police. The police personnel had to retaliate in self-defence," the Dholpur SP Rajesh Singh said. He said no one injured in the firing, but the accused managed to escape and a hunt has been launched to nab them. The officer said the six tractors, which were being used to transport the gravel illegally mined from Chambal river, have been seized.

Delhi: Minor girl commits suicide inside police station

A minor girl allegedly committed suicide inside Tilak Vihar police station here on Saturday night by hanging herself.According to the deceased's mother, their neighbours abducted the girl in an effort to pressurize her into marrying their son."Our neighbour abducted her. They wanted their son to marry my daughter but I refused since she was minor. Police called me here. I saw her hanging in one room and my 3 sons locked in another room," the mother told ANI.The Deputy Commissioner of police (West) Vijay Kumar told ANI that at around 2 am on Saturday the girl came to the police station and said that she didn't want to go to her home."There was a dispute between the girl's family and their neighbours. Haryana Police nabs wanted criminal from Noida

A wanted criminal, carrying a reward of Rs 1.50 lakh on his head, was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana Police from Noida in Uttar Pradesh. A spokesperson of the police department said the arrested criminal has been identified as Pardeep Lohar alias Kala, a resident of Badala in Hisar. Lohar, absconding since 2017, was allegedly involved in several cases of crime including murder, dacoity and loot, he said, adding 24 cases were registered against the accused at various police stations in the state and in Delhi. Haryana Director General of Police B S Sandhu congratulated the STF chief and IG Saurabh Singh, DIG STF Sateesh Balan and their entire team for intensifying efforts to crackdown on wanted criminals in the state. Notorious criminal slapped with Public Safety Act in JK's Samba, sent to jail

A 33-year-old notorious criminal, arrested last week in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir after a long hunt, has been charged under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) and sent to jail, police said today. Mohammad Hussain, a resident of Manohar Gopala who was wanted in nearly a dozen cases, was arrested from Basanter area on July 10 and was sent to sub-jail Hiranagar in Kathua district yesterday, a police spokesman said. He said Hussain was the mastermind behind all organised crimes in Samba such as drug smuggling and cattle theft. A total of 11 cases, mostly related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, are registered against him in the district," the spokesman said. "Hussain was posing a serious threat to peace and tranquillity in the district," the spokesman said.

Bangladeshi woman gets 3-year RI for flesh trade, illegal stay

The Thane district court has convicted a 24-year-old Bangladeshi woman on charges of running a sex racket and illegal stay and sentenced her to rigorous imprisonment for three years. Assistant sessions court judge SA Sinha last week found Shimu alias Muskan Masud Gazi guilty under sections 4 and 5 of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act and section 14(A) of Foreigners Act 1946. The court also imposed the fine of 12,000 on Gazi. The judge also directed the authorities that Gazi, a native of Dhaka, be deported to Bangladesh after expiry of her jail term. Gazi was arrested on November 18, 2017 on a tip-off from Kopri in Thane district. Public Prosecutor Shilpa Talhar demanded maximum punishment for Gazi, saying the latter had entered India illegally and was engaged in flesh trade. 501 cases disposed off in Lok Adalat in Jamshedpur

Altogether 501 cases, including dispute related to banking sector, have been disposed off at the National Lok Adalat at the Civil Court premises here, an official release said. A sum of about Rs 2.84 crore was collected. It included Rs one crore from banking disputes related to Non-performing assets (NPA) at the Lok Adalat yesterday. Of the 501 cases, the release said, 237 criminal cases were also disposed off and a sum of Rs about 1.28 crore recovered as penalty. A bench comprising 12 members including judicial officers and non-judicial members was formed to resove the cases.

Delhi HC sentences man to life term for sodomy

The Delhi High Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for sodomising a three-and-a half-year-old boy, observing that the child was subjected to traumatic and brutal sexual assault. A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel dismissed the man's appeal and upheld a trial court's order convicting him for the offences of aggravated penetrative assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and kidnapping and wrongful confinement under the IPC. The bench noted that the child was "too young to depose" in the court and the failure to examine him was not fatal to the prosecution's case. "The victim was a young three-and-a-half-year-old child and was subjected to traumatic and brutal sexual assault by the convict. In the circumstances, the court does not find any reason whatsoever to interfere with the sentence awarded to the him for the offences," it said. The incident took place on February 11, 2014, when the child's father had come home to have lunch .

Couple killed after car falls into gorge in J-K's Doda district

A couple were killed while their son and two daughters were injured when their car skidded off a hilly road and fell into a deep gorge in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir this morning, the police said. They were going to Doda town from their Chillybala village. The incident occurred near Mukhyas village when the driver was negotiating a blind turn, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bhaderwah, Rajinder Singh said. The victims were rushed to a hospital, where Bodh Raj Manhas (61) and his wife Santosha Devi (55) succumbed to their injuries, the police officier said. Their son Deepak Singh and daughter, Verta and Poonam, were shifted to district hospital Doda for specialised treatment and their condition was stated to be serious, he said.

Man ends life after argument with wife

An 18-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Titawi village in this district, police said today. The man took the extreme step after having an argument with his wife. His wife was found near a petrol pump yesterday, they said. In another incident, the body of an unidentified man was found near the railway tracks near Mansurpur railway station in the district last evening, the police said, adding the body has been sent for post-mortem.
