ED files supplementary charge sheet against Guj IAS officer

The Enforcement Directorate today filed a supplementary charge sheet against suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma in a money laundering case. The charge sheet was filed before Special Judge A C Joshi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act "with respect to attachment of Rs 10 lakh", the ED said in a statement. The agency had filed its first charge sheet against Sharma on September 27, 2016. The ED had lodged a money laundering case against Sharma on the basis of FIRs registered by the Criminal Investigation Department, Rajkot. The CID had alleged that Sharma, when he was collector of Kutch district, abused his powers and allotted land to Welspun India at less-than-market rate and caused a loss to the government, the statement said. Sharma invested Rs 1 lakh in the name of his wife in 2008 in Value Packaging "with ulterior motive of channelising Rs 29 lakh in the guise of profit distribution by the said firm", it said. Man arrested for stealing replica of Olduvai Handaxe from National Museum

The police have arrested a 53-year-old man from Gurgaon for allegedly stealing a replica of the ancient Olduvai Handaxe from the National Museum here. Police said that Uday Ratra, who is currently unemployed, was arrested from his home late last night. The replica has been missing from the National Museum since June 24. Police said museum authorities initially tried to find the item on their own but unable to make any headway they approached them with a complaint yesterday. They also handed over CCTV footage from the premises to the police in which a person could be seen going out with the object. After studying the CCTV footage, the police managed to identify the accused and nabbed him from his house in Gurgaon and also recovered the replica, police said. Villagers lynch man who killed wife

A 48-year-old man today bludgeoned his wife to death with an iron rod following which angry villagers lynched him in Bihar's Rohtas district. The incident occurred at Vishrampur village Mufassil police station of the district, Mufassil police station SHO Jagniwas Singh said the deceased have been identified as Durgawati Devi (40) and her husband Gopal Nutt (48). Police are investigating the double murder and ascertaining what led to the fight between the couple. Gopal Nutt allegedly hit his wife on the head, inflicting fatal injuries to her. Durgawati Devi, who was brought to Sadar hospital by villagers, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. This angered the villagers who, in turn, beat up her husband and killed him on the spot, the SHO said. The post-mortem of both the bodies have been conducted, the SHO said and added that an unnamed FIR has been lodged with Mufassil police station in this regard.

AAP leader says accident victim's video reflects "insensitivity" of police

Three naxalites arrested in Bihar

Three naxalites including a self styled 'area commander' of the proscribed naxal outfit Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) were arrested today during a combing operation in Bihar's Rohtas and Kaimur district, police said. Superintendent of Police, Rohtas, Satyavur Singh said the security forces launched a combing operation in the Kaimur hills area on a tip-off that naxalites were present on the area. The arrested naxalites have been identified as Ramdular Kharwar, self-styled area commander of TPC, Nawal Kharwar and Dadan Kharwar, the SP said. The security forces arrested Dadan Kharwar from Khukhma in Kaimur district, the SP said adding that on information provided by Dadan, the team raided Salma village in Rohtas district and arrested Ramdular and Nawal. The security forces also seized a country made pistol and several live cartridges from the two, he said adding that all the three naxalites were wanted in cases relating to extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

Undertrial prisoner dies in Rajasthan

A 30-year-old undertrial prisoner, lodged in the Kota Central Jail, died during treatment at Maha Rao Bhim Singh (MBS) hospital after he was rushed there in the morning with complaints of breathing problem, an official said. The inmate, identified as Deepak Gujar alias Kalu, had been lodged in the jail since 11th of this month in an Excise Act case and was an alcohol addict, said Yogesh Kumar Teiji, the jailor of Kota Central Jail. Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased created ruckus in the hospital, alleging that Gujar was thrashed by jail personnel. However, Teiji refuted the allegations, saying that the inmate was an alcohol addict and was not in sound health since the time he was lodged in the jail. Police have lodged a case under Section 176 of the CrPC, the official said.

MoC sister confessed to selling three children : J'khand Police

Sister Konsalia, a nun of Nirmal Hriday, a shelter home here run by the Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity, today "confessed" to selling three children for money and giving away the fourth child, a senior police officer claimed. Senior Superintendent of Police (Ranchi) Anis Gupta said that Sister Konsalia, during interrogation, "confessed" that she had sold the three children to three people. He, however, did not say how much money was taken for the alleged sale. The SSP said the children who had been sold were rescued by the police and a search was on the fourth child who was given away. Student, who had consumed poison after failing exams, dies

A 21-year-old student, who had allegedly consumed poison after reportedly failing in her college exams, today died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in suburban Kurla here, police said. Puja Sangle, the daughter of a constable attached to Nehrunagar police station, was depressed for the past few days after she failed her second year Bachelor of Architecture exams, a senior police official said. The official said the deceased had also applied for admission to a new stream at a different college. Three days ago, she consumed poison and fell unconscious near Kurla station following which she was rushed to a nearby hospital, an official said. "She died today while undergoing treatment. Cong says SC put 'stamp' on its reservations over social media hub issue

Man arrested for selling farmer's land using forged documents

A man has been arrested in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district for allegedly forging the documents of a plot of land belonging to a local farmer and selling it to another person, police said today. Arif Ali Abid Ali (35) was arrested yesterday after farmer Prashant Mankar Wankhede complained that his plot of land had been sold to another person identified only as Yadav, a senior police official said. "Wankhede, a resident of Babhulgaon tehsil here, owned a 2,118 square feet plot of land in Narangi Nagar. He wanted to construct a house on the plot and applied to the local municipal council for permission," an official said. A man has been arrested and three others, including a couple, have been booked in connection with the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman in Bhiwandi in the district, police said today. The arrested accused, Satish Nikalwar, had allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim between August 2015 and June 2018, police said. Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said Nikalwar was arrested today by Shanti Nagar police in Bhiwandi. "Nikalwar raped the victim repeatedly for nearly three years on the false promise of marriage. The man forced her to terminate her pregnancy three times. Row over caste panchayat leads to clash, 14 arrested

An altercation over a caste panchayat (meeting) called to decide a marital dispute led to a clash between two groups in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, police said today. While some twenty people were injured in the incident that took place at Srigonda town three days ago, fourteen persons have been arrested so far, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sudarshan Munde. MP scribe death case: Autopsy reveals broken bones, suicide angle being probed

Fresh investigation has been initiated into the death of Dainik Bhaskar group editor Kalpesh Yagnik after the post-mortem report revealed several broken bones and the suicide angle is being looked into, a senior police official said today. Deputy Inspector General of Police Harinarayanachari Mishra said the initial surmise was that 55-year-old Yagnik may have died of a heart attack. An inquiry has been initiated into the journalist's death from the angle of suicide, he told PTI. Mishra said that the police have, however, not found any suicide note. "The post-mortem report shows many broken bones," he said. Seven persons were arrested for allegedly promoting superstitions at Jamune village in Palamau district today, police said. A police team conducted raid in the village and arrested seven persons for allegedly promoting superstitions after a man named Manrup Bhuiyan, who was declared mentally unsound by the accused, registered a case in this regard yesterday, Superintendent of Police, Indrajeet Mahatha said.
